It seems your option number 2. was correct.....
With that in mind it appears that with it at full price they might make an extra "1 Million Dollars!"

Last year, #7965 wasn't on the list of initial discounts but was 10% off later in the day. Perhaps that will happen again this year? Not that it's a great deal, but Amazon hasn't had it for more than a few percent off since last year.

To be fair the sale offers as a promotion this year are quite poor, but then again TLG don't have to offer any sales at all so something is better than nothing isn't it? and as for one region getting something the other isn't again my guess and observation as a long time Lego purchaser is what goes around comes around, the EU gets some sets earlier, we get AFOL shopping days, look at all the Polybags the UK got via Sun promotions that the US didn't. At the end of the day TLG will push and promote by region as it sees fit and as a customer you win some and you lose some (the recent Bilbo BluRay being an EU loss for example)
As for the B-Wing it is a fringe ship at best in the movie cannon, the model looks nice but simply put it isn't an X-Wing... my guess is come the end of the year this will be heavily discounted as TLG gets rid of their stock to make way for the next UCM, who knows

There's more to the US/Europe thing than just taxes. I'm not going to get into it here...again. There has to be a more logical reason for the different pricing than just "Lego hates Europe". Has someone from TLG ever given a reason for this?

I think this whole EU vs US prices discussion is quite misplaced here. It's not about the price this time but the offered discount. All those points people bring up are among the reasons why Lego is cheaper in the US, true. But I'd imagine that TLG aims for a similar profit rate in both markets so by offering a discount they probably forego a roughly similar ratio of their profit.

If anything, their comments from a few years ago (which claimed that one of the reasons of the cheaper US prices is the much more intensive price competition and that they make up for it by selling in bigger volume) might indicate that their profit rate is lower in the US. (Or not - I was just speculating.)

Anyhow I'm quite sure that in a few months there will be a clearance sale on the B-wing on the EU [email protected] as well. Unless they expected a much smaller relative demand for it in Europe and they don't have that much stock here or unless it is for some weird reason selling a lot better in the EU than in the US. After this US sale I think they'll have an even harder time to sell off their European stock at full RRP. Quite a few European AFOLs might buy it through friends in the US now and even those who don't now know full well that it is a poor seller and will most likely wait for the inevitable discount. Sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy. If everyone waits for a discount, they'll have to discount it.

Though I'm not really fussed about the B-wing. If it gets to 50% off sometime then I'll buy it, otherwise I'll just let it pass. After it was 100 USD in the US I sure as hell won't pay anything close to 300 USD on it.
I understand that but does anyone here know the reason behind why Amazon and TRU don't stock any of the exclusives here in the UK? or any other big toy suppliers?

Its always been a question that ive never seen answered :(

^TLG wants some ("exclusive") items to appear collectible and hard to find. But not SO hard to find that some people resort to actually collecting them.

The problem with that logic is that they ARE for sale from Amazon everywhere else in the world. The question is, why is the UK special?

^ I think that even the Amazon affiliates have hit a brick wall trying to get an answer to that question.

I called the Troy, Mi store and the associate told me they aren't told what the sale items are until the morning. I wasn't going to bother asking for a manager. I asked if I could have 1 B-Wing held for me through tomorrow and the lady chuckled and said, "we have at least a hundred of them stacked up, but sure!"

Because the Amazon reps they're asking don't know the answer. It comes from way way up I'd imagine.

I am excited for the deal on the B-Wing but the exclusive Han figure is a little weak. I will be there bright and early at my local LEGO store and pick one up when they open. A big thank you for the Bothan spies who brought us this information.

If the US market is volume driven (which it is), the pricepoints will be reduced as a rule, and the inventory will be bloated. What happens with a stinker in a volume market?

It doesnt perform the numbers, and blocks inventory. A decision ( by ANY business) has to be made to recoup longterm losses, as well as immediate stockroom space.

When do you mark down this stinker? During your best chance to move the product....a promotion in it's theme.

Is it fair to the rest of your consumer base? It is fair from a business standpoint. It's also fair from a standpoint of continuing to broaden your lines, learning from this mistake, and benefitting future releases to your whole market.

50% discount/loss isnt a win for US consumers, it's damage control for overstocked backrooms...and Lego US market budget drives.

IMO though the price it becomes at 50% off shouldve been the original rrp to start with ;-)

I wonder if they're going to retire the B-wing with this discount. It would make sense to get rid of inventory that they can't sell and clear the shelves for ones that do...
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
^ Various sources have already reported that production has ended and the product will retire once stock is gone.

If that is really true or not, we're all just guessing, but I do believe it.

UCS X-Wing is probably replacing UCS B-Wing

Well if Lego would of priced this set more in line with its PpP ($150-180) and thrown in a minifig or two they probably wouldn't have had to do this kind of firesale. It's definitely a win for someone like myself who only buys big sets when they are discounted heavily. If this sale goes through I will be happy to have a $99 B-Wing sitting next to my $125 Imperial Shuttle.
  • jasorjasor Member Posts: 839
^^shortterm consumer win. I'd rather keep Lego successful with a moderate/low pricepoint for all that US volume vs. pricing increases over multiple lines due to bad decisions.
  • CroozCrooz Member Posts: 18
I agree with this completely that this may be the straw that breaks this set's back pending enough inventory is moved.
  • paulmisonpaulmison Member Posts: 39
Does anyone have a cache of the Toys n Bricks article / image, or memory of what (other than the previously rumoured 50% off the B-wing) the discounts are? They appear to have pulled both from their site.
  • BanditBandit Member Posts: 889
Don't remember what they were individually, but IIRC it was a few more SW sets at 10% off, and some keychains for 20% off. Nothing you couldn't likely get cheaper already at Amazon other than the b-wing...

I am trying to decide if I want to get the B-wing at 50% off tonight or not (I am assuming this will be available online as well as in store). I don't care for it for my personal collection but at that price it should be a no brainer to sell MISB in a year and double the investment I would think.
  • monkeyhangermonkeyhanger Member Posts: 3,169
Well I cashed in my VIP points to get the Rancor pit for a net £14.99 and the order has the promotional fig and poster on so i'm hoping TLG don't remove them.
  • monkeyhangermonkeyhanger Member Posts: 3,169
Still hoping Lego do 50% worldwide on B-Wing but perhaps the discounts won't kick in until the US sale hits the web.
  • pillpodpillpod Member Posts: 273
With the B-Wing being marked down so much because of lack luster sales, combined with people buying a ton of them at said markdown, what do you guys see for this set in a year or two as far as resale value?

If the set isn't extremely popular now, would people be willing to pay top dollar for it after it retires?
  • cloaked7cloaked7 Member Posts: 1,448
^ I think you may be able to get some answer to that by checking #10215. A set with a similar history - high RRP, lackluster sales, often offered at a discount. Just now it sells for the original RRP. So, maybe the B-Wing will sell go for the RRP in a couple of years? It don't see it increasing a lot quickly, like the Emerald Night and Imperial Flagship did. Personally, I'm not going to get a B-Wing for resell. I think there are better performers.

I think the B-Wing will do ok long term. It's a big model. Big models tend to be more impressive and more satisfying to own. The Jedi Starfighter is a good looking model but small. I now wish I would of picked up one when it was selling for below RRP.
  • RennyRenny Member Posts: 1,145
There is a bit of a difference though isn't there? I mean #10215 was on Lego's Sales page at 50% for awhile if I remember right. The B-Wing will only be 50% for a 2 day sale. That is assuming of course that it won't eventually hit clearance at 50% off again when it's time to hit the skids ;)
  • shikadishikadi Member Posts: 140
I've been holding out on R2 but really want him...
Does anyone think the set will go down more or should I go for it in a few hours?

I think this is going to be entirely contingent on how long the B-Wing lingers. If this is all it takes to clear out their stock (and it doesn't see a restock), it should be fairly easy to double your money. I think much past that could be a slower climb, though, and I know a lot of people aren't satisfied with just doubling their money, so it may not be that great an investment set beyond that.

Still... if this DOES clear it out... even if it's considered to be not that great a set, the seven month lifespan could have quite an impact. Personally, I'm going to try to get one extra, which I don't think I should have any trouble selling for ~$230 once it's officially EOL.
  • PicopiratePicopirate Member Posts: 325
@shikadi. I would wait on R2. Worst case you should be able to pick it up for at least 10% off on brick Friday. Meanwhile you might come across a better deal elsewhere. For example, back in December TRU ran a $25 off $100 sale and left R2 at RRP. The sale stacked with a TRU MasterCard promotion and a few people here got R2 for $115. Just keep watching the forums and if nothing pops up then get it brick Friday.
  • shikadishikadi Member Posts: 140
^ Thanks for the advice! I will wait and watch for a future sale.

Yeah, I snagged an R2-D2 for $122 with tax with that sale. I doubt I'll ever find him cheaper than that, but if I do, I'll back the truck up :)
