Suggestions for SW sets for 8-9 year old and for adult

CoolsplashCoolsplash Member Posts: 935
I think it is about time I start buying some Star Wars sets for myself as the last quarter of 2012 and early 2013 wave is pretty good in my eyes. So how about some suggestions you guys :) For now, my wishlist is as follows:

#9500-1: Sith Fury-class Interceptor
#9496-1: Desert Skiff
#9495-1: Gold Leader's Y-wing Starfighter
#9493-1: X-wing Starfighter
#7879-1: Hoth Echo Base
#7965-1: Millennium Falcon
#75014-1: Battle of Hoth

Do let me know your suggestions fellow Bricksetters and if someone has any from this list to spare do drop me a PM :)

They are all decent sets depending on what you are after out of them. If you are not going to be buying all of them and need to make a personal choice then the obvious answer is to read reviews of the sets and go from there. There are plenty on brickset and youtube if you like video reviews.

#7965 is a favourite of mine, and given how long it has been out (2011), maybe now is the best time to get it.

What about #9492 Tie Fighter. Otherwise, what is going to shoot at your X-wing?

@Coolsplash I've just ordered #9493 x-wing and 9496 skiff from Smyths toys for £45.18 with free delivery. Use code Easter20 for 20% of the online prices. Code runs out tomorrow. Also have many of the others on your list at reduced prices, check it out.

Avoid 7879 because it's an expensive mess of a set though if bought with 75014 that might help a bit. I think any of the others would make superb choices.

If I had to pick one, it'd be the X-wing. It, the TIE fighter and the MF are arguably the most iconic ships when it comes to Star Wars. The reason I say the X-wing is because it's a) the good guys (as opposed to the TIE) and b) it's cheaper, more displayable and more swooshable than the MF.

That said, @LeonC is right, if you can get two, get the X-wing and the TIE. If you can get three, add on the MF.

... and the X-Wing is currently in stock at ASDA for less than £30.

I think for a small set #9496, Desert Skiff is hard to beat. For larger sets, I would agree with the X-Wing, TIE Fighter and the Millennium Falcon, although I am a huge fan of set #9516, Jabba's Palace. The price may be fairly outrageous (but understandable given all the new moulds required for the set) but the actual model is delightful and the Minifigures are sublime.

I really like #75003 A wing. Great little sets and it's an inexpensive way to get Han Solo and Ackbar.

Agreed! Fun build. Neat bits. Great figs.

I like Gold Leader's Y-Wing. It's a bit fragile for "play" but my two year old loves dropping the bombs and playing with the cockpit.

I have to say my son is having a blast with Rancor Pit and Jabba's Palace. You will want to find it at a discount. I ended up with both for about $130, and that seemed a far more reasonable price for the two. It has a ton of good play value.

My vote is for 7965: you get 6 main characters of SW in one set, 1200+ pieces for longer build, playability, plus it may not be available for RRP for much longer.

@CCC, #7965 is also my favourite so I am looking to get my hands on this one

@LeonC, I agree with you about the Vs battle between #9492 and #9493 so I am going to buy these two yes, and I like the current offers on #9493 in UK stores...help me out with this guys....

@CapnRex101, I think I have one set remaining of #9496 so will open it up when we have the other SW sets I am looking to buy :) and I do agree about #9516 but its overpriced in my eyes and with the current controversy behind it, its going to go sky high especially in my region :P

I recently got the #75003 and #75002 set along with the new Battle packs so those we will build oh yes!

So what about #9500 and #9495? No suggestions on there?

Anyone like to help me get anything from my current wishlist :) do PM me....

#9500 is a lovely set in my opinion, but it is far from an iconic vehicle which limits the appeal. #9495 is also a rather good set, but the price is quite high and the Minifigures are sorely lacking in appeal to me at least.
  • CoolsplashCoolsplash Member Posts: 935
@pvancil27, are you willing to sell the #9500?
