i have started with the PC set which has just been release and now looking at buying the whole lot. I am finding the 3 discontinued ones to be far too expensive and was wondering if anyone knows of anywhere to sell them at a reasonable price, if not i will have to skip them 3 and just carry on with what LEGO are still selling

I am in the same boat bought the PC and loved it. Looked at the prices for the first three and decided to skip them. Still make a very nice street with the 5 still being sold.

Not that it will help that much, but Market Street isn't really considered to be a part of the series (even though it does connect in the same fashion as the others). I do know some people consider it to be part of the layout, but it's pretty hideous and easy to skip, in my opinion. It was still relatively affordable when I got into the modulars (with the release of Fire Brigade), but I still had no problems skipping it.

And honestly, had I not gotten Café Corner at retail, I'd have had no problem passing on that one, either. Green Grocer may be worth hunting down for a reasonable price, though. I'm not in love with that one, but I know a lot of people name it as their favorite, so maybe it's worth shelling our for.

Alternatively, work out replacement bricks/colours that are easily available and build MOCs in the style of CC, GG and MS.

You beat me to it. I sold my Market Street about a year and a half ago. I personally don't consider it a true Modular Building. It was built using LDD and whatever was available in the color pallete at the time. I think it is hideous, but that's just me. There are currently 2 corner buildings out, so unless you are trying to put together a square of modular buildings ( who has the room) I would pass on CC and at least go after the Green Grocer.

Do you think Lego will surprise us and EOL Grand Emporium first?

    Agreed

CC: Too expensive, that ship has sailed for most
MS: Ug-lee, totally not worth what people are asking. I consider myself a certified completionist and even I didn't bother getting this one.
GG: IMHO the best so far. So many details inside and out and not out of $ reach (yet) so don't wait!

I have to disagree, Market Street is considered by Lego to be a modular. If you look at all the catalogs and instruction manuals back in 2007-08 they clearly market the 3 modulars (MS, CC, GG) together. It is branded under Lego Factory because it was designed by a Lego fan working closely with Lego designers. There is no official Modular theme printed on the packaging for the other modular sets and the latest modular Palace Cinema is now branded as a Creator Expert set. Market St had the lowest retail price of $89 and the piece count reflects that. That being said Market St is clearly the weakest model and you shouldnt spend 4x or 5x the price for something that you don't like as others have mentioned. Market St is a decent model, but it is overshadowed by the high bar that the other modulars have set.

Other have also mentioned that Haunted House should be included in the Modulars, but I don't think it qualifies in terms of design, layout, and lack of connectivity with other sets. It is however a wonderful set you should also consider if you like Modulars.

I'm not talking branding or LEGO's consideration, of course. I'm disregarding Market Street as part of the series by way of general consensus which is an opinion that stems less from the fact that Market Street is actually comprised of modules, and more from the fact that it's absolutely hideous and doesn't fit with the rest of the models.

I think Café Corner lined up with the other modulars is particularly jarring in how out of place it looks due to outdated parts and build techniques and relatively sloppy design... and I'd probably amplify that tenfold to describe what Market Street looks like.

On the point of the Haunted House, we agree. I think a lot of fans tend to label any really detailed building as a modular, even when it's inaccurate.

I guess having Bricklinked Market St years ago has blinded me of the quality of the set. Personally I love having Cafe Corner and Market St together with the rest of the modular scene, but if you take away them it makes the remaining modulars much more "realistic". The color pallette changes to a more muted and earthly tone and I get that. With the original building the mood lightens and is more whimsy which I like in Lego in general.

I'm currently starting the process of bricklinking GG, and have bought (almost) all of the expensive pieces. Not sure whether I'll do the same for CC and MS though...
