Queen Amidala Minifig and new TIE Fighter Set?

Dunno the story on this yet (assuming it will be on fbtb later). Just saw it on Bricklink. Must be a LEGO chat/session at ComicCon? Perhaps just talking about how they design things - or perhaps new product announcements??

That would be so cool, if they finally gave us Amidala. Never quite understood why she never appeared in minifigure form before.

Thx for the link sidersdd. Some cool lookin' new figs and a tie-fighter too!

Looking at the droid and Death Star trooper... I'm dreading they've decided to do a refitted improved Death Star JUST as i finally lost my cool and ordered it from Lego [email protected] (i'd hoped to get a bonus points month, or special offer on it, but all this talk of termination made me crack in case i missed out).

Not sure what i'd feel about a super-dooper version.

But amidala, Looooong overdue and about time.

Yes, Lego has FINALLY gone back to the original TIE Fighter and done it RIGHT! Finally, they have discarded that clunky cockpit piece from 1999 in favor of a more realistic bubble canopy with laser tips separate from the part. Not to mention to gray/black colorscheme!

The article gives a short summary of what happened at the Lego Panel today.

It also seems Lego is expanding regular sets to the 9000s. Perhaps they should be added to the database?

You got my hopes up about having more time to get a Death Star, but apparently those minifigs will come with the new TIE Fighter. Maybe they could be working on a new DS, but I wouldn't count on it.
I like the new droid top (head?). It will be nice to get a droid that really looks different from R2D2 other than just having different colors. Too bad that and the Death Star trooper will come with the new TIE Fighter that I don't need. I have 3 of the original and don't care about upgrading to the new version.

It's about time they made a Queen Amidala minifig. I can't believe it took this long when she was featured in the original logo for the first prequel sets in 1999. I wonder what else will be in the set that includes her.

Hopefully they'll do the Lars farm or something and use that new droid head to give us a decent R5-D4 and that Amidala will appear with her royal starship.

@sidersdd Limited-edition LEGO Star Wars Advent Calander? Does that mean it is being sold early and is limited-edition or that it is a special version only being sold at Comic Con?

^ Special numbered version that included a poster or something like that. Plus it's a novelty to get one now, months before they go on sale elsewhere.
  • NeilJamNeilJam Member Posts: 272
It also has special packaging to look like it was mailed from Santa.
  • prof1515prof1515 Member Posts: 1,550
And it costs $50, the extra cash being justified by the "limited" label and the Barnum-like differences between what they're offering now and what will go on sale later.

@prof1515 and @NeilJam So, the one year I could've gone but decided not to, they have all the cool stuff? Last couple of years were somewhat disappointing with exclusives and all (Cubedude's were kinda cool though). Guess they made up for it this year.

    @Neiljam

Ah yes, i've just read that press release link, where it says the imperial figs come with the new Tie Fighter - major relief!

Of course, all those figs does mean the Fighter is likely to be near enough £80, due to the insert-a-fig-inflato-price matrix they use (Eugh!). Which is a killer for me, as I only own the Vader's Interceptor version, and have been really wanting a standard Tie design to be his wing-man... though with the scale change, the Tie is likely to dwarf vader's ship too (booh).

    ---

Similar note - what's with the Pilot's big smiley face? Reminds me of the family guy 'Thai' fighter pilot joke, but I'm sure it's just the blurry image doing it.

The only thing that bugs me about the figs (and perhaps some recent sets) - (great as they are!) - is i'm really feeling that Lego is starting to lose the LEGO aspect of the models and figs, I much prefer the figs that TT Games produced for their Video games versions - much more Star Wars as seen through the transformative lens of Lego, than Lego being transformed to suit something else.

(If that makes sense... it's similar to the issue of large moulded shapes being cheaper/efficient than small modular bricks to achieve an effect, part of the fun of making something out of lego is the difficulty of the challenge (often being the whole point) - not just mould something new and simply stamp LEGO copyright on it).

My mind boggles these days, of the many millions of ways i can achieve the same connection or shape... which often paralyses my designs in a way that lego never used to.

    (sorry slightly off topic)

    @legomatt

I understand what you mean about losing the LEGO aspect. I still want my LEGO SW stuff to look LEGOish, which is why I'm not eager to get this new TIE Fighter except that I want the minifigs. This is also why I am not so thrilled about the new Boba Fett minifig included with the latest version of Slave 1. I like the pauldron and separate rocket pack, but the head isn't LEGOish enough. It looks like it belongs on a regular action figure instead of a minifig, but maybe it's just that I'm accustomed to look of the original helmet. Of course I still want the Bossk minifig that comes with that set.

The only ComicCon exclusive I found even remotely interesting was the 2008 Indiana Jones one because it had at least something that wasn't available from any other source (and even that which was more available was still the Brickmaster set and not an off-the-shelf one).

I think that this year's exclusive is horrible. The calendar will be available later this year and the "special packaging" and poster aren't really important to me. Maybe they are for some collectors as well as kids who choose their cereal based on the color of the box, but not for me.
  • legoDadlegoDad Member Posts: 529
^Totally agree Prof. I was at SDCC in '08 and got the Indy set. The packaging was nice and at least we got a 'new' scene/trap for the Brickmaster Indy Jeep.
Looks like this year's exclusives will all be available in due time (maybe the Green Lantern fig is exclusive with the movie version suit while the release will have the comic book costume?)...not sure...

Nice score; wish I'd made it to ComicCon in 2008 to get one. I'm still debating buying one off Bricklink or eBay (most likely the former) but the $300 pricetag always deters me when I see all the other sets I could get for the same amount of cash. Same goes even more so for the Han Solo/Indiana Jones Transformation and its $1000 price tag.
  • legoDadlegoDad Member Posts: 529
@prof1515...check out eBay now for that set. I see like 2 or 3 for around $50 bucks BUT there's still time on the bidding though.
  • xowainxxowainx Member Posts: 112
I know we often moan about lazy "re-designs", so it feels a bit off to compain when we get a full on reimagining of an iconic ship, but i've got to say i'm not really into that TIE Fighter. Style wise it doesn't go with any of the previous TIEs and will look out of place next to them.. It feels more like a mini-UCS than a traditional system scale ship and i'm not sure that I like that, although i'm sure others will be. The figs are cool, it's nice to get a proper R5 "head", but I think the DS Trooper helmet is a little complex. Amidala is nice, but again, the dress is a little too customised for me, rather than being recognisably lego.

I personally like it and think it goes well with Vader's TIE from a couple years ago. Plus, in the grand tradition of not just giving us a TIE Fighter and pilot alone, they've given us other figures which are nice (original TIE came with a stormtrooper and the rerelease of it had Vader with the light-up lightsaber).

Hopefully Amidala comes with her royal starship and a full compliment of figures from those scenes. Chrome is improbable and even pearl silver is unlikely but it'd still be nice to finally have that ship.

And so, they won't be putting Amidala in a visual dictionary anymore. I just hope the set is quite "affordable".

  • macmonmacmon Member Posts: 80
Based on the previous and present visual dictionary. It is Luke and Han in Celebration uniform. So the next plausible minfig for the 3rd installment would be Leia in Celebration dress.
  • prof1515prof1515 Member Posts: 1,550
Ah, I thought he meant inclusion in the dictionary, not the figure embedded into the cover.

Just got around to checking this new TIE out, now this is more like it, these are the sort of SW sets I want to see more of in 2012. Have any of the other sets that are alluded to been announced?
  • OrthobotrexOrthobotrex Member Posts: 165
^^ Yeah, prof! I believe it was the thread about the new visual dictionary for SW where an exclusive Amidala fig was discussed, and I was saying that the skirt would make the cover page too big, and you said that TLG would get around that problem. Although, basing on the border colors where the fig was placed, I was wondering if they were gonna place someone in red.

And people paying way too much for something that will be out in a few months, IMO... I mean yeah it is neat but I am not paying that kind of amount for a SW advent calendar (but I am biased since I will not be buying a SW calendar to begin with). Besides there is not enough in the calendar to warrant paying such an amount . Someone said $50 bucks at the con, I will laugh my butt off if that is the retail price they are going to charge, partly cause I called that back when this was announced and partly because it does not surprise me with the price gouging going on for Lego SW. The sad thing is they will sell out, and Lego will continue to make subpar (IMO) calendars for the foreseeable future. The Castle one was the best calendar this past year and even that was not as good as all the calendars from two years ago.

As for Queen Amidala, the fig is long over due, among many others that could be redone.. like a better Watto's junkyard, a new Cantina, or R2's encounter with the Jawas or SOMETHING. How about another Jabba's... something? I mean he is only going for about 30 bucks resale.. how about another sale barge, or at least another palace setup.. OR make a massive Rancor with a set that also includes Jabba.. I am sure people would pay a fortune for something like that. No, lets make ANOTHER star Destroyer.. but the Executor, cause, yknow the last one sold oh so well.....
It seems Lego is not happy unless they can make a set they already have parts for (Anakan's pod racer... really???)

Whew... sorry for the rant.. by my point is Lego should have many more ideas for SW Lego besides another huge set that not many will want to pay for (unless on sale).. Also how long they still have the license though is anyone's guess...
  • oldtodd33oldtodd33 Member Posts: 2,694
I'm not sure that Lego was charging $50 for the set. The show is SDCC afterall. Did SDCC buy the sets from Lego and then jack the price to $50 to make a profit? I'm not sure how that all works. I also think in this economy that most parents would pass on a calendar that was priced at $50. I know I won't buy if it exceeds last years price.
  • NeilJamNeilJam Member Posts: 272

Yes, LEGO decides how much to charge for the set at SDCC. Exclusives are sold at the vendor's booth, so if an attendee wants a LEGO item and a Hasbro item there they have to go to both of those booths and buy them in separate transactions.
Whatever the retail price will be, I will pass as I don't collect the mini ship models and the minifigs won't justify the cost for me.
  • atkinsaratkinsar Member Posts: 4,258
The standard SW calendar would appear to be retailing at the 'standard' calendar price last year, e.g. £24.99, that's according to the pre-order prices anyway. So it appears they haven't added SWAT (Star Wars Added Tax) to it, in the UK at least, not sure about the US.

Actually I do recall reading something about there being a $20 premium on the SW calendar sold at SDCC, which suggests the US retail price for the standard calendar is $29.99.

Like I said, the SDCC stuff really only appeals to those that Barnum mentioned (See also: Sucker)

Well, to a degree Lego is listening to the fans. Sadly, they often listen to the children and the adult-children (ie, immature "adults" with the reasoning skills of young children) who have long been begging for a Executor. These individuals have little concept of price ratios and dimensional capabilities of the sets they desire. Witness the idiot who wanted a "mini-figure scale star destroyer" which they reasoned would only be 10 feet long, the "we want a hangar bay set" (ie, a big open space) or the people constantly clamoring for rereleases of sets that were discontinued only a year or so ago. Thankfully Lego doesn't listen to most of these people or we'd see the same 10 sets every year until the end of time.

I do hope LEGO listens to price points and NOT glue their minifigs on the magnets. :)

Loving the tie fighter and figs a definate purchase for me. Great to see an OT set done well and with great figs too, unlike recent sets hoth echo base, millenium falcon anyone. @prof1515 I'm with you on anything Jabba related, I too would like a rancor but how on earth would they do it justice even 50% scale would be a struggle for them one would imagine. You say about hangers in sets being unrealistic and I do agree but how realistic is a rancor?
  • prof1515prof1515 Member Posts: 1,550
A rancor could be achieved just like the dewback, Boga (was that the name of the annoying lizard in Episode III?), elephant or the old dinosaurs (the 2002 versions, ie. these http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6720-1, not those ugly later ones). If I recall from the old Kenner line, the rancor was 9" (23 cm) tall to the 3" (7.5 cm) height of the action figures. That would put a Lego rancor at about 4.5" (11.5 cm) tall. That's not too difficult (the wampa is about 3" or 7.5 cm tall).
  • bellybutton290bellybutton290 Member Posts: 453
^could work I am only recently out of the dark ages so hadn't seen the old dinosaurs or thr old dew back. I still have the kenner rancor actually in the loft and I remember it well a similar scale between the average minifigure and the size you suggest would be fine. Fingers crossed for anything jabba in 2012! Rumours suggest a ucs b-wing next year aswell which would be amazing as that is my personal favourite OT craft.
