Advent calendars 2013

I couldn't see a 2013 advent discussion, but feel free to merge if there is one.

I notice the new CMF style Santa is going to make another appearance - this time in the advent calendar. Otherwise, doesn't seem to be very much new. Nice dalmatian - presumably the one from fire station. I like the little train, simple, done before, but still nice. Particularly the ice cream steam.

Friends ... a few new minidoll prints. Sledge looks like the ones from this year. Looks very boring to me, even compared to last year's.

SW ... everyone already knows about the Jango Fett in Santa suit. You can just about see him.

Way excited about the Star Wars Advent Calendar. Hopefully my wife will surprise me with it when Christmas 2013 comes.

It's too bad that Jango Fett's helmet couldn't have matched his torso. That's a let down but other than that the other minifigs look great. I'm way excited to get a kid Boba, a better looking scout trooper with back printing, and a Jango Fett's mini Slave I. This will be the year of Jango Fett that's for sure!

^ Yes, a red helmet would have been better.

I hope they improve the Friends calendar compared to last year's. I know my daughter would have liked to have gotten more than just two minidolls. Also there were some downright stinkers - such as the days when she just got a bag of hair accessories, or a purse, or a dog.

I'm looking at the market stall with milk and thinking - 3 days?

The snowman minifig is also better than there has been in the past, with proper minifig torso. I assume it is brick bottom. If so, exactly the same as one I made last year for our display. It would be nice to get a face print for a snowman on a minifig head. It looks like he will attach the carrot himself.

I like the City calendar and may get it for my son. I'd prefer the police minifigure to be more generic rather than SWAT-style, and the astronaut seems a bit out of place, but otherwise the minifigure assortment is good. The RC excavator is great, as is the train.

Only got the SW one last year, probably will do the same again as it looks another really good selection.

Think it would've been nice to have a red helmet on santa Jango though.

I won't comment on the Friends calendar since I haven't really looked it over and thus couldn't provide any reasonable assessment.

As for the Star Wars calendar, it looks even less interesting than this year's. A few of the models look nice and some of the figures are welcome but on the whole it reminds me very much of the disappointing 2012 version and even the 2011 on. That's probably because yet again we get a clone trooper, Republic capial ship, Republic gunship, Separatist shuttle and Slave-I (none of which are interesting enough to warrant reappearing). The biker scout with printed legs looks too busy and just not as good as the normal ones but its inclusion along with the rebel soldier, astromech droid and Geonosian are still welcome additions. Even though I despised the character, the inclusion of a baby Boba Fett is good since the previous version was the old yellow-face. However, the less said about the "Santa" figure the better.

By contrast, the City calendar looks very good and I'm pleased they're using the Collectible MiniFigure Santa Claus. Even better is the inclusion of the dalmation since the only other set it's in is the latest in that long line of ugly fire stations that Lego inflicts on us every year or so. As always, the toys and furniture accessories are perfect for detailing houses, shops, etc. in models like the modular line. The only disappointment is to again see the police and firemen figures. Really, I wish Lego would lay those two themes to rest until the end of the decade (or longer).

The snowman with the carrot as a club looks more intimidating than the policeman. Perhaps it should be guarding the presents instead ;)
The picture of astronaut holding a magic wand made me smile

I will go with Star Wars again even with a heavy episode II bias. Although this year I plan on the City calendar for my daughter as she didn't enjoy the Friends offering last Christmas.

Agree with Jangos helmet clashing with the Santa costume. Bobas helmet would of looked nicer or the emperor with a red hood and cape but TLG are pushing Ep2 so was to be expected.

I think the city calendar looks better than the previous couple years, especially the Christmas dinner vignette, toy train and snowman. However, I really wish TLG would allow a holiday season to go by in Lego City without it getting robbed or catching fire.

I also really hope there is more to the friends calendar than shown on the box because that looks really pitiful.

I'm feeling the same. I'd like them to include some generic people / public. Maybe a guy in a Xmas jumper and a woman in a party dress. Something more than just cops and firemen.

I was surprised to see the Santa CMF. It was that which prompted me to post actually. I had already seen that the old style Santa with his pirate style bandana was appearing in the seasonal set, http://brickset.com/detail/?Set=40059-1, so I assumed CMF Santa was not going to make another appearance. But he appears to be exactly the same as the CMF.

There has to be. Otherwise I see it on sale at $10.

From a marketing perspective, it makes sense. A fireman needs a fire truck, a burglar needs a jail, and the little vignettes need a house.

Even so, I agree more citizens would be nice. In fact, the entire City line could do with more of them.

People need houses and cars and trains and parks and ...

I know it is not hard to moc your own people - I have hundreds made like this - it would just be nice to lay off the cops and firemen at christmas. A Christmas themed character (like the last Friends advent calendar) would be great.

Agreed. Christmas is supposed to be about gifts and parties and food and commercialism!

The city one look way nicer than last years... But I miss the PIRATE and CASTLE calendar...

Would have been a dream to get a LotR's calendar with santa Gandalf.

Im a little surprised we haven't seen a super heroes or LotRs one, perhaps three is enough for tlg and there isn't one they'd like to drop. Im not surprised they still focus on police and fire, its the core of their city market with reason. Police is still my boys favourite. As an adult though id far rather have one tie in with the winter village (but how long until we see the winter village police station?) but as an adult m also too old for advent calendars. ;)

LEGO would probably feel like they'd be giving away too much minifig-wise. If you look at the SW ones, nearly all of the figs are generic figures. That wouldn't really work with Superheroes, because there aren't a lot of generic characters.

LotR maybe would work better than SH though, as you could have more generic 'army-building' figures of various races and 'kingdoms?' (sorry, I'm only a very casual Tolkien fan so I don't know the proper term).
