Technique for building a second floor on a modular moc

  The flooring in modular buildings is usually created just as you said using large plates linked by attaching narrower plates beneath (two by however long is required like these for instance: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=4282). It is a very strong design and remains sturdy even with large gaps in the floor for stairwells or skylights.

  Ok, that's exactly what I was thinking. I'll give that a shot.
  
  I'm using LDD and making a library. I saw one on here the other day that inspired me so I decided to give it a shot. I'm trying to not to make it look identical, however some aspects are similar. I like it so far!
  
  I'll be headed to Downtown Disney in Orlando, FL in the next week or so; I'll be able to pick up a bunch of bricks there if I decide to actually build it.

  It is always worth downloading the instructions from lego.com for similar sets, to see how lego does it in official sets. You can learn a lot by "reading" the instructions. And even more by trying out some of the techniques. You don't need to own the set, just try out various sections with whatever colour bricks / plates / parts you have.

  That's great advice. I'll give it a shot. I figured out how to get the second floor base built! So now I just need to finish it!
  
  I think my next task is conserving pieces so that this thing is more affordable if ever actually build it.

  Which library are you building? Is it rocao's with the bottom floor brick red, the top floor tan and the roof black? If so, about 70% of the pieces came from the Fire Brigade set and that is probably the best way to get hold of them. I've recreated this myself so let me know if you have any questions, though I don't have it at the moment as a friend took it to Brickfair. The only pieces I had to bricklink were the lion heads, the grey paddles and some of the roof pieces. It did use every last 2x2 plate I own though.

  Yes! I believe it was rocao's. I'm altering the inside setup a lot and adding an upstairs porch for patrons to read on.
  
  Thanks for the heads up with the Fire Brigade set. I'll give that a look. I'm headed to a Lego store in a few weeks so I'll see what options I have there. I know they have the setup where you fill up a cup with whatever pieces for a set price. If that seems economically smarter, I might consider that; though, I'm not sure the variety of pieces available at the store.
  
  I'll be sure to post my finished product when it's done. Would you suggest posting it in this thread or a new one?

  There is a modular MOC thread, where you originally found the photo. I think a lot of people follow that thread.
  
  The PAB wall at Downtown Disney is fantastic but I don't know that you'll find a large percentage of what you need. What you can do is buy FB and then buy the extra parts there, the tan and white pieces for upstairs, translucent pieces for the window, etc.
  
  When I'm home I'll get you a link to my flicker so you can see my interpretation, it's about time I updated it anyhow.
