When will 10188 Death Star discontinue?

This set was released in 2008, right? When will it discontinue? Should I purchase one now or will it still be around in the future (say 6-12 months).

    I am not completely sure, but I heard it was being discontinued this year. If that is indeed the case, I would buy it ASAP.

    Amazon currently has 317 in stock, so they aren't running out tomorrow.

    If you want to check to see their stock, I suggest rocao's excellent tip. Just add one to your cart, go to your cart and update it to 999, and the cart will automatically lower it to the stock.

    This probably isn't 100% accurate, but I've been checking every few days and it is going down normally so it's definitely not just a random number.

    It's marked for discontinuation this year. As the year's almost halfway over, l imagine that if they haven't ceased production of new sets yet they will soon and what they offer will be coming from inventory.

    The Death Star was originally released in Sept/Oct...so if it is being discontinued then there is only 4-5 months left. I would pick one up...I did.

    Amazon had more than double that amount about a month ago. 317 sets can go quickly, and the last 100 will go MUCH more quickly than the rest. A panic sets in when people feel as though the door will be shut. That said, my local LEGO store has a big Death Star in their window now, my gut is they have enough inventory to last till the Fall, and that it will sell out sometime in the pre-holiday sales rush, kind of like Green Grocer did last year.

    I picked up 3 of these recently, and that's about my limit.

    I would love to pickup one before they discontinue them but right now with all the spending I've been doing, I'll have to cross my fingers and hope there is still some left by the fall.

    @brickupdate, I agree with your logic, but I'm not sure many people know about finding how much stock is left. If they displayed their inventory on the page itself, then yes, the last 100 would go significantly faster.

    Regardless, unless you have to take time to gather some money for it, pull the trigger. I doubt it will go on clearance or have a big sale in the last few months, it's a popular set.

    I have noticed that this set has gone onto backorder on lego.co.uk. Expected ship date is August the 9th. I also noticed that the brickset entry has the UK availability listed as 29 Jun 08 - 06 Jul 11. Is this confirmation that its discontinued or are the brickset availability dates somehow linked to the lego shop site?

    sorry for dragging this up but it seemed the most appropriate place for it.

    Hey squiz - I'm curious too about the Brickset retired "end date" as well. BTW, how does Brickset get the "retired date"? Does Lego contact them - or is it a weekly check of Lego.com. As far as I can tell their is no announcement on the retire dates from Brickset, they just appear one day.

    Even if the Death Star just went retired, because it's the summer, I imagine, they'll be there until end of August. After that, bets are off.

    Thanks for clearing that up Matthew!

    Seems like the Death star will be around for a bit longer then as they are accepting backorders.

    Why are people buying them for full price at Amazon.com right now?
    They are at TRU.com and BOGO50 (unless they are sold out already)...
    Just checked, they appear to be still available

    Did they not retire the x-wing as well. I heard about the DS being discontinued and bought it, great but expensive buy.

    But they could always sell the other one they receive and get their money back for 1 one them, then have one for only about 330 :-)

    I'm not saying the "keep one, resell the other" approach isn't logical... far from it. But it simply just isn't for everyone. There are plenty of people that either don't know how or don't want to sell on eBay, Craigslist, etc.

    There are more stupefying examples of consumer ignorance, which actually keeps TRU in business for the most part the rest of the time when there are no sales :P

    I'll go halfsies on a DS!

    Not that they may know, or tell all, but the clerk at my local Lego store thinks the DS will be discontinued to make room for the Super Star Destroyer in the line-up. Seems logical.

    I got mine. Used my 10% coupon at the Lego store last night. I'm not farting around with TRU, and why I love Lego, I don't plan on adding it to my investment portfolio. :o)

    i need to call LEGO. I don't seem to have the 10% coupon in my catalog. so either I'm incapable of locating it, or it wasn't there.

    You think they'll drop it before next Christmas? I know it's been around A LOT longer than the average set... but what model could viably replace it? Back when Jabba's Palace was rumored to be a $300+ set (which would have been completely awesome), I could have seen it, but I can't imagine any set that could fill that void. And, as far as I know, it's still a huge seller for LEGO. Still... it IS in its fourth year... and I guess it has to retire sometime.

    It might stay, it might go, who knows... According to my local Lego store, it does sell well, but I live in an affluent area so parents here buy them for their kids, less so direct sales to AFOLs.

    One issue is that SSD is probably never going to sell well until DS leaves, it looks poor on offer by comparison. I suspect DS will be replaced by a $500 "playable UCS" set sometime this year or next, a $500 set will make SSD look reasonable by comparison.

    Or perhaps they will just keep making it, but sooner or later you'd think everyone who wants one, will have one, but what do I know.

    I do know that if you don't have one and want one, sitting around waiting is a waste of time. Go buy it, or don't... but don't complain if it retires and you missed it, after all you've had 4 YEARS to buy one. :) A lot of people watched UCS Falcon for a long time and ignored it, thinking "oh sure, one day I'll get that", then it up and disappeared and look what happened with THAT! :)

    Oh I also heard that the DS was going to go up in price. I can't see it going up too much unless it's really selling well though. It usually would go on sale, but Lego might be changing that now with the big sets.

    @LegoFanTexas I hope they make a playable $500 UCS next. If they made a cloud city with a ton of minifigs or something like that I might buy it. I don't think they will though because there are two $400 sets out now and they usually just make big ships in UCS. What playable sets could they make that would appeal to the majority of star wars/lego fans? If it was that much money it would have to come with a lot of minifigs like the DS and maybe some vehicles.

    The DS will be discontinued once everyone has had an opportunity to theorize that it will be discontinued.

    @Dougout - In terms of large scale UCS environments, I really think the only one that would be as mini-fig and setpiece friendly as the Death Star would have been a $300+ Jabba's Palace (this seems quite unlikely at this point, however). Though, I'd buy a properly done Cloud City in a heartbeat and I wouldn't mind seeing a large scale Ewok Village.

    @y2josh Yea I think Jabba's Palace is out of the question now that there is already one coming out this summer. It looks cool though, with all the minifigs, probably around $100. I could see Ewok Village as a possibility, it would go great with battle of endor. Hoth Base would be cool too, but I don't know how popular it would be. Next UCS will most likely be an A-wing, B-wing or any new rebel ship I think. I would like to see a few big ships from the Rebel Fleet like the medical frigate and a bunch of ships from clone wars and the prequel trilogy.

    I am wishing someone would travel and visit us from the US and carry the DS with him/her only for me to save the shipping expense which would be around 100 or so bucks. Already the price is over 400 and won't be coming down.

    Maybe @LegoFanTexas would write my name on his will and leave me one of the DS :)

    Death Star is not a UCS (is it?!) and I don't think a playable environment can be compared to the vision of what LEGO thinks the UCS sets are. I have always assumed these were (sometimes) non-minifig scale models. The most accurate representation of a ship. So even if they did an Ewok Village, it wouldn't get the UCS designation.

    The Death Star 2 was a UCS set (the half completed version of the Death Star) which is why it hasn't really skyrocketed on the aftermarket: it's yet another set with a bazillion gray bricks. Yes, it has gone up in price in the aftermarket, but not like the Falcon.

    Compare playing with almost ANY UCS set with the non-UCS Death Star. They aren't in the same league. From what I could tell, LEGO didn't seem to do that well on the Falcon - there were so many reports of them discounted before it was retired. Death Star seems to be different, but someone at LEGO has to be worried about a $400 Ewok Village's appeal. Did Battle of Endor fly off the shelves indicating the need for a $400 version?!

    Then again, LEGO could throw a curveball, and come up with a $400 Galactic Senate set - the most boring set ever! :)

    lol, they'd probably include 100 unique minifigs and it would be a huge seller.

    ^^ In the May 4th poster last year, 10188 was counted as a UCS. It's certainly ultimate!

    ^ I can count at least five on that poster I wouldn't consider a UCS - Cloud City being the most obvious. Ultimate, yes, but UCS.....no.

    I think the 1xxxx models are often tossed under the UCS blanket, but really, sets like the Sandcrawler, Death Star and Cloud City are basically just very expensive cool sets. I don't know if LEGO officially considers them UCS, though. Either way, I want a super expensive Jabba's Palace and Ewok Village.

    Wonder why we haven't seen a Death Star mini set? And no, the new "Planet Series" doesn't count with 2 half cylinders that make a plastic ball they call a Death Star. I mean a nice 100-piece set with string and a Technic brick to hang from a ceiling.
