The loss of 700 parts shows, and while I get that they are trying to hit the price point of $150, I honestly prefer the $200 price point because I think they can just do so much more with it. At $200, PC would have had a third floor and a larger theater I think...

A price point of $200 would also knock a lot of people out of buying the model to begin with though. If you browse through all the above posts, most people were praising it, but already counting it off if the retail was set to high. LEGO has smartly, and I believe correctly, lowered the price down to $150 and, yes, at the same time shaved off roughly 700 from the set. However, this is merely a return to standard format of the modulars. Even I probably would have counted it off had the price point been at or above $200.

If you wanted LEGO to usurp the previous set every time in terms of size, you would eventually find yourself paying $400 for a 4 floor modular :-)

There will always be places where LEGO could have made it better, however that is where they leave it up to you. Every buyer will have some little quirks with the modular I'm sure, but LEGO is smart enough to leave them room to customize the set to what they want. Whether that is throwing in another movie poster, or enlarging the model to make the theater larger, or even adding a 3rd floor. As I like to say... If you want it, build it!

@LFT - The sparse interior is the only thing keeping this from being better than Fire Brigade. I do think they shot themselves in the foot by making this a corner building, since that gives the actual structure a much smaller footprint, but I still think it's superior to both of the corner alternatives, and also

As to Town Hall, it's actually one of the blander buildings (with the exception of the excellent first floor) in the lineup and the extra pieces really don't help it do much except for look odd on the street. Town Hall is still my third favorite building, but it's a significant step down from Fire Brigade and it looks to be quite a step down from this model as well. The shot that shows all three lined up really makes it evident how much more detail is in this set versus the previous two.

That said, I am concerned about how it will look in the overall layout. The exterior is so much nicer than most of the others... and the sidewalk seems like it's going to look extremely out of place with the 'walk of fame' and searchlights. So I'll reserve final judgment for March.

Personally, I think it would look pretty ridiculous if it were any taller, but to each their own, I suppose.

My opinion... and my opinion only...

If you can't afford $200 for a modular, then you shouldn't be buying $150 modulars either. Both are beyond normal purchases that shouldn't be purchased by anyone who has to count either amount before spending.

But that is the parent coming out in me I'm sure, thinking of all the foolish money I spent when I was younger, if only I had listened to my parents, who gave me sage advice that I completely ignored. :)

@LFT, I think "Being able to afford" does not necessarily mean I have $150 but not $200. Some people have budgets and limits on what they spend on things like Lego, which is a good thing.

I could spend $3000 on a MF but I choose not to as it is more then my Lego budget allows.

I do agree though, if you actually do not have $200 to your name you should not spend $150 on Lego.

As far as the Cinema goes, I'm not too concerned about the interior, so being a little bare is fine as I generally just look at my modulars sitting on the shelf. Don't think I have taken the floors apart since they were built.

Oh get real. It is called having a budget. Nothing to do with parenting. I think it is crazy for parents to own military assault rifles. So there.

$150 or $200, I'm going to buy, so the price doesn't really matter to me, BUT...

I do like that its $150. I think we have too many releases at $200 and suddenly that becomes the Modular norm. Next thing you know, there's a $250 model one year. Then suddenly the range becomes $200-250. Keeping them mostly at $150, sets a collectible precedent for them. Yes, they'll be the occasional $200 model with more pieces and a larger size, but overall they all fit with each other. As someone else stated, Town Hall does look a tad out of place due to size. It's not horrible in my opinion and I like it anyway, but I like the size of the others and the small town Main Street feel they bring. This isn't a huge metroplex, it's a local cinema (the styling is odd in that aspect, yes, but that's a different argument). Of course, my LEGO citizens live on Main Street. They aren't big city folk.

If you have read all of his posts you will know his views on the matter.

But that is not really the point. He brought parenting into the matter so I had to throw it back in his face.

From a reseller stand point $150 is a much better price point. You can afford to hoard more. From a Collectors stand point it is great because you can potentially busget in more modulars or even two Cinemas if you want to build a larger more complete model.

Personally I would have preferred more detail, no stickers, and a $200 price point. On sale it would have been around $150 or less anyway. Seems strange to go backwards from Town Hall especially with a building that should be very detailed. The interior is barely more detailed than the Town Plan cinema. Walmart should have this for $100 on sale, I'll scoop a copy then.
  • gmpirategmpirate Member Posts: 1,654
For me personally, I'd rather see $200+ for modulars. I'd also like to see some short instructions/suggestions on how to combine multiple sets to make large scale buildings :) I really don't have the time to design big mocs myself but have always been fascinated with the huge buildings people come up with. There's probably not a big enough market for what I want but I can dream . . .
  • mathewmathew Member Posts: 2,099
I'm sure Lego has done their research. Town Hall probably doesn't sell nearly as well as Grand Emporium or Fire Brigade. Lego wants to move product and make money so they determined that $150 for roughly 2,000 pcs. is the best price point. I agree. Town Hall to me looks way over sized compared to the others anyway.
  • PaperballparkPaperballpark Member Posts: 4,268
^ The designer video for it states that it's meant to be bigger than the rest, simply because it is a town hall, and town halls tend to be bigger and more imposing than other buildings around them.

VERY glad to see this set is $150. It keeps this line at least accessible for new collectors and AFOLS, those who may not have shelves and shelves of LEGO as many of us in here have.

Overall, I am unimpressed with the cinema so far. I don't know why, but to ME, it doesn't seem to break new ground or offer some level of detail that just wow'd. me. It is "fine." I will certainly buy it and be happy with it. But with all of the cool $100+ LEGO sets that have come out in the past couple years, I suppose it is hard to continually raise the bar without raising the price. Looking at Cafe Corner and Grand Emporium next to me, this one seems very similar so far.

But I want to see it in person, and of course, go through the build before I really decide on how much I like it. The BUILD process itself really determines so much about a set.

Thanks all for the thoughts here!

One more thing: I would rather they put out a somewhat average set at $150 than a more amazing set at $200. This is LEGO afterall, we can add another 400 bricks and cool elements to it at our own expense/choice if we each like!

She didn't mention them, but I don't really see any way that the screen (at the very least) doesn't wind up being a sticker. It's definitely a sticker in the pre-release photos we've seen.

I'm in Birmingham now, they're stickers. Posters, marquee and screen. Also, they haven't printed the star tiles yet.

LEGO used to do add-on packs in the 80s, I don't think they sold well, or they would still be doing them. :)

Add-on packs are such a limited market, unless that IS your market. See American Girl for such a market.

But with LEGO, people buy the box and that is that. I'm a bit shocked they do the power functions box for Technic, but that does have a role and the box fits a bunch of different sets. They wouldn't do it for just a single set.
  • JenniJenni Member Posts: 1,390
@legoboy I assume they're working on it. I don't think they'll be shipping the set with plain tiles with the correct part number written on them.

There's no reason for the cinema to be bigger than it is. All a larger size would do is create a big chair-filled space, which is for all practical intents and purposes an empty space. More seats add nothing to the set design, features nor playability of the model. It just adds cost and Lego wisely realizes that increased cost has to be off-set with an increase in justifiability. More seats and empty space doesn't justify the additional cost.

Faire price I guess (although canadian MSRP sucks). I would have paid more to have printed bricks instead of stickers though.
  • bellybutton290bellybutton290 Member Posts: 453
On the fence on this one. Stickers are an issue for sure, not loving the limo on any level and the interior is limited but agree with what prof1515 stated above in TLG's likely justification for this. The exterior on the other hand is great and I particularly like the palace sign and the star tiles. The intial (and hopefully final) price point is a huge plus for me provided it stays at this stated price, and should it not go up prior to release, will represent a great price per piece ratio which has been all to rare in the latest few years, especially if like me you mostly buy licenced themes.

I think a big "chair-filled" space would be pretty cool. It would be fun to populate the seats with different minifigs. Some of the Lego B&M stores have displays of a theatre with a ton of seats.

For the amount of added cost it's just not a viable consideration. As for thatre models in stores, they are displays and not products. They also have human-sized sculptures at some stores. That doesn't mean they'd consider mass-producing them for sale.

No, unless you have seen the Chase McCain thread ;)

I like the $150 price point. This gives us room to add and modify the building to our liking.

The 80's Parts Packs may not have sold well. I'm not quite sure. The internet may change the interest. I think TLG should bring them back. Special elements to spruce up your buildings.

Is it just me or is anyone else getting starting to get less and less excited with every new modular release and exclusives in general?, considering the hugely extended shelf life they seem to be getting they just don't seem that "exclusive" anymore, as i know i could lose interest in Lego tomorrow and come back in several years and they will still be available.

  • PaperballparkPaperballpark Member Posts: 4,268
^ as far as I'm aware each of the Modulars has been available for three years.

I think there's probably just more people aware of them.
  • YodaliciousYodalicious Member Posts: 1,366
^^I'd say it's more of expecting more each time as opposed to being less excited.

But what do I know...I'm very excited for the release of the PC and will buy it right away. Just because it might be available for 3-4 years doesn't mean I don't want it in my city now. Even if they have long shelf lives, they only release so many modulars, so unless they start releasing 5 a year or some absolute stinkers, I'll still get excited for each new one.

I guess my interest in the modulars has waned since i first set my eyes on them, im far more excited about the LOTR exclusive :)

Personally I would like to see something in-between the modulars and the architecture line. The modulars are too restrictive in regards to the need for them to stack next to each other and be a certain height and depth. 2,000 pcs. can go a long way if they are used creatively.
  • YodaliciousYodalicious Member Posts: 1,366
^^Well, I'm with you on that! LotR was what brought me out of my dark ages. Of course, the modulars weren't far behind.

I appreciate the $150 price. I could however, do without that terrible "limo" in favour of more interior detail or fewer stickers.

The modulars, or I suppose creator expert now, is the theme I look forward to the most. I actually expected to be very excited about the Lord of the Rings/Hobbit sets but I've bought nothing from either theme so far. I think it is because I have a preconceived idea of what Lord of the Rings "should" be like and those sets do not meet my expectations. The modulars, on the other hand, are a blank slate and I'm happier to accept them as is.
  • emilewskiemilewski Member Posts: 482
I agree with Yodalicious. It does not matter to me how long their shelf life is as there is only one per year that I look forward to with anticipation. This year I will start designing my own to supplement the official releases.
