Technic design competition

The 10 finalists
http://technic.us.lego.com/en-us/Campaign/Finalists.aspx

I had something similar to the quad bike but with a rider too, never finished it.

I like the MarkusOSX light blue truck, it looks like it was designed by an adult.

The Hummer clone is leading by a wide margin, I wonder if they can even do it without getting a license?

Black Dodge Charger is leading. I'd prefer it in red/orange with a Confederate flag on top!

ah yeah somehow i missed the score on that one.

To be honest, I'm slightly underwhelmed by almost all of these (without wanting to rain on anyone's parade). I find that a lot of them look very similar...

Surprised there isn't a lunchbox rc style van in there, that would have been pretty cool. A lot of them are similar and not very different to the crawler itself. Seem to have missed an opportunity with this, will it get made and sold?

Tbh it looks like its turned into a joke about now considering the comments on the boss thread, definitly not in the spirit of Lego if you ask me. I also agree with Plasmodium, pretty much the only reason to buy one would be resale value they all look fairly naff.

The Lego Technics Competition voting has been taken over by Russia

Basicially, three days ago, the model winning by a margin of 35% was 'Crazy1993' - The Police Enforcer. Then a Russian lego website posted there number one news item as 'Vote for local Russian boy rm88'.

Now the RM88 model is ahead by 500 votes, and almost certainly is going to win the competition

This is NOT the in the spirit of lego.

Please show your support for fair play, and vote for who you genuinly want to win

That might make an interesting article for the home page. Where is the Russian site?

try this link - you will need to translate, but you browser should do it for you
    http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=ru&u=http://www.doublebrick.ru/&prev=/search?q=double+brick+ru&hl=en&tbo=d&sa=X&ei=cYH4UPqvEcSs0QXTnYCoDw&ved=0CDcQ7gEwAA

Also - A russian political chat site calles YAP is running chatrooms promoting the russian entry

This isn't the fault of rm88, but it still is very unfairly penalising all of the other entries

Also, look at the image in this attached spreadsheet - taken earlier today - note the number of hits!

Reading the Russian forum maybe the translation is borked in google but it seems like Rm88 started this by asking for support, started waving the flag, opened a can of worms with possible allegations of double voting and is even recieving flak from some Russian Lego fans that what is transpiring is not in the spirit of a Lego run competition.

I voted for the Hummer mainly because I always liked Hummers, while the Russian forum users in the Russian site seem to keep pointing out the part count or weight of the hummer as a reason not to vote for it they should realise TLG won't release a set that won't work or sell so naturally the Technic designers in TLG would tweek any entry to make it viable, hell I might even purchase it if they make it slightly better looking.

Just like a UK general election, I have completely wasted my vote. MarkusOSX light blue truck is never going to win, but neither will the Green Party.

My entry for the competition was based on the idea of making a body design for the 9398 chassis that looked fuller and more robust than the original. I therefor chose the legendary Hummer H2 to be my inspiration which is shown in the images below:

    imageimageimageimage

I could not exactly replicate the Hummer design due to copyright reasons. The design I eventually came up with after weeks of hard work is shown below:

    imageimage

The body includes a manually operated winch which could easily be motorized, opening doors and tailgate, and the battery is changed in exactly the same way as the original body design. There is also a rear roof section which can be removed to give the choice between full bodied or pickup style forms.

Because the Hummer has such a bulky design, I had to be careful to build lots of the body around the wheels to reduce the height and not just stick the body right on top of the 9398 chassis. Even though this is a virtual model, it is obvious that this will greatly optimize stability, not just by lowering the height, but by having much of the weight (around the doors) far lower than in other designs.

I would also like to point out that the main purpose of this model is not to be able to crawl over very steep obstacles, but rather present a great building challenge and an imposing appearence while still being able to drive over everyday mildly rough terrain.

Just days before the top 10 finalists were announced, I decided that this design would look brilliant in a police theme as there are many good examples of Hummers that have been adapted into police themed vehicles:

    imageimageimageimage

The final result of my work was this, the Highway Enforcer:

    imageimageimage

This design has exactly the same functions as the original but has a totally overhauled colour scheme and new accessories such as the police lighting and rear radio antennas. The new version was so successful that it was picked for the top 10 finalists over the original entry.

Below are some images showing the LDD model in more detail:

    imageimageimageimage

The first image shows the ground clearance and height of the body as well as showing the space above the wheels left for suspension travel.
The second image shows the space under the beam structure used to maintain rigidity when hinging the bodywork to change the battery. It is also possible to make out some of the gearing for the winch.
The third image shows some of the interior. There are only 3 seats because I could not fit 4 in due to the hinge mechanism positioning for the battery changing. I think that actually only 2 are needed as this would reduce weight and parts.
The fourth image shows the door lock and hinge. The hinge actually contains 2 smaller hinges so that the door does not get stuck on the frame while opening and closing. The lock consists of the grey rotating part on the end of the door which slots in behind the door pillar when the handle is turned.

The reason that this had to be a digital design is because I don't have anywhere near the number of parts to needed to build anything like a 4 x4 crawler real life. I played with LEGO all the time when I was a child but now I am at University and this is the only chance to do something amazing with LEGO that I have had since then.

EVERY VOTE COUNTS so please take a moment of your time and follow the link to vote:

    VOTE HIGHWAY ENFORCER

You can only vote until the 22nd of January inclusive and you will need to create a LEGO ID account if you do not already have one so hurry and make your voice heard!

    Thank you for your attention!

This entry was in first place until rm88's design drastically pulled ahead because of good advertising within the Russian LEGO community, but I do not believe hope is lost especially with such an active community!

This is a prime example of why I never had any interest in these type of competitions between builders and think that they are a bad idea...
  • crazy_1993crazy_1993 Member Posts: 2
EDIT: It came second (to Russia apparently).

So does anybody know if the pre-order for the Technic Challenge #41999 will be happening in July or not? I think they originally published on Facebook that there would be one for VIPs and then that not got removed.
