Top 10 Star Wars sets

Hi, still sort of new here. Just got out of the dark ages ( always a fan but never had the discretionary money) because of my Star Wars- and Lego obsessed 4-year-old. Been going through the troves of available sets and wondered which 10 sets have the most bang for the buck in terms of value and playability. No, I'm not concerned with investment purposes (the joy my son and I get out of them is worth the price tag) and not just looking at the big sets. I've come up with my wish list (no particular order) for little man, but curious to see what everyone else thinks.

1. Millennium Falcon 7965
Just got this for Christmas for $99 and he wants to spend every waking minute going through all its features. Iconic and very playable.

2. X-Wing Fighter 9493
Another Christmas gift of his (not built yet) since it's his second favorite starship.

3. Sand Crawler 10144
He loves the scene with the Jawas and we're hoping to one day land this set.

4. Slave 1 8097
Bought this used because who doesn't love Boba Fett?

5. AT-AT Walker
Not sure which is the best one to get but the battle at Hoth was one of his favorites.

6. Desert Skiff 9496 and Jabba Sail Barge
Found the skiff for a bargain $10 (a BOGO deal) and looking for the barge (once again not sure which one to get as I heard there will be a new one in 2013) to complete the scene.

7. Endor/Ewok set
Another favorite scene of son (not so much me). I guess the key is getting some speeders, AT-STs and ewoks. Not so sure what to get. Might require piecing together separate sets.

8. Snowspeeder
Another one that I'm unsure of which one to get, but another classic starship.

9. Vader's Tie Fighter
Have the classic Tie 9492 and looking to get Vader's iconic ship but I'm unsure of the best one to get.

10. Landspeeder 8092
On the wish list, looks like great value and fun.

Curious to see what other folks have on their list.

    I'd have to put the Death Star 10188 on top of my list. It's a joy to build and has endless playability.

    #7965, #9493 and #10144 are all great sets that would make my list. The Endor base wouldn't make it on to my list, but my son (8) loves it.

    The Motorized AT-AT is the best of the walkers. It looks the part, and walks!

    Vader's TIE Fighter #8017 is nice looking, but bits fall off too easily during play in my experience.

    Tantive IV #10198 makes my list. A fun build and a great looking model, although not a lot of playability for kids.

    I notice you are concentrating on classic sets. There are a few Clone Wars sets that tick all the boxes for me and my son, amongst them the AT-TE Walker #7675, Republic Gunship #7676 and Attack Cruiser #8039.

    Finally I have to add the UCS Falcon. An amazing build and a fantastic centrepiece, but not much playability. You certainly can't pick it up and swoosh it around!

    Yes, my list is definitely focused on original trilogy since those were his favorite three movies. I also left off UCS versions since they're not meant for play.

    The Death Star is up there on his list but my fear is that his 2-year-old brother will come through and "blow up the main reactor" by knocking it down.

    We did pick up some good post-Xmas deals on some Clone sets.

    For Endor, you should look to pick up the Battle of Endor, which gives you the bunker and many figs, Ewok Battle, which almost certainly s available on sale, and the Endor battle pack.

    If you like Hoth, you may want to look at the various sets. They piece together well.

    In both cases, some sets are discontinued but deals can be found for not too much over RRP.

    Thanks. Yes, it does seem like there isn't a definitive set for either Hoth or Endor. Might complete the Jabba set with the palace, barge and rancor.

    Definitive Endor set is #8038 The Battle of Endor. It has most of the major players and depicts the key scene.

    A couple of things to add:
    The Star Destroyer #6211 is a great set. It's kind of fragile, but it looks great on the outside and has a nice interior for playing.

    The new Hoth set #75014 is a good Hoth starter set. Comes with a snowspeeder. And who doesn't love a Tauntan? #8089, Wampa Cave is a great add-on. Another snowspeeder.

    For me the Death Star would have to be the definitive Lego Star Wars set. I would also number the UCS Millennium Falcon and the newest one, set 7965, as must have sets. Last of all would be the Battle of Endor and Jabba's Palace sets. You may pay a premium for Jabba's Palace, but it is an awesome set. In fact, I think Jabba's Palace, the Rancor Pit, the Desert Skiff and a Sail Barge (the actual vehicle in the new one doesn't look too good), so perhaps the old one, make for a brilliant group of models.

    Just finished putting together the newer Jabba's Palace and Rancor Pit this morning. It's one of my favorite scenes so I knew I'd like the sets, but came away liking them more than I thought I would. Plenty of minifigs and the entire structure has a good substantial size when put together. I came out of my dark ages 6 months ago and have built around 50 sets in that time, but this is one of my favorites. Neither is a great value in terms of price per piece, but good playability and good looks. And TRU has a BOGO50 until tomorrow I believe. That's not a great deal for the Palace because of its markup, but the Pit is only $5 above retail, so it's not awful if you pair it with something else (I did the TRU truck with it).

    I would say the #10144 Sandcrawler was by far one of my favorite builds. I enjoyed the #7163 Republic Gunship.

    In my Top 5 are:

    As others have said, Millenium Falcon #10179 (or #7965 is a real good scale down).

    UCS Imperial Shuttle. Its minifig scale, so will work well for recreating scenes (but still not swooshable) and one of the best looking Lego sets ever made IMO.

    #7676 Republic Gunship for its great looks and high playability. I also prefer #10195 AT-OT Dropship over the #7675 AT-TE. The open top design allows for nice troop placement and playability. Not current, but its still reasonably priced at 1.5xRRP.

    Jabba's Palace, Rancor Pit, Skiff and Old Sail Barge as a single choice, since they all belong together =)

    Update: went to Walmart today and picked up 7962 for $35 and 7956 for $12.50. Was hoping for Jabba's Palace but they were cleaned out.

    10212 imperial shuttle is my fav ucs and overall and the 8038 battle of endor set is my choice for non ucs set.

    8038 is a great set for play - huge number of figs at the pricepoint, speeders, AT-ST and the shield generator bunker itself that has blow-off panels to simulate explosion. It's a pity that most of the classic sets you talk of are now discontinued. We must be due another Vader's advanced Tie soon, perhaps you could knock one up via bricklink, using the current Tie's cockpit window?

    Does Amazon.de ship to the US? If so then Jabbas palace is there at a very reasonable €89 right now.

    Looking for Jabba's Palace on markdown but not finding any luck. Wasn't feeling it initially, but with the new Rancor Pit, it'll be a nice--albeit expensive--scene.

    I've got love for most UCS but I need for it to have playability for son.
