But my initial impression... *shudders*
On the plus side, LOTR looks awesome - better than I thought it was going to be, and we get more LEGO Castle - with a Dragon! (My Fantasy Crownies are going to be so happy. Or maybe terrified, lol.) The line looks a bit juniorized, but I'll take it. Anything I can do to support LEGO Castle. I don't want my knights going the way of LEGO Pirates. (May they rest in peace.)
;-)
One set not in the catalog coming this summer, though, is a new "city square" set that should be a TRU exclusive. Can't wait to see that one.
-3 creator houses, small/medium/large - cool!
-City has a TON of sets overall, some of them don't look too bad - but no buildings at all
-Sail Barge is awful. Instead of doing it right at the ~$120-130 range, looks like they are trying to hit a $80-$100 price point and it just looks terrible. the original is better by leaps and bounds
-LOTR sets all look fantastic
(Note to self: Preliminary. They're just preliminary.)
LOTR looks promising.
I'll buy the 3 City sets pictured that haven't been released yet. @Murphquake will be happy to add another ambulance to his collection.
To me the Sail Barge looks inferior in comparison to the last one, although the Minifigures look rather nice. As for the Republic Gunship, I actually think that model looks excellent, why Lego has released one so soon after the last however is beyond me. The previous model was so good I can only think of one or two minor things which they need to change. Just as long as they make some good bubble turrets for it! The Minifigures there look brilliant, I am so happy to see some more Episode II sets, it has been far too long, but I am sorry to see only a single Original Trilogy set, and a poor incarnation of a great vehicle at that. So all in all, mixed feelings...
Sail Barge *1/2
Anemic-looking model that appears not just to be too small but also poorly designed.
Republic Gunship **1/2
Too similar to previous one though the Padme figure is nice.
Forest Ambush *
Not much to see here, folks. Move along.
Gold Getaway *1/2
Clunky vehicle and dubious extra stuff yet sadly one of the "best" of what looks like an awful line.
The Gatehouse Raid NO STARS
This is beyond terrible. The return of those stupid big-wheeled vehicles is just one of the things about this set which scream "juniorization" and "fugly".
Dragon Mountain *1/2
Not much to look at really and yet still better than the majority of these sets.
King's Castle *1/2
Blocky-looking castle could be acceptable if it were for asthetic as opposed to just cheap reasoning. Big-wheeled vehicle seals its fate.
City Starter **1/2
Great introductory set for kids but beyond that not of much interest.
Grand Prix Truck ***1/2
Excellent design that really screams for more such sets like a track and competition to complete the subtheme.
Monster Truck Transporter **
While my neck isn't red enough to find any interest in this, it's modestly well-designed.
The Wizard Battle ***
Really just a glorified impulse set, it's got two good figures (though Saruman is really the only one worth getting if Gandalf is no different than earlier versions).
The Council of Elrond **1/2
Fanbois will no doubt cry about the size but it's adequate for the purpose of what it depicts.
The Battle of Black Gate **
The weakest in the LOTR summer line.
Pirate Ship Ambush **1/2
Not bad but not great either. Maybe the final, high-resolution pics will improve the look of this one.
At this point unless my son ends up with interest in Chima, I can point to just a few sets to interest my kiddos.
My 5 year old will like Ninjago and the new MBA, but both are line continuations. Dragon Mountain is one of the few things he will have interest in. China is the only area I see that could cause interest, but time will tell.
My girls, well, there is often next to nothing and this continues. Council of Elrond will be a no brainier for my 10 year old and Bag End.
Beyond that, there are Friend sets. I am not seeing much else new that they will have any interest in.
While it is nice that a non-licensed theme will not be one and done, I really think they picked the wrong theme to do this with. Even at our Lego store, Galaxy Quest has been sitting on the shelves, while other new lines are moving far better.
Although, who knows, maybe other kids will respond better to this line than mine have so far.
For me, Galaxy Squad is like a new take on Futuron - mostly white + secondary color vehicles with color-coordinated good guys. That part I love, but honestly, the bugs do nothing for me either. I'd rather see something like Blacktron, where it was always implied they were the bad guys, but I don't think they ever did a "vs" set, so they were able to get away with having two "human" sides.
Summer 2013 will have some good looking sets, but nothing worth crying over unless you're a Starwars fan. The Castle reboot seems totally random, and the sets are just as haphazard as ever. Good times.
The Republic Gunship looks almost the same as 7676, except probably missing the speeder. But the biggie will be whether stickers will be included in the final model. It looks too bare without the graphics. But we do get a new Amidala.
I am most curious with the ship mini- figs ... Seems quite surely you have the king of the dead and maybe a couple other of his kind in the centre ! Who is right next to them number 7 from left ?
Who are the identical 8 and 9 next to him
Mini-fig number 3 on the black gate set .
