I really enjoyed building Helms Deep. My complaint is not with the technique or the fun of the build... Its simply that I wish the overall size of the model was a bit bigger.

As far as the best castle build... I am partial to #6080 and #6085 . They have always been my favorite castles.

Black Falcon's Fortress (#6074 or #10039) is an absolute classic. I am not too knowledgeable about castle builds I but I loved (and still do) that one.

The Troll Fortress #7097 is a good build...so is Kings Castle Siege #7094...

My first castle was #6090 Royal Knight's Castle, and for that reason it has always been my favourite. If you didn't want to go trawling through the aftermarket you could go for #10223 Kingdoms Joust. There's also rumours of more Castle-themed sets for 2013.

Didn't like #10223, or the whole Kingdoms line. Best Castle sub theme for me was Fantasy Era (I slipped out of my dark ages in those days) and previous ones which had the Blacksmith set and Forest sets....hearing 2013 will bring a new sub theme but those will be a remake yes?

#6085 is probably my favorite. I do think #6086 looks great as well, even though it uses a BURP.

Castle themes over the years have been a favorite of mine. I have the yellow castle in good shape missing a couple of stickers, it is a fun build because it uses normal bricks, and no large wall pieces. 6080 is another favorite, I have had this castle since 1985 when it first came out and after a minor restoration it is 100% complete. And I have to say tied with the 6080 is the 6085 Black Monarch's Castle, the black and grey really make this castle stand out and the design with the angled walls is great. Only gripe with this one is the towers are hard to get minifigs in to out of.

Oh and my yellow castle remained built from when I got it back in 86 until I joined the navy in 2001 and was the first set I built back again when I came out of my dark ages.

I'd say #6080 is the best, #6085 is also nice and #6074 deserves a mention.

However, given that you say "Just finished Helms deep and loved it ... this type of build." These sets, and almost all mentioned above, are nothing like helms deep in terms of the style of build.

^ Agreed, none of the old sets mentioned here come close to Helms Deep, not least because they use the big 'wall and window' pieces and 'castle wall corner' pieces, not to mention the odd 'big ugly slope' and 'big ugly rock piece'. In other words they might look good but I'd only categorise them a 'great build' if I was comparing them to Duplo.

The only one above which doesnt use any of these 'big ugly' pieces is #10223 Joust, so I'd go for that if I were you - or #9472 Weathertop. Haven't built Helms Deep yet, but the circular build on Weathertop was the best castle build I've yet experienced - the images are a bit deceptive, there's a lot going on in those walls, build-wise.

The last King's Castle, aside from the gate, was a rather drab build. Too many large wall pieces. Overall it looks nice, but I sold it. I much prefer the intricate LotR builds even if they look a bit incomplete.

Weathertop looks a lot better above than on box. I like most of the mocks I see of european castles and churches the tower part in helms deep reminded me of them. Searched sets above and #7094 Looked great but don't know about the build. also does anyone know of a good castle moc link. thanks again for feedback

I don't care for Helm's Deep myself, but I do think King's Castle Siege (7094) is a similar build experience, with the added bonus of looking more 'finished' once completed.

1+ for this set! It was my first and only castle. I still have it, and put it up and take it down often.

Go for weathertop!! Okay so it's the biggest set I've built since coming out of my dark ages earlier this year, but it's an awesome build! I was planning on spreading the build out over 2 evenings, but once I'd started I couldn't stop!!

@sipmart242 Also, since MMV #10193 is about to be discontinued, you really should look at that. Not strictly a 'castle' but its in the castle series and its a superb build as well as being great value. (@minifigman11 should try it too :) )

Must admit Im enjoying thinking about castles again. Just thought of another which doesnt use 'big ugly' pieces and is a good build.. the Viking Fortress.

The door to Helm's Deep is my favourite sub build of a model for a long time. Feels solid.
