As someone who works in the technical profession, I enjoy looking at the patents Lego has filed to see where they are planning to take their product lines. One of the patents they filed in 2009 (in the USA) is entitled "ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTING BUILDING ELEMENT." If you look at the drawings (I didn't read the application in detail), it appears that they have devised a means to provide electrical connections through the blocks without using wires (i.e., using the blocks themselves). If they do this right (and I believe they will), the possibilities are endless for amazing sets.

    Interesting. Not unlike the 80s Light and Sound elements, I guess.

    Noteworthy that they didn't only patent the brick itself, but also the way in which it is manufactured. ;)
