[US] EXPIRED: TRU - BOGO 50% 11/25 - 12/1

edited December 2012 in Shopping USA/Canada
The TRU web site has this offer advertised, for online purchases by the looks of it. At this point it does not look like the offer is applying yet, but this seems to be normal for TRU should apply a little later, excludes Tecnic & Ninjago.

Hulk set is on-sale for $40, and BOGO works with it.
  • sidersddsidersdd Member Posts: 2,432
Reported markup on Hobbit sets at TRU (which should be popping in stores this week and should qualify for the BOGO):

Goblin King ($114.99); Unexpected Gathering ($79.99); Battle of the Wargs ($59.99); and the Mirkwood Set ($34.99)

FYI this sale is also going on at http://www.fao.com since they are owned by TRU. You can use a coupon code 955904 which is $20 off $100 to help offset some of the markup. 4% cashback through ebates too.
  • samiam391samiam391 Member Posts: 4,492
9497 is also marked down to $40, which is a small amount of savings.
  • sidersddsidersdd Member Posts: 2,432
#4439 Heavy Duty Copter is down to $40 as well.

    Thanks @Basta @sidersdd and @cbaker1974

6868 was a nice deal on TRU and the Ghost Train works out to be about $50/set before tax (if you buy two) and use that $20 off at FAO...that 4% cash back can negate a lot of the tax too depending on your state.

Even though the store ad does not exclude Star Wars, it seems like those are excluded on-line, at least for now.
  • ludzikludzik Member Posts: 429
Ugh..... @malachirobertson so the ad online says "ALL LEGO Construction sets" and has a pic (in the email) of the star wars jabba the hut set..... but you're right, it doesn't include them. You go to the store, they will match the online price (online they have better prices on the hulk escape and the Republic Striker) but they will not do BOGO 50% off if they match the price... so I call customer care and I'm trying to do a store pickup but they're balking at the SW sets saying that they are excluded from the "ALL Lego Construction sets" promotion........ so I went to YoYo.com and bought some stuff there instead ;)

Oh yeah, while on the phone with a customer service rep the FIRST time around when I asked for a supervisor, he said "above him there is only the VP of Toys R Us". To which I replied "I'll be blunt, but that sounds like bullshit to me" at which he said "you're cussing so by policy I can hangup with you... click...." what an a-hole..... oh well....

Starting at 6pm (eastern time?) there will be $25 off $150+ purchases if you use your MasterCard. Enter promo code MC25. Dunno if it stacks.

Don't care for the sale, but "excluding Galaxy Squad" implies wide release of the fist 2013 batch of sets tomorrow. Hopefully I can pick some of the new city sets up.

#8043 Motorized Excavator is on sale for $160. Would be $135 if you use your MasterCard tonight.

Harry Potter seems to be excluded as well.

EDIT: It actually seems that most of the reasonably priced sets are included in spite of the banner reading "ALL LEGO."
  • ludzikludzik Member Posts: 429
They seemed to have fixed it now.... took them time and they didn't call me either.... well, I called them back and read them the riot act and came out ahead :D
  • y2joshy2josh Member Posts: 1,996
^^That should have read 'excluded' in my edit above.

Thanks, this worked...was able to get it for $144 after tax. Good deal since it is sold out on [email protected]!

Thanks for the heads up. I had hoped to get some with the BOGO, but that sale excluded Technic and this ended up being a better deal anyway.

Thanks for the MC promo info. Grabbed 8043. Was thinking I would not find a deal on this set prior to EOL. Cheers!

Thought it over in the store today and picked up for Christmas the Barrel Escape and the Mirkwood Forest Hobbit sets. Figured the Barrel escape being a TRU exclusive (but one necessary to get all of the dwarves) I would end up paying that amount whether I got it today or a year from now. In the meantime the Mirkwood Forest set worked out to $17.49 and I was happy. Not a huge purchase, but I figured TRU would bite me either way with the Barrel Escape to why not get it today?

By the way, the MC25 code does stack with BOGO 50%...just as an example, using an MSRP of $210 (not using TRU's inflated price for the Potter bus) for the following 6 items would give a 38% discount before tax at $129.70:

    1
    LEGO City Heavy-Duty Helicopter (4439)
    $39.99

    1
    LEGO City Heavy-Duty Helicopter (4439)
    $22.52

    1
LEGO Harry Potter the Knight Bus (4866)
    $38.99

    1
LEGO Harry Potter the Knight Bus (4866)
    $21.95

    1
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes The Avengers Loki's Cosmic Cube Escape (6867)
    $19.99

    1
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes The Avengers Loki's Cosmic Cube Escape (6867)
    $11.26

    Cost Summary
    Subtotal $154.70
MasterCard® promotion activated! Pay $150 or more with MasterCard card and $25 discount will reflect at “Order Review" See Terms -$25.00
    Shipping $15.00
Free Standard Shipping on ANY purchase of $49 or more. Excludes video game hardware and oversized items! See Terms -$15.00
    Sales Tax $7.85
    Total Cost $137.55

  • ColoradoBricksColoradoBricks Member Posts: 1,659
Anyone knows why when using the MC25 code, 50% of 39.99 is $22.52, not $19.99 ?
  • tk79tk79 Member Posts: 329

^The math is a little funny, but you still come out about $19 ahead...I believe they are taking a percentage of the cost off each original item based on the $25 off, then giving you 50% off of that reduced price for the 2nd item.

I can't example it worth a damn, but for example, they add up the 39.99 + 38.99 + 19.99 and get a total number for the original items, then if you divide 39.99/that sum you get about 40.4%,

Multiply that x $25 and you get $10.10. They take half of that since it's for 1 item and ADD it to the cost of the original item and then give you 50% off of that to get $22.52

lol, it all makes sense in my head, but I can't explain it for anything.
  • tk79tk79 Member Posts: 329
^that example is for the Heavy Duty Helicopter btw

I didn't buy anything :( I was going to buy #6868 and the Knight Bus, but passed. Sometimes TRU has some great deals, but I didn't find anything that blew me away.

I really don't have the patience to figure out what is a good deal and what isn't, what stacks and what does not, what qualifies, which quantities, online or store pick-up only, etc. pita

According to TRU, all the 10XXX sets are not "LEGO Construction Sets" as none of these seem to be part of the BOGO. Even though they only list the following exclusions "books, Galaxy Squad, Ninjago, Technic, video games & video game accessories".

The 10XXX sets are the ones I am after :(

    ^^^^^^^^
Isn't the problem with this example that TRU online only allows ONE (1) discount per order? Or did they finally change that so you can make multiple pairs in the same order?

There's a couple decent deals to be had if you just go with retiring sets or the heavy helicopter since it's on sale...here's another combo (MSRP of $150 taken down to $100 before tax...apparently the MC code works based on the total presale value so you don't need to spend the full $150):

    1
LEGO Creator 3-in-1 Lighthouse Island (5770)
    $39.99

    1
LEGO Creator 3-in-1 Lighthouse Island (5770)
    $23.16

    1
LEGO Harry Potter the Knight Bus (4866)
    $38.99

    1
LEGO Harry Potter the Knight Bus (4866)
    $22.58

    Cost Summary
    Subtotal $124.72
MasterCard® promotion activated! Pay $150 or more with MasterCard card and $25 discount will reflect at “Order Review" See Terms -$25.00
    Shipping $13.50
Free Standard Shipping on ANY purchase of $49 or more. Excludes video game hardware and oversized items! See Terms -$13.50
    Sales Tax $5.98
    Total Cost $105.70

  • gmpirategmpirate Member Posts: 1,654
^ its random. Sometimes it says "max 2 items", but only lets you order one, and sometimes you can order two or three of the same item. Its really a lot of fun to try and figure out.

    Thanks everyone, I got:
    2 x #6868 Hulk's Helicarrier Breakout
    2 x #9497 Republic Striker-class Starfighter
    1 x #9490 Droid Escape
    1 x #9491 Geonosian Cannon
    for $134.19/42% off RRP

You know, in case no one noticed, the exclusion list might be implying which sets of 2013 TRUs already have in the back, just in case someone was "smart" enough to put them out. If that's true, why did I ever splurge my funds on BF!?!

Some stores already out the 2013 sets last week; this week it should go wide release.

The first wave has Galaxy Squad, Hobbit, City, Technic and Creator.

I was in TRU last night and was able to pick up 2 Creator sets 31008 - $21.99 and set 31005 for (17.99) with 50% = 8.95 for a total of $31 which didn't think was too bad for 2 sets I had yet to see or find anywhere else since they are 2013 sets.

I picked up two SW Republic Starfighters for the sale since it was 8% below msrp already. Good deal for me at 30% a piece after tax. Had to use in store pickup though, no complaints on that though since they were unavailable online.

TRU has SW Death Star, SSD, IS, R2D2, and Diagon Alley BOGO 50% right now!
  • gmpirategmpirate Member Posts: 1,654
Thanks for that! Lol, this is the first forum I check every morning when I wake up. Not sure if I should be proud of that or not :P
  • BrickarmorBrickarmor Member Posts: 1,258
That is awesome. What is NOT is that Hobbit is no longer eligible. I put my order in first thing when it was listed BOGO50 and if it gets nixed I'll be... a typical TRU customer. Gotta say, though, credit where credit is due for putting some of the big ticket items on sale.

It wouldn't let me add 2 to the cart.

You have to pair SSD with DS. :)

I just used the deal last night to get two small sets. I got a 3177 (small car) for my kid and got 30057 (anakins podracer) for me. I bought the podracer solely for the purpose of getting a black bar with stop ring. I used that to replace the flimsy antenna that is supposed to support the chandelier in the grand emporium. The sign in the store mentioned that the deal did not apply to avengers, ninjago, video games, or video game accessories.
