Rumours about Star Wars UCS models

I have to say as someone who has in the last year emerged from their "Dark Age" that I would love to see some updated UCS models. The X-wing could be argued either way, it was and still is a cracking model but could be improved after 12years. I put it to you all however that the UCS model most in need of improvement is 10026! 167 pieces on a UCS! I know their are some PT haters and especially EP1 haters, but honestly I don't think they've truly done the Naboo starfighter justice yet. However that may not be as high a priority as the other ships/vehicles I'd like to see given the UCS treatment. A-wing and AT-AT being the classic examples but I'd also like a Venator star destroyer, republic gunship and I think a C3-PO bust should also be done.

10026 is as bad as it appears to be from the pictures.

I bought one, used, just to say I have the whole collection, but it really is terrible in most respects.

10129 gets hated on a lot, but I personally like it... Most of them are actually quite good. 10215 is the other worst in my opinion (like 10026), but I can't tell you why.

Yes, we need all those sets, AT-AT, Sandcrawler, Luke's Landspeeder, etc. etc. etc. :)

10129 gets hated on over 10026 and 10215 for two reasons:
    A) Most AFOLs don't care about the PT.
    B) It's an awful, awful model that looks only vaguely like it's on-screen counterpart. It's the only UCS model that can legitimately claim to be worse than its System versions.

That said, I will reiterate, if we're going to get a re-do of a UCS set, it needs to be the snowspeeder, because 10129 is an abomination.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
^ You might have a typo there, you said 10129 twice.

As for 10129, I really don't get the hate, I think it looks really nice, I recently rewatched Empire with my son, I don't see the issues that everyone else sees. It isn't perfect, it isn't as good as the X-Wing, but it isn't THAT bad.

If I may borrow a page from your book... we'll have to agree to disagree on that one. :D

Yes, I think this thread should have been labeled as "a wish list for UCS 2013".

A Slave I would be my dream UCS set. It is probably my favourite Star Wars vehicle.

Yes that would be sweet! Jango's or Boba's?
  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
Boba's is far more iconic and well known
  • CapnRex101CapnRex101 Administrator Posts: 2,364
^^ Absolutely, Boba's, I must say however I prefer the Jango colours and think we need a new version of his Slave I in Minifigure scale in a few years time.
  • LegofanscottLegofanscott Member Posts: 622
Still think an AT AT and standard TIE fighter should be next, I also think they would sell much better than a slave 1 would

The only worry with an AT AT though is how Lego are going to make it sturdy enough on a realistic budget, it really should've been released at the same time as 10179 when parts seemed to be cheaper.

If they do pull it off though I reckon it could rival 10179 as the best Lego set ever made:).

Even if it was 500/600 quid I still don't think Lego would make a loss on it

What rumor? No one ever said anything about a rumor.

Edit - oh, from months ago, never mind...

I don't think Lego are in the business of making losses, as always the problem with big sets and high prices is limited sales potential, they're more likely to be selling to a smaller audience and while we're all clamouring for one the market research might be saying they're best chance for for profit is in the £150-200 price point with 1500-2000pcs, especially having seen that the SSD and Jedi Starfighter didn't do aswell as might have been predicted due to high price point or high price per part.

Personally I'd think it would be unlikely for TLG to release another large, expensive UCS set while they're still selling the SSD and I think we'll see more sets similar to the 2012 releases with 1500-2000pcs.

Obviously this is just my speculation and I hope to be proved wrong with a massive 5000pc AT-AT. Although now I consider it I'm not sure how enjoyable building 4 identical and colossal legs might be, by the third I think it might start feeling repetitive :-/
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
^ Good points... but regarding 4x build on the legs, you could get around that a bit by making the front and back legs, or the left and right side, slightly different.

Another option... have the legs in seperate bags so that you can team build. My son could build two of them and I could build two of them, that sort of thing. Put the head in another set of bags, so he could build that while I build the body.
  • CaptAPJTCaptAPJT Member Posts: 223
I think it'll partly depend on the design whether they have posable legs or if they'll be fixed and as such slightly different. Assuming it is just 4 identical legs I'll probably choose to build them all concurrently, the only risk with this technique is you miss one part on one, you miss it on all :-/
  • BumblepantsBumblepants Member Posts: 7,632
If I had the time and pieces I would MOC a giant Jar Jar scuplture head, photoshop it onto a SW Lego box and post it here to stir things up. But since i can't do that, I will just vote for a Slave 1 or an AT-AT
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
My 7 year old son would LOVE a Jar Jar scuplture...

Keep in mind, kids that watched Episode 1 are now at that age... The movie is now 13 years old, kids who watched it in the theater are now teenagers or young adults... They don't have the hate towards Jar Jar that we older AFOLs do. :)

I think a minifig scale UCS of AT-AT has more chance of being successful (from Lego's sales perspective) than any other huge set. No one is shocked at the £350/$400 pricepoint any more (except from a currency exchange rate perspective between UK/US pricing!), and minifig scale makes it compatible with all the system stuff already out there so if it's sturdy enough it could be a realistic play option for kids as well as being a display piece for AFOLs. It should be a bigger seller than a twice system scale sized Slave I/Tie etc that is larger than minifig scale selling for upwards of £160/$200.

UCS Cloud Car, A-Wing and Tie Bomber!
  • CapnRex101CapnRex101 Administrator Posts: 2,364
^^ I agree entirely, something like a Minifigure scale UCS AT-AT would be a great seller at a £350 price point. Include a few Snowtroopers, a couple of pilots and an exclusive AT-AT commander of some kind and there is your set. I would snap one up in minutes!
  • cavegodcavegod Member Posts: 811
^ not for those with an at-at
  • RedbullgivesuwindRedbullgivesuwind Member Posts: 2,115
@cavegod I've seen your models, surely you can just make your own :-D
  • monkeyhangermonkeyhanger Member Posts: 3,169
Snow troopers and pilots are something I have plenty of and if I was so sure TLG weren't going to make one in the next 3 years and I was creative enough to make one from scratch i'd MOC my own. My recent effort and spending has been on bricklinking the UCS MF, so i'm ready for another big build. Could TLG do a minifig scale AT-AT for less than £400 RRP (presumably with no more than 4000 parts for the current price per part).? Perhaps they could with a few new parts that may allow 1 piece to replace 5 or 6 in a few places seen on current/recent MOCs.

How often do you think TLG decide on what UCS to make all on their own rather than looking at posted MOCs or seeing what the fanbase demand would be by keeping an eye on the forums? There were a few tidy SSD MOCs out there about a year before TLG brought out their own UCS SSD.

The AT-AT has to be a winner as it's the main star of many OT fans favourite battle in their favourite SW film.

Regarding 10221, putting that bridge in the model was an extremely bad idea, Lego knows that most people buying these huge sets are adults so why did they do it? They could've used all those extra pieces they used for the bridge on extra detail to the model, and although it may look pretty accurate, compared to some of the other fan made SSD's and pictures of the real thing it is completely inaccurate, and for 350 quid I expect an amazingly accurate model, and I expect many others do aswell, and for that reason im not interested in owning it, if 10221 isn't a big seller which it looks like it isn't then IMO its lego's own fault.

@Cavegod - Even those who already have one would want another, larger and more definitive version, I think. Such is the popularity of the vehicle.
  • monkeyhangermonkeyhanger Member Posts: 3,169
^ I'd put my motorised AT-AT up on ebay in an instant to help fund a minifig scale UCS version. At minifig scale it would seamlessly integrate with the rest of my Hoth stuff and I would display it with that rather than as a standalone model. I'm sure plenty of others would do the same, making it a dual purpose model - standalone UCS model or an enhancement to the system Hoth stuff. The AT-AT IMO is the most definitive SW vehicle out there still waiting for a UCS version and that hasn't been done justice yet as a system vehicle, mainly due to it's true size (8097 is a very good representation of Slave I and not far off true minifig scale, 9494 Tie looks great too). £350/400 for something not too far off Cavegod's model looks far better value than the SSD which is impressive in length only IMO (although i'd still have it for something in the region of £200 *hoping for a great sale*).

I can't see Lego releasing one i'd want, there's not been an atat yet to tempt me.

@ Cavegod - Well of course there has not been one to tempt you because you have got a pretty definitive version already! :)
  • LegofanscottLegofanscott Member Posts: 622
A UCS AT AT doesn't need to be as big as cavegods, as long as its very accurately proportioned and has lots of detail it'll still look brilliant I think.

  • cavegodcavegod Member Posts: 811
If only I could get the idea of building one twice as big as the one I have now out of my head I would be fine!

Anyway I'll say it again for those that wern't listening.

    UCS C3-P0 ;-) ;-)

Instant win! But it would need to be really big (and expensive) to go along with his companion in scale. Laying down the gauntlet for a MOC here...

  • BumblepantsBumblepants Member Posts: 7,632
Is it feasible to make as many gold colored bricks as C3P0 would require in one set? Would be tough to make it look good but awesome if done right
  • y2joshy2josh Member Posts: 1,996
Personally, I think a UCS MSE-6 at a 1:1 scale would thrill everybody.

I badly want a UCS Venator, but I think that the current generation (clone wars gen) will need to get a little older to increase the market demand.

That's my concern and personally I think a Bust (Head only) would be the way forward for a 3PO. Maybe you could incorporate illuminating eyes that just 'pop in' like Anakin does in Phantom.

It was in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith also, so it has a chance. I'm in love with the Venator myself and hope it does it make it into UCS form one day.

You have to be careful how you define "white". The moment you put some black in it, it's not white anymore. The X-wings from the films are a very light gray, but they are gray, not pristine appliance snow white. Lego white is WHITE and that's why it is the wrong color (in my opinion) for something like an X-wing. I should point out that medium bluish gray is not correct either...but I have said for a long time that Lego needs to come out with more gray tones including at least one that is lighter than medium bluish gray (what most Lego fans call "ligtht gray").

When you're talking about black and white it sounds like you're talking about paint. And then you're talking about what it looks like on film. All of this is silly because the color you see is a result of the lighting along with the paint, and for a film also exposure. Something painted gray can look white on film if it's overexposed and something white can look dark if underexposed. White can look gray if weathered and gain shades of color with lighting. So really what matters is what color the x-wings are supposed to be in the story. The designers who put together the models and the cinematographers are following some sort of artistic vision, which is what matters. Thus x-wings are white:

"We'll take the X-wing as an example. This ship is supposed to be white with color markings on the fuselage, engine cowls and wings. If it were brand new, all of this would be bright and probably shiny. But, in the Star Wars world, especially the Rebel sections, these ships are old and well worn and the paint has suffered. That's what they want you to see on screen."

Can someone please tell me what MOC stands for, and also add it to the abbreviations thread, as I couldn't find it there.

Also, can someone please tell me what god of lego design built this, and why we aren't building it ourselves???...

As I would an AT AT... (along with just about any other UCS Star Wars set they'll release) ; )

I know 3PO has been mentioned a couple of times but I just got thinking how cool something like Darth Vaders or a Stormtrooper helmet could be. I'm not sure with this idea whether I'd like to see a full size or perhaps a 50% or 75% scale would be more manageable.

@CaptAPJT you may want to check these out just in case Lego don't ever make any.
