    I am curious to hear peoples' thoughts on this. What are the top 3 sets still widely available that are going to be jackpots later? Big or small is just fine. Here are my 3.

    1. 6857 - The Dynamic Duo Funhouse Escape - Look at the mini figures in this set! Every one of them is awesome, and highly sought after and collectible! Once this goes EOL, I don't think you could have enough of these in your collection. The Exclusive status doesn't hurt either.

    2. 6860 - The Batcave - Not unlike 6857, this has amazing mini figures. Bruce Wayne is a little lame, but Bane and Poison Ivy are great! The Batcave looks awesome, and was a fun build. Who doesn't want one of these? This will be a gold mine later.

    3. 6862 - Superman vs. Power Armor Lex - Not as large scale as the above mentioned sets, but this one is great. Getting Superman and Wonder Woman together in one convenient package is tough to beat! Lex and the robot aren't too shabby either! I have built the robot 4 or 5 times and still find it very enjoyable.

    So what do you guys think? I realize this list is a bit Super Hero-centric, but that is what I am into most right now. There are definitely other greats though. Vampyre Castle nearly made this list.

    I know the thread you are referring to. I have read it. However, that thread has gotten very broad. I am simply asking for peoples' top threes, not advice on investing and selling LEGOs.

    Any thoughts on #7930 ? I got an opportunity to grab a few for $24.50 at Kmart and decided to pass. The box felt so light (and empty) for a supposedly $50 rrp set and I was not familiar with the minifigs that came with it.

    BTW, while it is true that those three sets "should" be hits, the fact that we all know this will temper that somewhat.

    The flying monkeys must have broken into LEGO's warehouse and made off with the rest of the 40032 witch polybags. It's a goner from [email protected] and a lot of the brand stores.

    £77 for Diagon Alley? thats incredible, hope you bought 100? ;-) I think this set will move to the £230 mark just prior to christmas. So sell half now and half later or feel free to sell to me for £110 cash job ;-)

    dougts...I didnt mean to sound rude. I understand where you were coming from. There are similarities to the thread you mentioned. I just intended for this to be more specific than that one. Anyway, just wanted to clear the air. Didn't mean any disrespect.

    @prevere - I grabbed a single #40032 when I was at the B&M store this past weekend (they had a few left). To be honest, I'm not sure why I did because I'm not really a fan of the set. I figure if it goes up I might be able to trade it for another polybag I am interested in...

    ^ no worries. I also wasn't trying to rain on your parade - just wanted to steer you to the on-topic thread. I have found that the mods here run a much tighter ship than most other boards I frequent. They really like to keep threads consolidated as much as possible, and do a lot of merging. In the end, it's one of the little things that makes this site so approachable and easy to wade through. I still think this should and will get merged with that one, but I guess we'll see what happens.

    As to those three sets (and you kind of touched on this in your assessment), their resale value is going to be linked directly to the scarcity of the minifigs. Of the sets you mentioned, the only one that is a cool set in and of itself is Lex's robot. The Batcave and the funhouse are pretty generic, and should only rise significantly if the minifigs stay exclusive to those sets.

    ^ Not sure I agree with you on the Batcave. I think the Batcave is pretty iconic and that this contributes to its popularity or coolness factor.

    ^ Yes, but keep in mind the Batcave has spent a lot of time on sale, I've bought a few copies for $50 shipped, which is a pretty decent discount on a $70 set.

    That is going to hold the price down for awhile. You also don't know how long it will be out. Could be just 1 year, could be 3 years.

    I would agree that the Batcave is iconic. Plus, it's a fun build. The Dynamic Duo Funhouse Escape is also a blast to build thanks to its wackiness, and the play features, especially the roller-coaster-style escape, are definitely fun.

    I actually don't get the coolness of Lex's robot other than the minifigs, though...

    @LegoFanTexas I wasn't commenting on resale value, just coolness factor.

    I own #7783 and I just looked up the prices on Bricklink. Is it just me, or has the price of this set actually gone up in the past few months? I would have thought since #6860 was out it would have made the previous model cheaper.

    It's not that Lex's robot is cool, per se. It's just something different. The DC sets (and a lot of the Marvel sets, honestly) are all very generic to me, which is why I think the resale value will be intrinsically linked to the minifigs. Take away the minifigs, and none of these sets would even be 'on the radar,' so to speak. Truthfully, that's the way I feel about a lot of the sets these days. Superheroes, PotC and LotR are all pretty boring sets with some really amazing minifigs. And I do love the minifigs, but LEGO is supposed to be about building, so I wish there'd be a better union of the two.

    Tower Bridge was an impressive build, and not a minifig in sight.

    It is now retired, but 6753, Highway Transporter, was also a fun build if you want a vehicle rather than a building.

    They were via amazon.de a couple of months ago - amazon themselves were the seller so that was little risk, only drawback was the advertised delivery time of apprx 8 weeks which put some people off (I posted it on the
    .de thread) but once ordered they shipped within a week.

    (most) themes sets are about the minifig and the re-sell value will be determined mostly by the exclusive minifigs and how popular the character is.
    and
    (most) non-license set are about the actual set itself.

    So is this about resale value or not? I find the superheroes sets pretty boring from an aesthetic and build point of view compared to other non-licensed sets of similar cost, since they are all about the minifigs. The coolness is down to the minifigs.

    Pet Shop and Town Hall are back to RRP, but Fire Brigade has not been restocked and is about 15% over RRP.

    In the Superhero line? Not really any of them, though the Quinjet, the S.H.I.E.L.D. jeep and the helicopter all feature some nice, rare colors, so that may help them in the long run as well.

    @Farmer_john - I grabbed one as well early Sept and we built it. Cute for the kids. Lego has stepped up their holiday offering past year or so.

    I would like to get some of their plastic bubble ornaments with the gold bricks inside. Those seem to pop up on [email protected] randomly, then sell out lightning quick.

    As the poster of this discussion, it is fun to see how the topic evolves after even a few days. I agree with a lot of what has been said. I have even had a few realizations. It never occurred to me that with the Super Heroes sets, I was mostly just enamored with the mini figs. I still think some of the buildables in it were fun, but definitely not as worthwhile as some of the other sets out there.

    So to change in the direction of what has great mini figs vs. what is a great build?

    The collest modern sets I have built recently were the Black Pearl, and the Vampyre Castle. They were both 2 or 3 day projects, and I savored every moment. :)

    What are other modern sets that are great builds?

    It depends how you define great build! A small one - I enjoyed building the plane from #9467 The Ghost Train. Similar to one in PQ, but with some fun additions to it.

    Fair enough... when I say "a great build", I guess I mean something like this...

    When you put the elements together, you marvel at the engineering of it... or how much detail was packed into a tiny area... or even the smile factor. How much fun was it? Some building projects are simply boring or uninspiring.

    When I built the Black Pearl, I was smiling the whole time while watching it come together. The removable top piece to show the inside of the captain's quarters was terrific!

    Lord Vampyre's pipe organ (9468) was just this tiny little thing, but it was made out of something like 32 pieces or something. (Not an exact number, I just remember it being a lot of pieces for something so small.)

    Stuff like that...

    At the moment - the lighthouse, if it can be found on offer. In the UK the fire temple - an amazing build that can even now be picked up for £60 delivered.

    The UCS Falcon was the best build I have had in a while -- probably ever.

    Helm's Deep was a great build. A fair amount of variety and ends up as a pretty impressive display. Worthwhile given the price -- particularly as it is regularly available on sale. Jabba's Palace, by contrast, was a disappointment, even when acquired on sale for a similar price.

    The Town Hall modular may not look great from the outside, but the inside detail makes it a very interesting build. I enjoyed that one quite a bit. Fire Brigade was also a great build.

    ^ Jabba's Palace is missing about 500 parts compared to Helm's Deep, both can be had for about $100 per set, but the different in part count is hard to miss.

    A comment on the new vs. old Batman sets. Seems like the old Batman sets have held their value pretty well in the aftermarket, considering the 2.0 versions released a year ago. I think many of us were split on this when the new series launched.

    I argue the first series were better designed with more parts (on those that we re-done - batwing, batcave, etc). The new Tumbler will likely be similar to the newer set designs.

    In the end, they all seemingly go up in value. 10 years from now - we could have 4 generations of Batcaves, or maybe not. With the current one selling for $250...or $75...

    On the expensive end of current sets, I really liked UCS R2-D2. I enjoyed the functional aspects of the build and the finished product is amazing as a stand-alone piece.

    But best one in the past months has been the recently EOL Republic Dropship/AT-OT. Kind of a cheat though, since it's technically two vehicles put in one so the build-variety factor is off the charts. Kind of like the Petshop of big SW sets.

    @cheshirecat ^^ I enjoyed the Lighthouse too. I don't know about specific bricks, but I think I read that it has some unique pieces. The curved ones that make the tower. I think it has a lot going for it. And, I think it will do great after EOL.

    10195 - Republic Dropship - Indeed this one was missed by almost everyone, which is why it doubled in price the day it EOLed (or within a month or so).

    I just sold my last few copies for a net price of $400 each last month, not bad considering I paid a net price of $175 each 10 months ago. More than double in less than a year, I'll take it! :)

    ^ yup, I was strapped for cash when the RD EOL'd. I had to just sit by and watch them sell out. Trying to save up better this time and ignore the current sales as best that I can. :-) Sure, I have tons 'o will power! :-)

    I wasn't that serious about this when RD EOLed, so there were 4 on the shelf and I only bought 2 of them at the time. What was I thinking? :)

    I did later go back and get more, and a few were returned to the store, so I ended up with 6 of them finally, which felt like a lot at the time, but turned out to be pretty minor in the end.

    Sorry to hear it wasn't your typical 50 copies in inventory. All we need is to use a time machine one time! OK, make that twice. Once to jump back, once to return. :-)
