    The Brickset reviews are here
    http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=10228-1

Eurobricks is a another great site for indepth reviews (if you like that sort of thing). The Eurobricks review is fantastic, as is the set. But the general agreement seems to be that it is over-priced in comparison to other similar sized sets.

On a side note, this also makes for interesting background 'looking'. A now Lego designers interview portfolio with his idea for a 'monsters' theme. You can see the idea for a haunted house.

I really love the HH. It has over 2000 parts (on par with the Modular buildings) My daughter loves it because it opens up like a dollhouse. It has lots of great parts (sand green, the new bricks both in tan and bley) The minifigures are great!!! If you don't want to build a Haunted House you can build a clean Victorian Home with a finished interior. You can also go a completely different route and build a Modular building to go with your layout. I don't understand why people dislike this set????

I just popped to my local LEGO store and saw it in the flesh. It is impressive in person and far more than the vampire castle that was next to it (although that looked like it may have more play options). Still 50% too expensive to me though.

i saw it next to the haunted house too on sunday .. popped into the stratford store on the way to the olympic closing ceremony .. namedrop namedrop ... and got in trouble with the wife for almost missing the start because i was looking at lego .. anyway ...

Not that impressive in the flesh, and agree about the vampire castle, I realise that the castle is more of a frontage rather than a building, but still I held off buying the HH and am now wondering if I should get the castle instead.

And before anyone says it, I'd love to get them both, but I need to make some room to put them in first! (getting there slowly)

My daughter an I built it together, and we both like it. She enjoys plaing with it with the house open, and in October I'll display it on my desk. We also have been adding other stuff to go with it though, like a cemetary, skeletons, other monsters, etc. I think the set is worth the money.

I had a great time building this over the weekend with my GF. She is completely taken by the set and monsters, almost equal to her passion with the Winter Village series. The HH is a great holiday set in my opinion. Her main gripe with it is the choice of sand green. She thought it would look better in purple or even dark orange.

But for me, compared to the proper Modulars, it lacks special building techniques and was more straightforward of a build. Best part was building the furniture and accessories, which are the first steps.
  • cheshirecatcheshirecat Member Posts: 5,331
^ when I saw it today I did think the colour scheme wasn't very scary. The holiday set is part of the problem for me, the winter sets are out for 4 maybe 6 weeks which is fine, I'll be lucky to get a week out of the HH. £150 id just too much for that. The set looks ok and I would say weighty, piece count is ok value, but it's too much money for what I would use it for. The context of the set for me doesnt match the price.

There were a few out on the shelves at my local store today and 'lots' out the back apparently. I suspect in the UK and Europe this one will be mostly for the Lego nuts.

The cool part for Lego is that with a holiday theme they can bring this set back for several more years. Buying them for hoarding purposes will be less likely.

By the way it was worth the money and it is a great looking set and very fun to build even if it isn't quite like the other modular buildings.

It's a great set. I would have liked it much more if it was built in tune with the modulars instead of splitting open. Nonetheless if this set was one short run from here to Halloween, I feel like this set would be one of the most sought after.

Ooh, love the Frankenstein and Medusa. Hope we see those in future.

Frankenstein is just about done in CMF and the zombie butler. I like the Igor figure.

I find it amazing just how many of that guys designs have made it. He sketched so many cool figures, and a large portion of them are now in existence.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
We need a "Jason" type figure. Some guy in a "goalie" mask with a black jump suit or overalls. Use the axe from the Lumberjack and create a Goalie Hockey Player to go along with the current Hockey Player and use the goalie mask for the "Axe Murderer".
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
Dracula is cool, but we NEED an original Nosferatu. I'd also like a "Jack the Ripper" minifigure as well.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
Where's the classic guy in devil costume? Oh, and by the way...

    Someone's in my fruit cellar

Yes, the 1x1's are a lighter shade of Sand Green than the other pieces in my set.

^^ I love how that series of movies shows up in quotes on here sometimes (and now in pics too). Yay for Bruce Campbell! If they get a Western series going, maybe I'll MOC me some Brisco County Jr.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
Evil Dead 2 and Armies of Darkness are my favorite Horror movies of All Time. I quote them often.

For those Frankenstein needers out there, don't forget this set, #9466 - The Crazy Scientist and His Monster, has Frankenstein in it. Both the doc and the monster,
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
^ As does CMF series 4.
  • MandarineMandarine Member Posts: 31
I have bought both the Haunted House and the Castle. Frankly, seeing the reviews of the Castle, it just seemed too good to pass up. I haven't received my Haunted House yet, but this theme is so well-executed and so detailed, that I figure my kids can play with the Castle and I can enjoy the Haunted House. This theme is pure joy, for me, on all aspects.
  • LegoboyLegoboy Member Posts: 8,827
Monster Fighters, for me is the best theme that's been around whilst I've been interested in LEGO - 4 years or so. It's just so imaginative and fun.
  • DavidBrickleyDavidBrickley Member Posts: 369
We added the Grim Reaper to ours using a Dark Rider from the Weathertop set, swapping the black head for a skull and adding a scythe.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
I was going to mention the Grim Reaper, but that was exactly what I was thinking. It would be easy to make your own.

It has a timeless aspect to it, with the all the variety of "monster" lore and interpretations seen in pop culture over the years. There's even references to old-time classic cars - I think one set, it may be the crazy scientist one - has a stylised representation of an old Citroen 2 chevaux (2 horse). A classic old French car, that is iconic today and a bit of an affectionate joke in French culture...

I also like the monsters side of the line. They have now done most of the classic horror film main characters. Although as noted earlier, I'd love an Igor. They could also do an invisible man quite easily with bandaged head plus sunglasses. Although an S5 gangster suit and hat plus trans-clear head works quite well too.
  • LegoboyLegoboy Member Posts: 8,827
^ You mean you didn't get an invisible man in your HH? I did in mine! :o)
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526

^ Boom boom. Or just use a plain yellow minifig for son of the invisible man as featured in Amazon Women on the Moon.

^^^ I know, and I know which is cheaper and easier to get hold of!
  • andheandhe Member Posts: 3,940
I'd also like a bride of Frankenstein type figure, but think the iconic image (Marge Simpson hair with the white streak) is owned by whatever studio. I'd hazard a guess that the invisible man might be as well. A Jekyll and Hyde type laboratory would be fun though.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
Maybe, but I doubt it. Maybe Marge's Hair specifically. What about Phantom of the Opera?
  • DeadareusDeadareus Member Posts: 264
Can't wait to get the Mansion but will have to wait until next year as there are too many other items I have to grab before they EOL (GE, PS, DS).

We DID however just build the Swamp Creature and I really enjoyed it as did the little guy. Immediately upon finishing he looked up at me and said "Well, I guess we just started collecting another kind of lego Dad". He's 4. Smart kid!

All this nostalgic talk of this theme has me regretting returning #9462 and #9463, I picked them up to get the Zombie Car but then later returned them for the Desert Skiff and some store credit...

Maybe that's where the Flying Dutchman went from (PotC)...It could always be re-purposed for a Ghost ship for Monster Fighters.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
^They are planning on 2 more movies. Depp already signed up for at least 1. If Lego still has the Disney license then we will probably see the Flying Dutchman.

^ OMG that's fantastic they are planning 2 more films!! I really do hope we get the Duchman, I want that as a set soooo bad.

@yys4u I don't blame you to the honest. I really like the Monster Fighters theme but I regretted buying the Mummy chariot. What is going on with that helicopter?! The Werewolf set is cool but for me it's not as exciting as others in the range.

I find the mummy set a bit lame. The mummy has been in CMF (and not too dissimilar in PQ) and is cheap enough to get a small army anyway. The rest of the set is nto worth having (for me). At least the werewolfs head is something new, although I prefer the normally head one with hairpiece, again from CMF.
  • MandarineMandarine Member Posts: 31
Agree that the Mummy set is a bit lame, but my son loves the skeleton horse...
  • yys4uyys4u Member Posts: 1,093
^That was my whole incentive for getting the set, I never got one of those horses with the Castle Fantasy Era stuff, and thought the horse is neat, especially with the glow in the dark aspect, but the rest of the set looks really bad IMO.

    @flump and @pitfall69
Returned it tonight. Exchanged it for the Ghost Train, a PAB cup and a ManBat CMF.
Still have a hefty amount left on the gift card I received. I feel better.
At least they let me keep the orange brick separator from it. Ah, the memories.
  • MorkManMorkMan Member Posts: 916
@beets665 I took mine back tonight. Got all the way through the "4" bags and stopped. It was a good build, but seriously for the money, I believed it should've been bigger. Taller. More massive. If they had taken some of the insides out of it and only made a HH shell and shaved $100 off the price, it would be a great set. For the price, though it just doesn't compare. It's just another house. A scary one with nice windows and a great roofline, but not IMHO a $180 value.
You can read more about my saga over on bricksetforum.com/discussion/5402/haunted-house-price-change.

As a side note, I did pick up the Ghost Train ($80) tonight instead. A better value for the two items (the train and the plane) that are included. The train does offer itself as a good Halloween them item, as a tabletop centerpiece. Especially with the glow-in-the-dark ghosts and other pieces. I'm looking forward to it.

^ I would be interested to know if you have built any of the modular buildings, and how you think they compare to HH...

Pet Shop is closest in part count to HH, for $30 more money... Thoughts?
  • bsiu922bsiu922 Member Posts: 439
I haven't built my haunted house yet, but I built all six but one of the modular buildings (Cafe Corner). I would definitely buy it for 150. Need some thinking for 180+tax. But I think it would have more "fun" element compare to the modular buildings.
