^ 6212 should never do much, given that the newer X-Wing is such a better set. 6212 was out for 5 years, "limited edition" indeed! :)

4841 and 8129 are the two really good sets that he has, those two have already gone up to about double RRP.
  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
10215 may eventually make money, but it was on sale for 40% off for EVER. You might have to hold it a long time before it eclipses RRP or beyond

6212 seems doubtful. the new one is a major upgrade and will be on the shelf for quite some time.

4841 is probably already worth quite a bit more than RRP. good prospects here

I can't say much on the other off-hand, but I suspect endor and at-at might be worthwhile, but don't count much on 8096
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
Endor should do well. Lots of minifigures and a nice version of the AT-ST.

Toys R Us has the Death Star for $349.99 and free shipping.
  • Penkid11Penkid11 Member Posts: 788
^Man I hope that thing is available on Black Friday!
  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
TRU also has a 30% off star wars sets*

    (* select items only).

as of yet, I cannot get the promo code to work on any SW set I've tried.
  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
ok,figured it out. they marked almost all SW sets down 10% (leaving most of them still over RRP, other than the big UCS ones). then the 30% codes only work on those sets still at TRU retail, which are:

    HEB
    Y-wing
    Geo Cannon
    clone/droid BP
  • BrickarmorBrickarmor Member Posts: 1,258
Yep, in defiance of my common sense I tried to get 10212 for $233 plus the 30% off code. Tried... and failed. Predictably.

What the heck were you thinking???
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
Ok. Just finished building the Haunted House.I really think that this is a future winner. BUT!!! I don't think that you should bank on using the Sand Green parts to use for completing Green Grocer or Statue of Liberty. The Sand Green that came with HH is a shade darker than previous sand green. Also the part is different.

    Sorry about the photo quality.

As you can see the 1x6 is different.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
I posted this here because there was talk of using the Sand Green parts for other sets and because of this, the value of the HH May go up.
  • FatMattFatMatt Member Posts: 502
^Not to be contrary, but I am not sure it will make that much of a difference. I have received sets that have included the "same" gray color pieces in slightly different shades within the same set. Dark gray mostly. In the right lighting, non-fluorescent, you probably wouldn't even notice the difference.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
^ I would agree, the differences in those pictures is not enough to get concerned about. Perhaps they are more different in person, but I don't see it in the pics.

I have no doubt that factory new sets have similar differences from time to time, as parts get changed over, some probably get mixed at some point.

If the finished model looks right, I highly doubt most people would know or care. :)
  • prevereprevere Member Posts: 2,923
HH will have great value long-term regardless of sand green parts useability. Unless discounted, the $180 price tag will keep the hoarding to a minimum. The accessibility is tougher not being a retail set (yet, at least). It's a modular. And the first of its kind, so to speak.

    5 years after EOL...$800.
  • y2joshy2josh Member Posts: 1,996
^Is the Haunted House actually a modular? We're waiting 'til closer to Halloween to build ours, but nothing on the box art or the promotional shots suggests it is. Just curious to hear from someone who's built it.
  • y2joshy2josh Member Posts: 1,996
Ran out of time to edit, but I'd add that, just by looking at the build, I don't see any way it could be.
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
^ I'm not sure why it keeps getting referred to as a modular. It isn't in the same specs or style and is in fact just a part of the Monster Fighters line so it doesn't really fit the modular description.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454

It's not a Modular. I built a wall with a combination of old Sand Green and New Sand Green and my wife definitely noticed a difference. It's nit just the color, but the part is different as well. All new parts have those "white" marks on the top of the studs. I guess I'm being picky.
  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
it's not designed or intended to fit in with the modular street lineup. It's around the same price point and piece counts, and it's sold Direct only. The similarities really end there.

The point @prevere was likely trying to make is that it is aiming for the same general audience as the modulars, and is likely to be desirable long after EOL. Many of the things that make the modulars (historically) go up in value over the long haul would also apply here - particularly if LEGO begins introducing a yearly halloween-style set.
  • mathewmathew Member Posts: 2,099
The Haunted House is like Kingdoms Joust. Both are 102x sets. Both are aimed at older teens, adults and collectors. You could argue that "Modular" is too broad of a term since most recent larger sets utilize a modular style of building. In my opinion the Haunted House is the direction the Modulars should go in. Stacking buildings side by side limits the possibility of a more complete looking model.
  • y2joshy2josh Member Posts: 1,996
Okay... but the modulars aren't modulars because they connect side by side. They're modulars because they're comprised of modules.

Regardless, it seems the answer to my question is still 'no.'
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
HH isn't a "modular", in the sense that it isn't the same style as the current lineup, but actually I think it really is. Instead of having each floor come off, it open and splits halfway. Same concept, different execution.

If you don't want to call it a modular, that is ok. But it does appear to me to be the same level of detail, building complexity, part count, and price, as the modular line.

The box also looks and feels like a modular box, the material the box is made out of is not the same as the cheaper sets, it has that soft thick cardboard feeling, and it is exactly the same size as the FB, GE, and PS boxes.

^This is all well and good, but none of that makes it a modular in any sense of the word. My interest was purely in whether it was comprised of easy-to-store-without-disassembling modules, which it sounds (and looks) like it isn't.

I was mostly trying to ascertain whether or not this was something that would need to be rebuilt every Halloween or not.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
    ^ Ahh, I see what you're saying...

In that case, you would be correct, it isn't separate floors that can be stacked.

But... wouldn't putting it together every year be part of the fun?
  • y2joshy2josh Member Posts: 1,996
^I'm not as big into Halloween as my girlfriend is, so she may get a good kick out of rebuilding it every year, but for me it's more a 'one and done' type model. On the other hand, I rebuild all the Winter Village sets each year, so this won't kill me. I was just hoping it might store nicely.
  • mathewmathew Member Posts: 2,099
So in other words you're saying a modular is a modular because it stacks? I doubt that is how Lego defines it. I kind of doubt most people store their modulars by sticking them in drawers... but maybe they do. I think the initial idea of the modulars was to have a large scale "dollhouse" that was easily accessible by removing the floors. It also allows upward expandability compared to a side opening style. Maybe I'm wrong and someone who works at Lego can chime in. Point is that the term modular is generic and can be applied to most Lego sets nowadays that comprise of separate builds.
  • y2joshy2josh Member Posts: 1,996

^No. I'm saying a modular is a modular by virtue of consisting of modules. And I don't store my modulars. I would, however, store a model that I didn't intend to display all year.

In any regard, whatever the initial idea of the modulars was, they are actually modulars. The Haunted House, from what's being described here, certainly is not.

And not to split hairs, but the term 'modular' is not generic and it can be applied to only seven LEGO models that I know of, though I may certainly be off on that number. I definitely agree that the term is very frequently misused to describe several different sets, though this is the first case I can recall where there would actually be confusion on whether or not the model in question was actually a modular or not.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
^I have an architecture, mechanical and structural engineering background. Of course this doesn't make me an expert Lego designer, but I have to agree that the Modular Buildings are indeed called Modulars because each building is made up of "modules" (floors). The Haunted House is not made up of modules and opens like the buildings in MMV and Blacksmith House and most of the shops and buildings that are built in the CCC standard. You can't place Haunted House along side the other Modular Buildings because of the side entrance and the "hinge" bricks within the chimney.
  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110

I'd actually argue the opposite. The term "modular" is meant to denote a style of building technique, whereby one builds the set in independent modules, which then easily connect and disconnect from each other. this is indeed a generic term.

The term has since become a widely (mis)used shorthand to mean exclusively the once a year collection of city buildings that all connect together, called by LEGO the "modular building series", Partly a shortening of the name, probably enhanced by the lack of an catchy, more easily accessible name. Obviously, these are also the best examples of the modular technique.

It is crystal clear that HH does not belong to the "modular building series", so in that sense you can definitely say it's not a "modular" if you are using the shorthand definition of that term. However, in it's level of detail, piece counts, price point, target audience, etc., it is very much in line with the modular building series, so it wouldn't be completely inaccurate to call it a "modular" in a broader sense of the word, as a way of comparison

In the end, I think we can mostly all agree it should be well sought after for many of the same exact reasons the modular building series sets are, and for a few more reasons as well.

Is it really that important to label the Haunted House as a modular building or not? All that matters is that it is a really well built set, that has a lot of appeal, happens to have a holiday theme, and will most likely do very well in the aftermarket. Not sure why this has sparked such a big discussion.

Lol. That was my original sentiment. "A future winner". I'm not sure either why this has been discussed in great detail. I just built the set and it is a beautiful set with a ton of details. My 2 7/8 old daughter loves it and loves the fact you can open it up like a dollhouse.

You can certainly design and build it "modular" style. Also, you don't have to build it as a Haunted House. I'm thinking of building a cleaner version in the future.
  • stevenzhangstevenzhang Member Posts: 519
Is there anyone tried to convert the HH into a proper modular which can be lifted floor by floor instead of open sideways like a doll house? It seems like a pretty simple conversion :)

Of course we don't know for sure, but there hasn't been a recent S@H sale on it and I can't imagine its a high volume seller so maybe their current stocks are running low and then thats it.
Hope so, as l have some stashed and EOL now could push up Xmas prices nicely, though Tesco also carry it at rrp.....

  • prevereprevere Member Posts: 2,923
I was indeed speaking in general terms with HH as a modular. I didn't realize there were specific definitions with that word in particular to the series. Having built the HH, I just think it's a great house. Personally, I would put it on the same layout as a GG or CC.

My 7-year-old daughter loves it - especially noting the "dollhouse" effect and useability.

^Matching the TRU sale, I imagine. Same deal applies to the SSD.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
^Yes and the SSD as well, but it's only a 10% discount. I got the Super Star Destroyer for 20% during the May promotion. I did get the Death Star when it was double VIP points. I just think if I am going to buy more of either set, I'll hold out for a better deal.

I am still perplexed as to why the Kingdoms Chess Set has been wiped from the US shop@home site???? Usually, if something was SOLD OUT, it would still be on the site. Maybe there were some legal problems or red tape that Lego dealing with the set.

Or maybe it was just too cheap!

Tempting. Very tempting. Just not sure I can justify tying up that kind of money.

Has the Death Star ever gone lower than 10% off (say on Amazon for a Goldbox deal)? I have "my" copy so this is all about resale -- wondering whether a better opportunity might come along pre-Christmas.

I'm going to throw in my two cents about the Haunted House. I just finished building it. Yes, it is just as big as most of the Modular type buildings, but this is Not a modular set. You can't removed or rearrange the floors, like some of the modulars. It doesn't connect to the other building. It doesn't have any flat sides, the back is mostly flat, but it also has windows that stick out..

But the Haunted House...is a LEGO Dollhouse. It opens like one, it has furniture elements, just like one. It's a Halloween dollhouse made out of LEGO. It's a fantastic piece. This is a set that I think would pull a lot of people out of their dark ages. If they were to see it in person. Like most LEGO sets they always look more impressive in person. Seeing how tall this set is. It is impressive. They can't even fit it all on the front of the box. Go ahead check.

My impressions, I love this set...It will be a classic. It appeals to people on these notes. Halloween theme (Seasonal), just classic haunted house, part of the Monster Fighters line, also a great piece for a town layout.. Addam's Family & The Munsters Fans. Gothic style architectural building, dollhouse style play. It really does have some good appeal.

^^ 10188 has been as low as $340 on amazon before. And if you've gotten them at TRU bogos, $300 each.
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Member Posts: 10,836

The lowest I have seen a Death Star for I think was a BOGO for TRU. But seeing as how BOGOs have been insanely rare this year for TRU and it really is rolling the dice to find SW sets on sale for a BOGO or a buy 2 get the 3rd free sale, this may be the best chance at getting one under retail.
  • FatMattFatMatt Member Posts: 502
As most of you know, Amazon now has a limit of 2 for most of the larger sets. How long do you have to wait before you can order another two. Example: If I ordered two of a certain set today, could I order two more of that same set tomorrow?
