[Master thread] Help identifying parts, sets and minifigs

I hope you don't mind me usurping your discussion, but I'm changing this to a master thread for anyone seeking assistance in identifying parts and the sets to which they belong.

By containing all such inquiries to this thread, those that enjoy identifying parts know to come here to lend their expertise.

The rules should be pretty straightforward:
1) Please upload a photo of the part/parts.
2) Please take the time to downsize your image to keep this thread from bloating in size
3) Provided you downsize the image, after attaching the photo, click the "Insert image" button to display the photo in your post to spare people from having to download the photos in order to view them.

Hi,
Just recently made a purchase of a huge box of LEGO however it came without any instructions or boxes so it is proving tricky to ID what is in it.
It clearly has some HP sets as Hagrid, Harry, 3 headed dog, Basalisk etc is there, and I have found quite a lot of purple pieces which I can only assume are from the Knight Bus, but I am struggling with some other parts, there is a big white peice which looks like some kind of Arabian building, one peice which looks like batmans wings, but quite large so maybe from a vehicle, etc
Is there a way of tracking what sets the piece is in by the piece number? Or some other system?

Appreciate your help.

Yes, use Bricklink. Find the set you think the piece belongs to and then view its inventory. Conversely, look at the piece to see if it has the Design ID on it and use BL to find out what set it appears in.

As Martin says, it's normally fairly easy to find parts in bricklink, especially if you have the part's Design ID.

Otherwise, if you can work out the size, you can search for that, ie. 8x12x10, which may be the white roof piece you're looking for.
If that's the right piece, it was in the Scorpion Palace, set number 7418.
The wing could be from the large Batmobile, set 7784.

Definitely Bricklink. I just sorted through 15kg haul with no instructions or boxes and found 55 sets. And put the missing pieces into Bricklink as you find they're missing - then you can complete the sets afterwards. Went from 8 large swollen zip locks to 1/2 a one in the end. Was very enjoyable!

Yeah, but MAN it can be difficult.. The best method is to just find any parts with stickers or printed parts first, then 'special' parts (like tow hooks, winches, trees, etc.).
When sorting I usually put the half built vehicles and the 'special' parts/ decorated parts into their own bin regardless of color. But Bricklink, or Peeron is another good place..
Bricklinks search engine is hit or miss at times (same with Peeron, but Peeron seems more forgiving) so you will probably find your self searching the BL catalog, which is a good way to narrow down the parts, click on the link and you get the item page, which will show you what sets the part is from and such...

The Harry Potter sets shouldn't be a problem. I know Fluffy (the dog) only came with one set (4706) and so did the Basilisk (4730). As for Hagrid, just do a minifigure search and find the right version, that should narrow it down.

For the other pieces, you should post pictures of the distinctive ones-chances are someone here will recognize them or at least figure out the theme/subtheme. Good luck!

OK, been working my way through things for some considerable time and have a few 'mystery' items that I would appreciate some help identifying.
Snapped a pic ofthe first one this morning before leaving for work.
Anyone know what this is or what set its from?
Basically if you push the big gray button thing on the top the interior of the box rotates, cant for the life of me think of any use for it...

Ah, thanks Hob, so looking at the instructions it is just used like a magic cupboard, you put it over an item press the button and it rotates. Seems strange to have a lego item that you pickup like that i.e. it doesnt connect to the floor/base.

If you use bricklink and search for the dimensions, you can often find what you're looking for.
If you're not sure of all the dimensions, you can use the asterisk as a wildcard.
I can see this is 8x8, but not sure of the height, so I'll try 8x8x*

...

Sure enough, it appears 2nd on the list, and clicking on it confirms it to be in just the one set, which Hob mentioned.

I am still trying to get to grips with bricklink, I did try it, but think I missed the wildcard.
Looks like I have a large amount of Harry Potter to build, seem to have identified: 4701, 4706, 4708, 4712, 4721, 4730, 4755 and 4756 now too, possibly more to find.

Well Im nto sure anyone else said it, but if it is The shrieking shack one the set has prop Lupin that turns into Lupin with a werewolf head I believe

^ Nope, it is for transforming Sirius into animagus form and back again by switching the places of the minifigure and the grey dog. To transform Lupin you just take off his hair and put on the wolf headpiece in its place.

Thanks for the help! From your investigations, and doing a little more piece sorting, I can confirm the following:

1. No other 9754 Dark Side Developers Kit parts :(
2. 6915 Warp Wing Fighter
3. 6110 Solo Sub
4. 6586 Polar Scout
5. TBD
6. 6463 Lunar Rover
7. Found some of the cards to go with the display stands. Also found a couple with CITY on them.
8. Might be MEGA Bloks, found a bunch of those mixed in.
9. No other AAT parts :(
10. No other AAT parts :(
11. TBD
12. 2075 Prop Plane
13. Probably 4074 Tree 3, since I found other Studios partial sets mixed in.

I'll have some more help ID tomorrow, thanks!

@akjw - I don't think it is a 'set'. It looks like the remains of a MOC.
Here is a list of sets with the white 'tile 4x4 with studs on edge' (part #6179) -

Only a few sets have got four or more (as shown in your photos), and none have many of the other bricks in the image. The core of the model looks like it might once have been from the #7676 Republic Attack Gunship.

^ It looks like you've got at least part of the Bionicle Playset 8759 Battle of Metru Nui. That would explain the abundance of Dark Red pieces and those tiles with the stickers.

The core of the model looks like it might once have been from the #7676 Republic Attack Gunship.

It could also be the 7163 Republic Gunship, the predecessor to 7676.

People, would really appreciate your help with this one. Bought a small box of second hand and within it were a few unopened bags.
There are 4 bags in total and I am guessing that they are from the same set (due to the colors etc).
Anyone recognise this set?
