[US] New wave of clearance at Wal-Mart?

edited August 2012 in Shopping USA/Canada
In the Lego aisle at the Wal-Mart in Mishawaka, IN, they have just reduced some sets (on 08/01/12) that were not previously reduced. Some were reduced at other stores before, but not this one. And some I think are completely new reductions.

Old items, but new to my store:
I saw several Black Pearls at $69, and some other discounted PotC.
some Alien Conquest, and the SW T-6.
Newer items:
Cars movie Lego were reduced, some Hero Factory

Apart from the Black Pearl, the discounts were meager, like $5-10 off.

Two of my local stores had some discounts. At one the SW Pod racer, Frigate and Bounty Hunter were 30% off. At the other, saw simliar discounts as noted above with Cars, AC, PoTC, some Hero factory and the creator lighthouse on sale.

At my local store, saw minor discounts to the Friends lines. Several of the 9.99 Friends sets were a straight 9.00. By memory they were 3936, 3933, and 3932. Also saw 3187 for 24 straight and a minor discount on 3931.

Again all minor discounts, but I think that Walmart was just running high on inventory on those particular sets.

My Wal Mart has MASSIVE high amounts of the Friends sets. They did a "rollback" on them but the toy dept supervisor says the sets are pure shelf warmers. The summer wave has a center aisle dispay cube thing and they just sit. The Monsters sets on the same display are flying. I don't understand the talk about Friends selling so strong. Not in this area at least.

Saw these at Milford and Camden , DE stores
    3368 Space Center $35.00
    3365 Space Moon Buggy $3.50
    3366 Satellite Launch Pad $13.00
    7959 Geonosian Starfighter™ $21.00
    7961 Darth Maul’s Sith Infiltrator™ $49.00
    5884 Raptor Chase $21.00
May have been some Star Wars Planet sets to but my Walmart is bad about using clearance stickers for normal prices. Bought the Moon Buggy and Space Center ,but probably going to return the Space Center as I don't have a use for it even at the discounted price. Also need to save for the Haunted House next month.

After reading this post, I checked out my local WM and they indeed are having bunch of 30% off sale going on. Friends, SW, Dino, Cars, Super Heroes and LOTR.
    Examples:
    Battle of Helm $89
    Hulk's breakout $35
    Batcaves $49
    Quinjet Aerial Battle $49
    Cool Cruiser $30
    Lighthouse $30
    Space Center $49
    Police Dog van $25
    Police Station $69

Which ones should I get? Is Super Hero already phasing out? I was very surprised to see Helm battle got 30% discount.

^Doesn't mean Superhero wave is going out yet, but still is the best pricing I've seen on them (and Helm's Deep) so far. Would be good chance to pick up for personal collection, but maybe early for resell purposes. I've seen the Police, Space Center, Lighthouse and Cool Cruiser for cheaper before and those prices can be better.

Like all the other Wal-Mart (and Target) clearance sales, it's inconsistent. I visited 3 on the way home from work, and saw all of the deals mentioned here (except the Space Center was $49). For the 2011 sets, I expect they're on their way out the door. For the newer sets such as the super heroes and helms deep, these will be included in the reworked aisle and go back up to full price.

Anyone heard when they'd get in the new Heroes and Star Wars sets? I was just thinking they'd discount again to 50% if it was going to be a couple of weeks yet. My local WM don't have the shelve space to add any more boxes. Unless they display the boxes with only the one end showing or just the scanner code on the box showing...which they've started doing.

I swung by 2 WM tonight and one had most everything "red tagged" for clearance. SW Frigate, Bounty Hunter, General Grieveous, T-6, only 2 of the Dino themed($69 down to $49), most of the CARS theme, NO Batman, a lot of City and a few Super Heroes and Helms Deep.

I went over to the electronics area to find an employee(at night) and asked if prices that are marked 'clearance' with a red tag gets marked back up to regular price and she said no it will not. But then again...each WM is different and remember how confusing it was during their Feb. 1rst clearance. I was tempted to buy the Helms Deep, more expensive Super Heroes and the Dino sets but the store had 5-8 of each sitting there so I figured no rush.

Checked my local Walmarts after work in Billings Montana and yeahhhh buddy, they have just about all their LEGOs on clearance at around 30% off. I just couldn't wait any longer so I picked up 2 Black Pearls for $69(one for a co-worker) and the Millennium Falcon for $99. I originally bought the Podracers at $65(which they still have a ton of) but returned it after I saw just 1 out of the 3 Walmarts had the Falcon on clearance and in stock which the same store also had Queen Anne's Revenge at $79 that I reluctantly have to pass on(I only deliver pizzas for a living, lol). They also had Mines of Moria at $54 and Helm's Deep at $89. I'm trying to stick to only Star Wars here while making an exception for the Black Pearl as a LEGO fan, lol. I'm so happy that I finally have the Pearl and Falcon!

Saw TONS of Friends sets on clearance today. Ranged between 30-40% off. The SW (Podracers/Infiltrator/Republic Cruiser) stuff was about 20% off. Nothing else on clearance...
  • BumblepantsBumblepants Member Posts: 7,727
I find it shocking they would only be selling the LotR sets for just a few months before dumping them. One nearby Walmart had the same lousy stuff they had at the May clearance that still no one has touched but another had a ton of new stuff marked down including the Fire Station down to $55, the Space stuff, Lots of Creator, Marina, Frigates for $79, Pod Racers only $65. Also had watches for $11.xx and those big clockfig things marked down. Didn't buy anything yet but it is rather tempting to go back

Went to two different Walmarts in Alexandria VA. Neither had anything on clearance, and no sign of any LOTR sets, period.

The Walmart in Mt. Airy, MD had most of these listed. I couldn't believe a lot of the new stuff was on clearance. I picked up a bunch of Friends/Cars to give as b-day presents.
  • gmpirategmpirate Member Posts: 1,654
Checked out "one" Walmart in Orange County, CA where nothing was on clearance.
  • JenniJenni Member Posts: 1,390
I've been to three today, one had nothing on sale and oddly enough still had Christmas wreaths which is what happens when you don't have sales, and the others both had lots of stuff about 30% off but each had different things. Each had different Dino sets on sale, one had DC sets on sale and the other Marvel, only one had Ninjago on sale, one had all Friends on sale the other just two sets. So if you didn't find the set you wanted on sale I would check another store.

My local WM had a bunch of sets on clearance at about 30% off including SW (#7930, #7959, #7961, #7962, and #7964), HP (#4865, #4866, and #4867), Friends (the 4 small ones from the first wave), City (#3365, #3366, #3368, and maybe a couple more), Dino (I think only the Triceratops set), HF (#2283 and maybe a couple more), PotC #4191, and one Creator set.
Not sure why only some of the links worked. Anyone know?
  • lulwutlulwut Member Posts: 417
Saw all sets mentioned at 30% off. Tempting but will wait for the inevitable 50% after Christmas.

^^ I think you need a space between the parentheses and the number for it to work.

Wow, I didn't realize you could do that. Yup, it was the definitely the parentheses.
    ( #7930, #7959, #7961, #7962, and #7964 ), HP ( #4865, #4866, and #4867 ), Friends (the 4 small ones from the first wave), City ( #3365, #3366, #3368, and maybe a couple more), Dino (I think only the Triceratops set), HF ( #2283 and maybe a couple more), PotC #4191, and one Creator set.
Funny that commas don't affect it. Someone should get on that.

For most of the larger sets that are not EOL, I agree, wait for 50%. The smaller sets are a better deal now. Anything that was $20, now $13 (35% off) or was $10 (now $7) are great sets to get to have on hand. The make great last-minute birthday and Christmas presents, and if you don't need them for gists, some have decent pieces and minifigures in them. Besides the Friends sets, I've seen for $7 the small police helicopter (#7741), the Off-Road Fire Rescue (#7942), and the two Bricks and More sets (#4636, #4637)

The thing I keep in mind is, yeah, 50% is better than 30-35% off, but when (if) the sets get clearanced to that level, will there be any left?

^ I've never had any luck finding clearance deals at Walmart :-(

You are not alone.. I myself would love to find these mythical Walmarts with tons of stuff on Clearance, but there are a few factors here:
    1) Someone is beating me to the store (which is not hard, considering there are those apparently with nothing better to do than to patrol Walmart's every morning)
    2) There are people that work at Walmart who can buy the sets just as easily (which I think is what is going on by me as well).
    or
    3) the Walmart store simply does not clearance.. maybe being due to the store being in a nice area or having plenty of space on the shelves that they do not need to clearance items. I have seen this at Walmarts where they have LEGO in their 'clearance' aisle but not priced at discount (and yes I did use a price checker and found the prices to be retail).
    4) Sometime Walmart Clearances items but does not mark them OR put them in the clearance aisle, which means sets could be 50% off, but no one would know it unless the items are scanned (either at a scanning station, or find a store employee to scan them). This is how I did manage to find a couple of things at a Walmart once.

So do not feel bad and keep looking.

I did come close to seeing a massive clearance one at one of the 3 Walmarts near me, where I caught the end of it (A couple of King's Carriages and the Pyramid set from PQ at 50%) but I think it is luck of the draw many times due to the reasons above.

There are 5 Wal-marts in Tallahassee. I've only ever seen clearanced lego and one, and they had tons and tons. It was also the smallest of the 5. I've managed to see the rare smaller clearance at one of the others where they mark down stuff but leave it in the aisle.

I lucked into this clearance from stopping during a business trip in Iowa because I needed some advil for a headache.

They had pretty much everything listed at 30% off as mentioned eariler in this thread. Though the Mines of Moria set was still at full price. Picked up a Helms Deep and 3 of the Super Heroes sets (Hulk set, Truck set, Quinjet). It almost made up for missing the Easter TRS bonanza ...almost

Heads up Lego fans in the Fairfield/Vacaville area:

They had a big price down on both Lego and Friends at the Walmart in Fairfield. All the prices are from memory for forgive any errors

    Star Wars stuff:
Millenium Falcon for $99.00 (I picked one up but there were 2 left on Sunday) Republic Frigate for $74 (Only saw one left)
    Bounty Hunter Ship for $35
    Geonosian Starfighter for $21
V-Wing for $13 (Sold out when I was there)
    Darth Maul's Infiltrator for $49.99

    City:
    Marina for $35
    Space Centre for $49.99

Dino stuff all on sale, sorry I didn't pick up any prices but they were similar to the Star Wars savings.

They also had the $9.99 Friends line for $7.00 and the $19.99 sets for $14.00.

There might be a few sets I missed, but it looks like a nice sale. Wish I picked up more, but money is tight so things have to be a bit more tight.

I went to the Walmart in Milford, OH on Friday night and they had several sets on clearance, including most of the Dinos, Several of the City sets, and a couple of the SW sets(the Republic Frigate was $79? $89? Can't remember exactly-I might go back for that one). All were going for 30-40% off.
  • scotty12scotty12 Member Posts: 850
It's all hit and miss with Walmarts. I've found in Iowa at least that the smaller/older/less store volumed Walmarts clearance LEGO out faster because of shelve space. I hit 2 of my local larger WM and it was the same stuff most people were seeing (except for Ninjago and Friends). But today I was visiting relatives and stopped in the only non-super Walmart I know of in Iowa and they had Friends, Ninjago, ALL City, and the SW 9492 Tie for $31. But yet stuff that's been sitting there forever (SW 7913 &7914) still sit there for $12.97.

Was it still wise of me to pick up the Falcon at $99 and the Pearl for $69? Making me second guess myself, lol.

I missed them here, but if anyone runs into a geo fighter or Pod racer set for half off and wouldnt mind grabbing them for me for cost/ship (plus a little for the time/gas) LMK.

If it's worth it to you. I've stopped buying sets if isn't 40% off or more since I have never had trouble getting any set I wanted for at least 50% during the big retailer's clearances throughout the year.

Found most of the above on clearance at the same prices, ended up picking up the following:

    6864 - Batman Two-Face Chase $35
    9472 - LOTR Weathertop $40
    9473 - LOTR Mines of Moria $54

Can't believe the LOTR sets are being clearanced out so early...

I can relate to some of the posts in this thread. Usually I miss the rumored clearances and I have a feeling as though it's the employees beating me to it (as though I ever had a chance). I'm happy with a 30% off price less the sales tax I have to take into account since I just can't bank on a catching a clearance.

Woot! After 5 local Walmarts, I should have know to look at the oldest & first one built in the area - found my Helm's Deep for $89. Love it!

Yep, Target too... I think one factor is the relative economic prosperity of the Washington DC suburbs compared to other parts of the country. They're probably not doing tons of clearance discounts.. and I'm sure some of the stuff @madforLEGO said applies as well.

Judging by the huge line to get into Brickfair yesterday, I'm guessing there's no shortage of LEGO buyers around here!! ;-)

Clearance was in full force at my closest Walmart. Sadly, the PotC ships were already gone and the Millennium Falcon was not slashed. Super Heroes and LotR were not cut at all either.

I picked up several of the mid-range Friends sets, since I know they'll make good gifts for my nieces. Olivia's House was very tempting at $50, mainly because Friends actually seems to have even my wife interested in LEGO.

I just got back into LEGO a few months ago. I'm pretty picky about what I buy and the Falcon is already sold out but two Pearls are still there but their boxes are pretty beat up. I'm debating whether I should return my Pearl even tho it's the best looking box in the hopes that I can get it at 50% off later(I haven't opened it yet).

My closest Walmart is in a small town and it seems the community isn't into LEGO as much as the other areas. I am waiting on some of the other sets to hit 50% tho like the Podracers which they haven't even sold one. I'll take solace that my boxes are in great shape for now. And I've wanted these sets for quite some time.

Maybe down the line I'll have a better gauge on my stores for LEGO clearances so I can hold out a bit more.
  • thecleatorthecleator Member Posts: 70

Mikersoft you are almost certainly victim of at least one Bricklink store scooping up all the clearances. There is at least one big one that is listing minifigs from sets almost certainly purchased in this sale.

Yep, I had no luck at the DC area Walmarts either. Glad you enjoyed Brickfair...I drove out there, saw the line that literally wrapped around the entire Expo Center, and decided that I would leave Brickfair to the KFOLs and their parents. Couldn't bear to make my wife wait on that line....

I just stopped in at Wal-Mart here in Riverside, CA and found quite a bit of Lego on clearance/sale?? I noticed LOTR set 9474 The Battle at Helm's Deep for $89.00 each. I bought all 4 they had on the shelf. While there I also noticed the Avenger sets were clearance as well. I picked up 6867 Loki's Cosmic Cube Escape for $13.00 but saw they also had 6869 Quinjet Aerial Battle for$49.00 as well as all the DC Universe stuff red tagged as well. I asked the girl working if the red tag meant clearance or just a sale and of course she had no clue. Maybe clearing out for Christmas???? Wish I had more Lego cash sitting around, I probably would have cleared 'em out. Interested people better run to the local Wal-Mart and check to see if it is nationwide.

Yeah, here in Cincinnati I bought the Creator Log Cabin, Light House, Rescue Robot, Creator Dinosaur, and Lokis Cosmic Cube, all red tagged, Did miss out on the Black Pearl, also quite a bit of Star Wars, Dinosaurs, Cars, and City stuff marked down.
  • bigjsdbigjsd Member Posts: 62
There wasn't any Star Wars marked down in my Wal-Mart or I certainly would have snatched it up instead of the LOTR sets. I noticed quite a bit of LOTR on Ebay at lower than usual prices so people must be buying up the Wal-Mart items quickly. I will sit on the Helm's Deep sets for a couple months but I'm sure I will make money on them eventually. It's not a business for me, merely just a way to pay for MORE Lego.
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
Only one of my WMs had helms deep marked down but they were out. I did happen to find a $9 PoP Ostrich race set though. They must've found it in the back cause it was just set on the shelf in between some other sets.
  • jadedancjadedanc Member Posts: 1,302
We had SW Republic Frigate plus some other SW, Creator Log Cabin, Lighthouse, LOTR Helm's Deep, POTC all of them, Dino (lg set and helicoptor set), Loki's Cube and Jet set, plus some City sets (Police dog, Police Transport, Fire Transport, Fire Dept and Forest Police sets)
