@LTF - the light gray radar dish for 10019 (RBR) goes for about $50. Pretty rare.

The cottage? Frankly - I'm a little disappointed in it. The roof shape looks very similar to the WTS. I was hoping for a single larger modular-ish building, aka "haunted house". At least give me a ski slope if you're giving me skiers!

Yea, that one... I was hoping this one was light bley, so it would provide a cheap replacement. I don't need one, I just think that would be nice of Lego to do.

Price point aside, I really dislike this set based on the design alone. It doesn't seem to fit with the other sets in the series at all, and the 'extras' are tacky rather than appropriate. Big letdown on this one, though I won't stress over waiting to get it at a discount, so I suppose that's the silver lining.

I think compared to all the other sets it might not look the best, and it would have been nice if TLG had kept the same price point, but I still believe it will look nice with the other three Winter Village sets and 10173-1: Holiday Train.

For the most part, I like all the separate little parts of the build. I think the sled is just awesome, and so is the truck with plow. The igloo could have been a little more iglooy, but I still really like its inclusion. The wood hut thing I'm not crazy about thought, but its starting to grow on me.

We must be looking at totally different pictures.

Tammy, I love the hi part count, but I hear you... They coud have cut 200 parts out of the set without major issue and cut the price $15-20 and that would have been nice. At least tint crazy like $149. :)

Agreed. It isn't completely over-the-top at $150, but yes, if they could have cut it back to $80, and I would feel better with it. In this case, I still 'feel' like I'm getting exactly the same amount I did in the other sets, with a building and vehicle.

Sure, the piece count it more, but it just doesn't 'feel' like more. I think that is part of the struggle I'm having here as well.

With something like MMV, it was an entire village, and animals, and small other items. That felt like a value. I guess for me if they are going to jump in price, I want to feel like WOW, that is something I really want to spend my money on, as opposed to the feeling of, eh, I wish they would have cut back 200 parts and cut the price. I have much more of that WOW factor with the haunted house.

^ Keep in mind that Haunted house is nearly twice the price, at $180

All your other points are valid, IMHO...

Love it! it's great, and they're my fave series. yeah, I wish it was cheaper so I could buy several, but I'm just very pleased with how it looks. the interior is fantastic and I adore the igloo. yaaaay!
  • brickupdatebrickupdate Member Posts: 1,020
Are they really charging $99 for this? I suppose they are doing a more detailed build, like the LOTR sets, but it lacks a wow-factor. It seems very similar to the others sets in this series, that were nearly half the price. Were they THAT big of sellers that they felt they could increase the price point this much?

It looks a lot like one of the buildings from MMV, but overall, it gives the impression of a much smaller set.
  • mathewmathew Member Posts: 2,099
Looks pretty good to me. I'm not sure what the critics/whiners were really expecting? Less snow on the roof? It's supposed to be winter. More buildings? It would cost $150. Too expensive? It's 1400 pcs. Wrong color? That's subjective.

I have a good idea...build your own Winter Cottage and quit complaining.

I wish that there was a bit more consistency with the winter village sets. The same amount of snow covering on the roof, the same street lamps, etc. would make it seem more like it was all from the same village.

I agree with this completely. It drove me nuts that the post office had a snow 'smattered' roof and then, design-wise, really completely distanced itself from the thematically similar bakery and toy shop. Even still, I felt the extra elements that were with the post office were quite nice. Here, the plow and the igloo are doing nothing for me except ultimately cluttering my display, while I actually really like the woodshed that others seem to feel lest positive about. The interior is actually quite nice here as well, but the entire Winter Village series has had some pretty great interiors.

At the end of the day, maybe this is just one of those sets that you have to build to appreciate, but the pictures make it seem like more of a cash grab and less of a set that I need to get on display in time for Christmas.

Out of curiosity, is the light brick in the fire place?

This series is also one of our family favorites. Now that there are four different WV sets, everyone will get to build one set each. Now we have to design MOC WV chapel to complete it in the next couple months. I would also like to find a way to light up the miniature Christmas lights... So many projects! :-)

    I believe it is.

This sounds great! Our family just started collecting the Winter Village sets last year and we plan on making it an annual tradition to built them.

Is the Toy Store discontinued? We got the bakery and post office but the toy store sold out before we could nab it.

    ^yes

And it's already more $$$ than the Cottage will be.
  • harrelmusicharrelmusic Member Posts: 65
Toy Store is gone. I didn't realize until I sold mine thinking I'd pick up another if I decided to complete the series. At least isold it for a profit

I have also had other sets I have felt a "wow" about that weren't as pricey as the Haunted House. :-) Hagrid's Hut, Bag End, MMV.

For whatever reason, I am just not getting it here.
Now it is possible that I feel completely different after seeing this in person. I could see that at a bigger size, it could have more play value.

IMO, TLG really need to get a grip of this series as its just declined over the last few years. Compared to the toy shop and bakery the Post Office and this have been quite disappointing - both in design and price. Given that this is the series I look forward to the release announcement for more than any other I should be really excited about getting it, but I'm not. Nor was I for the Post Office. Admittedly I did get it and no doubt will get this, but its getting close to the point where I could let one go, and once my series isn't complete then there's less reason to keep getting them. There is definitely a chance I wont get this set depending what it looks like in hand.

The look is less 'cute', the design doesn't really match (with the post office thaw you could kind of just fit it in with the other sets, but now they add a set with 2ft of snow???) the vehicles are hit and miss and the price is just getting silly for a set that will be out of box for just 6 weeks a year. I just don't see how this set should be more than the post office. The band stand that came with was easily equal to the wood shack and igloo combined, the vehicles match each other.

To me the cottage isn't as good as the post office which wasn't as good as the bakery which wasn't quite as good as the toy shop, and actually I'd say the same if they all cost the same. Sorry, but its a series in decline to me.

I will probably be using my VIP points to get this set, but I do understand why people may not be feeling this one. You might have also noticed that the Toy Shop and Bakery increased in price last year and again earlier this year.
  • atkinsaratkinsar Member Posts: 4,258
I think it looks great, but it's my fourth favourite in the series, so by those high standards, I guess it's a little disappointing. In fact, my favourite is the Toy Shop and it's been a downward slope from there BUT I still love them and hope it continues for many years to come.
  • paul_mertonpaul_merton Member Posts: 2,967
Oh no, it looks like this set has stickers :(
  • iBartiBart Member Posts: 121
    Just like two previous...
  • Steve_J_OMSteve_J_OM Member Posts: 995
^^ I only see one potential sticker - the wreath on the door. The newspaper looks suspiciously like it might have a sticker, though I've only ever come across printed newspaper tiles before.

I love the look of the set, the cottage is gorgeous IMO. The last image in particular has made me completely fall for the set; it just looks so cosy. The details like the hanging stockings and the tiny tree are magnificent.

I understand people's frustrations about a staple annual purchase going up in price, and accordingly having to find more room in the budget when we've already been inundated with great sets for the year. But taking the set on its own merits, I think it's good value (though I take other peoples' points about the abundance of 1x1 seeming to make up the piece count).

I'm in two minds about the minifigures. I can't help but feel that they are excessive in this, but I guess if you're trying to build a village then it's good to have a decent number of them.

Many times with LEGO: the more detailed, the more it will cost..
All those tiny pieces to be make it look 'more realistic' will also mean more money needed to buy it IMO

A cottage sounds very cozy to build in the winter. :)
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Member Posts: 10,788
I'm guessing it is more cost effective to use stickers. If that is the case then say goodbye to most printed brick. Heck we are lucky LEGO does not go back to stickers on the torsos.

If you don't like heavy snow on the roof of the cottage, don't build it that way . . . That's what Lego is all about. You can build it anyway you want. It's a simple fact that no matter what TLG group designed for this year at least a few people would find fault with it. This is a good opportunity for families to learn abou micro climates - why in one valley it may snow 4 inches, but a valley nearby may receive a foot of snow! I like it in spite of the price and when the time comes if it fits into the budget I'll happily bring it home and if not maybe I'll be lucky enough to trade my extra WV Toy Shop for it.
  • SpiderManSpiderMan Member Posts: 47
When do the Winter sets usually get discounted at? I don't think I would pay full price for this set, but will definitely pick it up if discounted some!

I agree, but I'm more upset that you have an extra Winter Toy Shop ;)

I will be buying at least one of these cottages.
    I love all the features.

With interest in the Winter Village sets increasing, I don't think we can rely on sets being discounted. So If you think it is too expensive just save a few more VIP points to spend on this.

If the sets are discounted after Xmas.... then buy it when you can.
  • iBartiBart Member Posts: 121
    [email protected] discounts:
    January 2012 - 10216 (WV Bakery) and 10222 (WV Post Office) [!].

I guess 10199 (WV Toy Shop) was on sale for a moment
    - then it was sold out (EOL).

  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639
For last year, all 3 WV sets were on sale by 25% off day after Christmas. But Toy Shop started first and was on sale starting Black Friday into Christmas. Most stores ran out of it by day after Xmas though, so had to call around to all locations in US before getting some shipped from the Lego B&M Minneapolis store (free shipping discount too).

So question is, do you want to wait until Christmas has passed to get a discount and build the Cottage?
  • Farmer_JohnFarmer_John Member Posts: 2,405
^Assuming TLG has the same sales this year that they had last year. I hope they do, but it's just a hope...
  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639
^Yes last year's BF sales were excellent plus the 10% or more off, plus the Holiday PAB box, plus the Holiday Set 1 & 2. Last year worked out very well for the informed buyers. Sets on sale I remember were EN & TS, but what else was discounted?
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454

The sales were great last year, plus all the give a ways. Pet Shop was 10% off BF

Also, Winter Toy Shop and Mill Village Raid was on sale as well as some City stuff. I picked up the Tanker Truck too.
  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639
^Do you remember if any of the SW UCS sets on sale for BF? Such as Obi-Wan, SSD, IS, or DS? I'm hoping the incoming B-Wing or outgoing IS will see a discount this year.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
If IS is still available I would imagine it being on sale.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
If everything goes as it did last year, WVB, WVPO and WVC will be in the Holiday 2012 Catalog and Late Holiday 2012. WVB may be on sale and EOL'd by January 2012.
  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639
^I really regret not picking up more copies of WV Toyshop last year at $42/per, so counting on WV Bakery to go on massive sale this time around. I'm crossing my fingers the Cottage will have a discount for BF though!

I don't pay too much attention to your mouth watering sales threads ('your' meaning US), but I'm sure the IS was on sale for you last BF. Wasn't it?

    ^lol
  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639
^^Can't find promo ad for BF, but my memory is that IS was not on sale, nor any of the UCS sets. But not sure if I recall correctly or old age is catching up. 4 more months seem so far away...
  • turtle1173turtle1173 Member Posts: 230
I did a little digging. Here's a list I found for last year's Lego Shop BF sales (which was from the 25th - 28th):

    Online Exclusives (25% off)

    10199 Creator Winter Toy Shop
    10210 Pirates Imperial Flagship
10215 Star Wars UCS Obi Wan’s Jedi Starfighter
10195 Star Wars Republic Dropship with AT-OT Walker
    10198 Star Wars Tantive

Amazon had the IS for $198 on the 25th. 10210 flagship was $149 on Nov 28th, emerald night was $89.99, dropship was $237.

Dropship was $220 & IS was $219 on the 30th on Amazon.
  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639
Wow, nice digging @turtle1173. All those sets have been winners on the aftermarket, aside from 10215, and all were EOL'd following that sale.
  • LegoboyLegoboy Member Posts: 8,827
I'm sure IS was available. I think it may have been Amazon though.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
Don't remember the IS being on sale at least on [email protected] The Death Star never goes on sale, but they did have couple VIP points for it a few months ago.

We are kinda going off topic, but I'm sure WVB will be on sale and probably EOL by January.
  • RennyRenny Member Posts: 1,145
Man, I wish I was collecting Lego at that time. I would have loved to purchase the Emerald Night and Imperial Flagship at those prices.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
10194 Emerald Night was also 25% off, plus the 10% BF discount, net of about $62 a copy...

    Yea, that was sweet! :)
