^ don't apologise, that's brilliant, thank you! :) Can't wait for this (or more news about it) now!

Now the only question for me is will another set fit on our allocated tabletop next December? Got the wife to make a nice tablecloth with white lego stud fabric (exactly the right scale) this year and it looked nice with the toyshop, bakery, post office and cottage on top. Being a market i should be able to squeeze it in, but I like them a little spaced out...

    1) @tom4086 : thanks for the pic!
    2) The date says 06.12.12 - would that be June or December? I'm not clear on which dating convention is being used.

Do you disassemble your Winter Village sets completely every year, or do you leave them partially assembled and put them in storage? I've found they can be somewhat time-consuming to take all the way apart and could see this only becoming worse with impending future releases.

We make an afternoon of it. Stick on a Christmas film in the background and build the winter sets :)

I love it, how the talk went from " winter village post office retiring" to " entire winter village line being retired " to......" oohhh a new one is coming" ( anticipated eagerly).
The winter village series adds a certain charm to the Christmas display and is a tradition now in some families including mine, its not going anywhere:-)

#10229 Winter Village Cottage isn't being discontinued, just reduced to help clear a bit of stock.

    How do you know this?
  • Steve_J_OMSteve_J_OM Member Posts: 995

I could believe that the post office isn't coming back. The first winter set had a short life (winter train) and had to be discounted heavily to sell.

You're not comparing like with like though - the train was a limited release (according to Brickset) and not part of the Winter Village theme.

That's great news about the Winter Village Market - I was only saying to my other half when we were building last year's that the village needed a proper 'town square' type scene. Though there is no room for so much as a tile where I've been displaying the village for the last two years :(

The problem with 10173 Holiday Train was that at its time of release in 2006 it really didn't go with anything and was also really expensive at the time! €90. Had TLG released the set now it would be a totally different story, and probably fly of the shelf. Guess you could called it Lego's ugly duckling!

LEGO also had to discount the 10173 Holiday train to clear stock on it, Im guessing because it was not 9v powered

    common sense?

Surely it would make more sense for the WV Bakery to be retired - to follow the 3 years that the WV Toy Shop had.
  • PaperballparkPaperballpark Member Posts: 4,268
^ oh yeah WV Bakery definitely has been retired.

@tensor because the nice lady in the shop told me that's why Lego were reducing it. That's one of the other things I said we'd talked about. Apparently the reduction will be until March 3rd.

The other one was that they've been told the Fire Brigade modular is going to be retired this year (no real surprise tbh), but apparently nothing has been said about the GE, so it looks likely that'll be around until next year (I specifically asked about GE retiring).

My Spanish isn't too good, as in non-existant... But I thought amazon.es had a stock count of 4. I just ordered 4, but it hasn't changed. What gives?
  • TheLoneTensorTheLoneTensor Member Posts: 3,937
Since when have store employees had truly reliable information about anything?
  • PaperballparkPaperballpark Member Posts: 4,268
In the absence of knowing anyone else who knows anything about what Lego are doing, I'll take my chances in believing what she told me :)
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Member Posts: 10,788
Most holiday sets are discounted to rid them of excess stock, regardless of if they are EOL or not, as the PO was discounted last year as was the Bakery last year and the year before I believe.

Yes indeedy, I got a few of each of those in-store at 30% off last year in the Feb/Mar time frame. Sets at 30% off right now is exacly what you would expect given prior history. It will be back, and will again be 30% off a year from now. :)

Should the announcement of the new Winter Village Market (thanks @Grogall and @LegoBoy) get its own thread? Or does Brickset wait until it's "officially" announced by LEGO?

Either way, I'm excited at the idea of the Winter Marketplace...

If you can still get it, the 2010 Advent Calender, #2824, has a City Christmas theme that works just fine with the rest of the Winter Village set. I have all the sets and can't fit them on my mantel any more. If they brought out a Winter Marketplace, I'd jump on it in a second but might have to make the family forego Christmas dinner so I could use the dining table for my layout...

I don't think so! Everyone will love debating/discussing this through the summer months. :) Doesn't LEGO typcially reveal the season's winter theme set around August/September anyways? It isn't long after that, that the winter shopping catalog comes out.

  • DeadareusDeadareus Member Posts: 264
Was kind of thinking we might get this set revealed from the same show the Ewok Village revealed at this weekend.

    Apparently not.

I recall the Cottage going on sale last September so you can assume the Winter Market will be available around the same time. I'm REALLY excited to lay my eyes on it.

    Soon hopefully.

Mods: Perhaps this thread title can be changed to better suit all things WV? Just a thought.

    An interesting comment here: http://www.bricksetforum.com/discussion/11444/10235-winter-village-market

I noticed the "Combine with 10229 Winter Village Cottage for an even bigger winter scene!", no mention of any other Winter set, it could mean that #10222 is actually retired...

I'm sure glad I picked one up when Amazon had a few on sale.
  • CircleKCircleK Member Posts: 1,055
Does the fact that #10222 is actually listed as Retired on The [email protected] site mean anything? Or is that common with seasonal items during their down time?

Looks to me like it is retired.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
Yes, this is interesting. Retired on [email protected] more than likely that it IS retired, but doesn't mean there isn't stock somewhere else.

AFAIK/IIRC after Christmas all WV sets are "retired", and then some get "unretired" by September/October. But in this case the copy for the latest WV sets mentions no older set except the previous one, it does not mention #10222 . Which IMHO is a pretty solid indicator that #10222 has been retired.
  • PaperballparkPaperballpark Member Posts: 4,268
Ah but the Modular Cinema doesn't have FB or GE on the back, and clearly they're not retired yet.

What I'm saying is that you can't use that as a guide to whether other sets are retired or not.
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Member Posts: 10,788
I'm not sure as I do not know if the 'retired' page was around back when Toy shoppe went away but I would say that with these sets retired during the summer does not surprise me, and would not surprise me if they are 'un-retired' before the holiday season.
I also find in a bit humorous that many people who probably thought that the #10222 was too expensive to buy and it was not a great set are probably now lamenting that it is not available.

Ultimately, you can speculate all you want, but we will know come Oct/Nov when they put up all the Winter sets for sale.
That will be the ultimate indicator.

    Can you really do anymore?

I will say if it is truly gone I can see it rising in price dramatically as I'm guessing many seasoned buyers probably did not expect it to be gone so abruptly and did not stock up on it.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
I honestly thought it was still going to be available this year, but in limited quantities. The Bakery was sold out, then all of a sudden it went to "Call to check for availability". Lego [email protected] must have found some in a warehouse somewhere. I called and was able to snag a few.

I am upset with myself that I didn't get more Post Offices, but the Bakery is a better set and will perform better in my opinion.
  • CircleKCircleK Member Posts: 1,055
The PO is certainly the least popular of the first three sets, but I actually like it better than the bakery bc of the front window and the gazebo. The toy shop will probably always be my favorite though.

The fact that the PO went a year earlier than expected will probably give it more push in the after market. I'm assuming there were several of us that got burned on this one.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
^Well, it was certainly more money and yes, it did catch most of us off guard.

Just noticed that the Winter Village series is on Lego.com with an expected availability date and there's no post office. So it's retirement is official...

    :(
  • PaperballparkPaperballpark Member Posts: 4,268
@CupIsHalfEmpty Where does it show the Winter Village series? As far as I can see it's only showing the WV Market so far, so I'd say they haven't re-listed any of last year's sets yet.

I'm not counting any chickens just yet...

@paperballpark I don't want to believe it, but I'm now accepting that it's gone. Here's to hoping TRU has it briefly. Links below.

    Market "Coming Soon Oct 1st"

Ahh you're on the Canadian site. I'm looking on the UK site, which doesn't yet show either the Cottage or Post Office.

Still, it does look as though the PO has actually been retired. It gives me no pleasure to say this, but, well...

I'd just remembered about this thread, and I'm really happy I bought one back when Amazon suddenly had a couple available. Kind of amazing to see a much disputed warning/prediction (based on let's face it feeble evidence) become truth.
