Hey Everyone,

I am looking to begin plans to draw up a master pirate hideout/island/port of call. Any ideas on what I should include/exclude? Anyone have any photos they can share? I am only in the very initial stages of thinking this through so my idea's are by no means set in stone. I do want a lot and want it to be large. Any help/assistance or otherwise is always appreciated!!

Are you going to use baseplates? You could base something off what I consider to be the best Pirate base/island hideout, Rock Island Refuge - but the raised base plate could be a challenge to expand upon. I've also seen lots of Pirate MOC's with a lot of BURP's...strangely I don't think they are as ugly as a lot of people do.

A rocky bay with wharf/pier, a tavern, a hidden cave, lots of palm trees! Almost any scene from The Secret of Monkey Island game!

    How about this:
    Turtle Island - LHS 3/4
    Dedgecko

Yes I think these are great ideas. I have seen that picture before somewhere recently...its pretty cool. I plan on spending perhaps thousands of dollars on this and maybe years! I want this to be epic. I am going to build from the ground up. Is this too big a task? ? ? ?

I was actually going to do a mix. So I assume I have to begin with baseplates for the entire "framework", but ultimately I want an area of rocky coast line so I will build up ( and have to figure out what to put inside the rock formation to keep it sturdy, but yeah, overall I am going to need quite a few baseplates. 3 colors, blue, tan and green.

If you are not going to see the interior, then duplo is strong and cheap and quick to build.

If you want to create an "ultimate" port, I'd recommend that you include those basic elements of the real thing. First, you need a defense of some sort since Lego has been so kind as to emphasize military over civilian life in the era. A fortress and perhaps a lookout tower guarding the port would accomplish this. Second, you'll need a government house, the seat of the colonial authority, residence of the governor, etc. Third, you need a warehouse or two for merchants. Trade is the lifeblood of a colony be it importing wares from abroad or exporting raw materials to the mother country. Finally, you need entertainment for land-starved sailors, privateers and pirates. A tavern or two to keep them happy will suffice.

There are some amazing "Classic Pirates" type creations on MOCpages. It can be a bit hard to separate the wheat from the chaff on that site, but some of the better stuff could provide great inspiration. I would definitely recommend a trawl through MOCpages if you need inspiration for just about any creation.
