You can normally throw in a few bricklink orders at various stages too. I don't bother building in the right colours first. I build using parts I have to check it works then order parts in colours I need later.
It always helps to download and read lego instructions for similar building sections in existing sets.
You can of course use LDD and do it digitally, but I prefer building and designing by hand.

Thanks for your replies, I've got a decent range of bricks to get started with so I think I'll just use my initial sketches and go with the trial and error. See how I get on before ordering any specific bricks!
The arena looks fantastic, I can see why it would take so long to build! I don't think mine will be anything like that scale or any where near as good but I'll give it a go!
(shame about the no football sign! haha)
