I do appreciate the kind words though. This is my third modular moc and a complete departure in style for me.
I’m guilty of doing the same!
I have had more than my fair share of fun pitting Johnny Thunder and his pals against the evil Señor Palomar this evening!
In a hidden crater shrouded in perpetual night near the south pole of the Moon, Blacktron sympathizers work around the clock to mold bricks of explosive red rhydonium. Stay tuned ....
Depends on your attitude as you put them up but Tetris definitely woprks as a play attitude
Fun build - and the best helmet so far, in my opinion!
and #5978 Sphinx Secret Surprise...
You could get a complete set of the Juniors pirate sets, which are much more affordable. Unfortunately they look like Jack Stone meets Redbeard, but beggars can’t be choosers, right?…🙂
I ordered #10264 and #80107. Still need #10278.
I've built #10251 Brick Bank. The experience was okay...about as expected. The only part I found really interesting was the bank vault. My 3 year-old figured out that the washing machines were removable all on his own. (...although he often removes other things that aren't supposed to be removable.) He was very interested in dropping pieces into the machine and having it come out the back. Really, the rest of the bank came off as nothing really special or noteworthy. Maybe that's because I was just anticipating what was to follow...
I spent quite a bit of time building #10255 Assembly Square. It was a joy to build. As I had recently built all the previous modulars, I was noticing some things referencing the older sets...starting with floor patterns that were re-used. Also, the photographer really looks like Jamie Hyneman from Mythbusters. I can't unsee that. The most amazing part of the set to me was the bakery window made by putting a garage door sideways. I was absolutely amazed that the same garage door pieces that my brother had on a fire station in the early 1980s was sized so that the edges would fit into bricks. I had no idea it would do that! Yet another time that I'm amazed how well dimensions of Lego bricks happen to fit together in unusual ways. The part of the set I like the least is the bakery oven. My son would push the pin on the back and make the baked goods fall out of the oven...and my big adult fingers would have a hard time reaching down in to retrieve it and put it back in. Overall, I love the set and it's my favorite so far. (Sorry #10246 Detective's Office...but you still rock.)
I then built #10260 Downtown Diner that I managed to order shortly before it was discontinued. It's an interesting set and I know some people don't like how the 50s look is so different than the sets before it, but I actually don't mind. What I DO mind is a few nit-picky things like no studs on the stools or booths so that minifigs are loose in the building. A bump and they're on the floor. The car also seems superfluous and merely there to reinforce that this is the 1950s. I did like the recording studio with the "padding" on the walls of the recording booth. The gym is okay. Not a fan of how the "ropes" for the boxing ring were done. With the antenna on the roof, I have to wonder if that recording studio was originally supposed to be a radio station. That's something that could be fun in a future modular.
I'm currently 1/3rd of the way through #10264 Corner Garage. It's a fairly standard build so far. The 45º front window of the garage was interesting. I really don't like the garage door though. It's great how there's a tire exposed that can roll the door up and down, but it's WAY TOO EASY to roll it too far. My 3 year-old has rolled it too far 5 times in the last 24 hours...which means I have to take the assembly apart, pull the door out, re-insert it in the track, and put the side pieces back on. It's a pain and it seems like something could have been done to prevent it from being so easy to roll the door too far. I'll build the top two floors over the weekend and probably into next week.
After that, we move on to the first modular set that's actually NOT mine. My wife is an author, so she has claimed #10270 Book Shop as HERS! :) This means that we'll be doing it as a build together. (I'll likely gather the pieces and she'll put them together.) She's not nearly as experienced as me with Lego, but learning. This will probably take quite a while to finish. ...and then I'll (order and) move on to #10278 Police Station and finally #80107 Spring Lantern Festival. After the last one is done, I'll arrange them all on tables in the basement and finally start getting the Lego city organized!
EDIT: OH! I forgot to mention... Starting with #10246, as I've built each one, I've left a little note on a small piece of paper that says "Built by Patrick and [SON'S NAME] starting on [DATE STARTED]" and I've been hiding it into some hollow part of the building. (Under the windows in the Brick Bank, under the back steps by the bakery in Assembly Square, in the overhang above the windows in the Corner Garage, etc.) I expect that in a few years if/when my son pulls something apart, he'll find the note.
I've started on #7595 Toy Story Green Army Men. It's lovely! So much green!
They actually issued a redesign of the neck sometime during the run of the set to mediate that issue. If you haven't already done so, and you have the instruction book with the set ID number on it, you can likely still contact LEGO CS about getting the parts needed for the revision as well as potentially the updates instructions (or at least an addendum for them) with the new build for free. I'm not sure they will still be doing the replacement since its ~6 years out now, but I would say it's still worth checking if you haven't already.
