The Christmas/Holiday themed display thread

Having just come out of my Dark Ages 1 year ago this coming weekend...I just had my very 1st successful holiday display this year with the Haunted House and some trick r treaters ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/ ).

Now that Halloween is gone I find myself extremely excited about the idea of decorating the house with more Lego over Christmas as well.

Naturally I did what any good addict would do and ordered the Winter Village Bakery and Cottage immediately to start things off this year (I assume that the post office will still be available next year... Hopefully).

Would love to see some displays of what others have done with the Winter Village series. I'm excited to build this with the family after the tree goes up on December 1.

    Great idea for a thread, I don't think it should be merged with either of those two linked.

    I'm very interested to see the Winter Village displays of others. Last year I used road baseplates (can't find the Brickset entry, but it can be found in #377 Shell Service Station) but this year it might not work. I only had the Toy Shop and Bakery; this year I'm adding the Post Office and Cottage to the display.

    What is the biggest white plate you can get? I'd love it if something like this came in white: http://brickset.com/detail/?Set=628-1

    ^ I used those last year and covered in white plates, but this year I think I will just use the white plates and look to try to make it modular, it was a real pain trying to carry 3 of those connected together from where I was building to the place for the display. I'm thinking 6 smaller sections that connect via technic pins like the modular houses do.

    @Steve_J_OM they make a 32x32 white baseplate. Not available for sale, but can be picked up on BrickLink for a reasonable price.

    ^Eep, the cheapest seller that has more than one in stock charges €10.95 a baseplate. Reckon you'd need three to comfortably display the four sets.

    Anyone ever try dyeing baseplates or is that a ridiculous suggestion?

    If you can get hold of this (or a few) reasonably cheaply it is a good way of picking up a few 16x16 and 16x32 baseplates: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=3538-1
    Used to be able to get the set dirt cheap on ebay, but doesn't seem any bargains at the moment. Worth keeping an eye out for though.

    ^ a simple modified version of a few of those sets would make a great ski hill w/ the village at the foot of the hill.

    My plan right now is to add to the existing frozen pond and build a larger snow covered hill on one side.

    I'll use whatever white bricks and plates I have lying around this year and perhaps look to add some more elements via BL next year.

    REALLY excited to get these sets in hand and start building them come December 1st!

    ^ I did a ski slope last year with exactly that in mind, using most of the parts from 3538 (I think there's a pic on the other thread above). My layout was mounted on 3 16x32 plates and 3 32x32 road plates, which was about right to fit the first 3 WV sets with all the extras - I just used the white plates that come with each set and spare white plates / bricks to cover up the rest of the grey - looking like they had shovelled the snow clear of the roads, etc.

    I'm pondering how to put part of the village at the top of the ski slope this year (maybe with the mine or a train tunnel underneath it!!!)

    I need to come up with a Winter theme for a public display this year. I've got the past Winter sets, and I don't think I can afford the new one prior to Christmas...a Santa workshop is a great idea.

    Has anyone built reindeer before?

    I haven't built for the Modular, but I do keep adding things into the Winter Village. The new ~$5.00 Holiday train I will be usurping to double as one of those kid train rides in my village. I may buy a 2nd one, so I can easily create another car.

    I created an ice skating pond.
    I used my newly found mountain parts from the recent Mine discount, to create a ski slope.
    I am debating combining these to have a nice outdoor winter areas.

    I have Toy Shop, Bakery, and Post Office (which I love) and I added my own creation of local St. Louis landmark. It's a frozen custard stand that I thought would fit right in with the other buildings. I just got this years cottage and I am a little disappointed in how big it is and that the price went up so much. The wood shed and igloo are cute, but I don't really care for the snow plow. I don't think it goes with the period of the rest of the village. I also added a Holiday Train last year and would like to expand the track some.

    You got a closer shot of Ted Drewes? (I'm assuming that's the custard stand you're talking about. I miss my Cardinal Sin).

    thanks! I don't have enough pieces nor horses to pull off Reindeer so since the Legolympics challenge calls for a story to be told, I've found a quirky replacement to tell a story with haha

    AWESOME! How on earth did you get the lamp posts to be lit? Love that little display.

    I think out of the 4 Winter Village sets I just purchased these will be the first 2 on display once the Christmas tree goes up.

    @deadareus - not sure, and I'm a little too scared to count once it's taken down hahaha - the project is being made for the Legolympics Christmas Diorama Challenge so it's epic in scale for that. If I had control over it then I would have about 1,300 pces at most. This looks more like 3,000 atm :s but thanks heaps for your vote!

    Finally (after several years of not getting them out of their boxes for one reason or another) got around to building the 'Winter Village' display that will be up for Dec in our house, kids love it and i am getting to rebuild it on a regular basis :)

    Looking good guys. Man I need a lot more white bricks!

    We just opened the Bakery yesterday. Toy Shop is complete as are 2 holiday sets. Post Office and Cottage will be under the tree.

    I'll start getting the village together in a bit and post some pics.

    ^^ Yeah, nice. But did you run out of the "brick" bricks? The top row of them looks a little strange with the lime ends, and also the change in brick pattern where they join the row below.

    For me, the overhang in the snow on the roof is what gives it the realism. This is a nice touch.

    I haven't gotten everything together yet. We're decorating with the grandkids this weekend. I got a few of the Christmas Train and Sanata w/ sleigh along with WV Bakery and Post Office. I'm putting the latter two together with the oldest Grandson while my wife and younger grandson decorate the tree.

    No pics yet as too much left to do, but I'm using the fluffy white stuff and small things don't stand up well! Like Karrde I don't have enough white plates.

    ^ I just use small white plates. 4 x 4 are perfect. 2 x also work.

    Ha. My display/collection is going to have an African Christmas (despite the fact that I'm in the UK). No snow but a lot of dust. :P Maybe I should get round to cleaning it up a bit?

    Toy Shop, Bakery and Post Office now all arranged on the desk in the lounge. My youngest and me very pleased.

    Winter Cottage, 2012 Holiday Set, Santa w Sledge, 3 base plates and a pile of white plates will appear in his stocking. Really looking forward to seeing it all completed (and hope I ordered enough white plates...!)

    Okay. Here is our partially completed Winter Village. We are quite limited to only the bricks my kiddos have, which impacts things. The ski mountain is a step up from last year, but we don't really have the white pieces at this point to make it better. We went with a partial snow cover for that reason.

    We still haven't put up the Cottage, the 2012 exclusive or the kid's train ride.
