The Rivendell set is gorgeous! Gives me hope they will release *the precious* in the next year or two. My pathetic attempt about 10 years ago got turned into holiday mountain.  @samiam391
Santa cosplaying the Steward of Gondor has me concerned there.

@devilhead That's a rather silly attitude. 'Thanks Lego for making this set ridiculously overpriced, that's okay I'll just skip meals and medical expenses'... Lego is going down the path of Gucci and it's not good. Indeed I won't be surprised if they do a Ferrari type thing where you can't buy 'X' set unless you already own 'Y' set.
You're right.  Setting a goal; making a plan to achieve that goal; and suggesting making minor sacrifices along the way is incredibly silly of me.  And god forbid suggesting it would be a good way to accumulate a substantial amount of bonus points (which translates into a future discount).  How silly is that?  Shame on me for thinking such a thing.  It's far sillier than thinking I have the right to tell people (that I don't know) they have a problem for spending their money how they see fit.  Also, far sillier than replying to a comment in a way that does not address the point made.  Further still, it's sillier than inapplicable analogies.  Don't get me started on how this is sillier than any comment suggesting that I know the economics of a large multinational corporation than they do.  I think I'll just change my screen name to Silly Goose now.

@Covi and @J0rgen clearly understood what was said. I was not commenting on the price of the set; it is essentially irrelevant to the point I was making.

"Silly devil headed goose" has a nice ring of truth to it anyway.

^ samian391.  Any lego build is a good thing.
Not trying to build a Minas Tirith is the "pathetic" attitude. :)

A massive one time set might suit some people with plenty of money, and other people who know how to save up / put aside cash....
But Lego should try and aim at a middle market?

Modular sets to build one final bigger set might be the way to do this.

The latest HP series is doing quite well in this regard....

However there will always be critics saying
"Well that set is too expensive, or not quite big enough, or not quite what they thought the model should look like."

This is lego. We can all adapt sets to suit our needs, or build another version with our other lego?

I am amazed how many of you know so much about LOTR! Did you acquire your knowledge from the books or movies? Both?
  • arathemisarathemis Member Posts: 604
    I acquire it from here

@Brickfan50 there are a lot of knowledgeable members in the forum (not me). I read the books way back in high school and watched the movies when they came out and rewatched the hobbit ones back when Lego did the sets which aligned with my sons age.  So when the new Rings of Power series started on Amazon I started watching.  I am embarrassed to say, having watched the last episode in season one last night (and having thought so throughout) I need to go back again and read and watch as I only just realized it is a prequel!  It is good and I hope it continues.

Brickfan50 Books!  Hardback books. Got 1974 Edition of "Red Book."  I have read LOTR about once a year since 1966, but now on ebook - miss the map that way tho.

Somewhat random but seeing somewhat original books and having seen trailers for the Tolkien film, was there every any indication that J.R.R Tolkien was actually inspired for his stories by things like German flamethrowers (fire breathing dragons), or Germans wearing medieval-like armour (knights on horseback) for example? Perhaps Middle Earth was a way for him to escape the horrors of the Great War?

@Brickchap Tolkein was an early medieval professor and a lot of his stories take inspiration from the tales and myths of the Saxons and Vikings. He was also a gifted linguist and the places names in the books show that was a heavy influence. Mordor had a lot of the inspiration taken from his time fighting during WW1 and its description really matches the experience of soldiers there. But there are no links to the technology that was used at time in his books. The dragons etc come from his love of myths and the medieval period.

If anybody needs White Brick profile bricks Element 6152409for their Minas Tirith....
#10291 is the place to get them, via sales, or via Lego Pick a Brick 12p each.
I keep hoping they will turn up on the PAB wall in stores....

I bought two copies of #10291 just to use for parts packs.  Both were bought on sale.  Love the profile bricks & random flesh tone body parts which is the only reason I even bought the set

I can't wait for this, I'm a big LOTR fan. I only have frodo and gandalf. Hopefully this is successful so more sets can be made

I just had a memory come back to mind where I sold #9470 Shelob Attacks from a bulk lot I got. I think I sold it for $40.

I'm positive I sold it for at or above the BL average at the time. Having no other LOTR sets then, nor really realizing the rarity, I didn't know any better. Now I wish I would have hung onto it (mostly for the figs).

I do agree that I hope we see a reemerging of this theme and some smaller sets as well.
