Trying to figure out....

I used to be able to get rid of the number that shows up in red next to my user name by clicking it and it would clear itself out. Has something changed to not let it do that anymore? I don't know why but me not being able to clear it is really messing with my OCD LOL :) Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated!!!
