Small vehicle sets

I'm pondering a birthday present for my godson that's basically "a Lego set a month" -- twelve small sets, to be opened at the rate of one per month. I'm thinking a $10 price point per set, although as long as the overall cost is $150 or less, some sets over or under are fine. Vehicles would probably be ideal.

Anyone have any ideas? Current sets or older sets that are still at roughly MSRP are fine. I've been wondering about maybe some Lego Racers sets, but I've never actually seen those sets.

That's a great idea. Without knowing the age of the godson, I might suggest going beyond just the vehicles and putting in some of the Monster Fighter sets. Giving him the Coffin Car and the Zombi Car one month (combined around $10) would be fun.

You don't even have to rely on polybags.

    4200 - Mining 4x4
    4427 - Fire ATV
    4436 - Police Car
    5882 - Ambush Attack
6858 - Catwoman Catcycle City Chase
    9461 - Swamp Creature
    9462 - The Mummy
    9469 - Gandalf Arrives

Toss on a few Star Wars sets and you're done. Heck, you could probably do it with a pick from Star Wars sets alone!

9488 - Elite Clone Trooper & Commando Droid
9489 - Endor Rebel Trooper & Imperial Trooper
    9490 - Droid Escape
    9491 - Geonosian Cannon

    9675 - Sebulba's Podracer & Tatooine
    9676 - TIE Interceptor & Death Star
    9677 - X-wing Starfighter & Yavin 4
    9678 - Twin-Pod Cloud Car & Bespin
    9679 - AT-ST & Endor
75001 - Republic Troopers vs. Sith Troopers
75002 - Clone Troopers vs. Droidekas
    75006 - Jedi Starfigher & Planet Kamino
    75007 - Republic Assault Ship
    75008 - TIE Bomber & Asteroid Field
    75009 - SnowSpeeder & Planet Hoth

The $6 Creator sets in little plastic boxes, I'm not sure what's out at the moment but there's been construction equipment, a fire truck, a plane. I think one has been on sale at LEGO stores recently and I've also seen them at Target and Walmart. We have some unopened, if you need one to be tested by an 8-year-old let me know, she'd be more than happy to help :).

You could also do what MBA did, and go for a set every other month. That would give you 6 sets at $20 (or a bit more).
You really end up with a much big selection of fun sets at that $20-$25 price range. It would mean fewer shipments for him, but sometimes fewer larger sets is more fun than a large number of small sets.
Age plays a factor as well.

He'll be four, so smaller works better than larger, I think -- if it's small he can build it mostly on his own.

there are new fire/police sets coming out in 2013 too. i remember seeing a fireman's motorcycle. you can see them here: http://www.brickset.com/browse/years/?year=2013&Theme=City

60000 and 60001 might be of particular interest.

What about a larger set that has several small builds in it, and give him one section at a time. I remember my sons' firestation had about 4 instruction booklets. Then he'd have a nice big set at the end of it.

There are 2 sets too with multiple builds, probably around the $10 mark but not by much which may be suitable. #4636 Police Building Set and also #4637 Safari Building Set. Both have cars but also other things too and great playability for little kids.

Also, on the lego website there alternative instructions to be downloaded.
