There has definitely been a reshuffle concerning the selling of exclusives. TRU claims 10211 is now their exclusive. Target is way off base on their pricing for 10211. Amazon is no longer re-ordering any exclusives. Something is certainly afoot and it is not just a case of retailers running out of supply following the holiday rush. Should be interesting.

Does amazon have anything at all on the no discount list?

over a thousand left of that one, if you believe the shopping cart (which I don't, in this case, I think that one is "fixed")
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
That is all I could find...

At this rate, by tomorrow, the SSD will be the only one left in stock...

Is it possible that they want exclusives to return to being "exclusive"?

Or maybe give each store one, TRU gets GE, maybe Amazon gets PS, Target gets TH, and Walmart gets PC?

Well I think the other thing is also how many are Amazon.com stocking with? Because many were listed as not available from Amazon that you note above previously.
Amazon may have just decided to not stock many since they cannot drop the price on them to clear out extra stock.
  • JeffHJeffH Member Posts: 173
^^ Well they do have 160 Joust in stock though, that should last for a while. ;)
  • TncatsfanTncatsfan Member Posts: 92
I'm a little confused. Do we think that Amazon is going to restock exclusives like tower of orthanc and ewok village or no? I was saving up card points for orthanc.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
Frankly, we have no idea... all we're doing is guessing...

It does seem like they are out of almost everything... Other than Joust (keep forgetting about that set) and SSD, they are out of everything...

Will they get any of it back? Who the heck knows...

I guess I'll wait a few months and keep saving them. That would suck if they don't sell them anymore.
  • BumblepantsBumblepants Member Posts: 7,634
Yesterday They had TH, PS, and PC in stock. PS had one left and promised more on the way. As soon as that one was gone and it reverted to third party the promise of more on the way was gone. So maybe that label only appears with regard to Amazon stock?
  • TncatsfanTncatsfan Member Posts: 92
Just found the tower of orthanc at my local target. It was clearance priced too, 175.00. Must have had an online order returned to store.

As long as someone did not buy it, open it and take out all of the figures, reseal and return back to the store.
It is possible that it was just a gift that someone decided they did not want, but I am always leery of some set that pop onto retail store shelves that were not sold there.
If you got it, opened it, and everything is there then that is a good find.

Just noticed that a number of exclusives are running low on Amazon and Amazon does not have the (more coming soon) message on any of them.

When I clicked through those links I found items being sold by Marketplace sellers, not directly by Amazon itself.

When I clicked your Arkham Asylum link and SSD link, I found items for sale by Amazon.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
^ Well yes, I posted those 2 days ago... :)

AA seems to have restocked since then, or they found a few in the warehouse, or a few were returned, or some of all of that.

SSD they seem to have tons of.
  • JeffHJeffH Member Posts: 173
OMG [email protected] is running 20% off sale for the 10197, except of course it was sold out a long time ago. :(
  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
well, assume some stores still may have stock on hand. but typical LEGO sale, they've done this kind of thing the last few years on EOL sets

They do it so that if anyone returns one in the next few months without a receipt, they can offer store credit for the lower amount.

They don't really intend to sell any at that price, it probably took this long because they were waiting for the stores to all sell out.
  • nkx1nkx1 Member Posts: 719
    ^If that's the case, that's a pretty under-handed tactic.

Pretty cynical to be honest. My guess is that if they have any left on shelves anywhere they want them gone so they can then remove them officially from the system.

They clearly intended to sell them at 30% discount in the UK, because that's precisely what they did.

I knew that. But if someone does return one and in theory I can grab it for that "lowered" price. It's a long shot but I did score a Maersk train set that way last year well after the EOL. ;)

^ I also go a Maersk that way last year at the ~85 price point, months after it was out of stock everywhere.

I also managed to pick up a 21050 a couple days ago that was returned by someone. full RRP, but hey, no brainer.

After all the stink about not discounting exclusives, Lego discounted their own Winter Village Cottage and Fire Brigade. At least that's what's shown at [email protected] Wonder what WalMart/Target/Amazon would think of that?

It just backs up the theory that once an exclusive set is EOL and retired that any sets could be discounted by the seller to get rid of any remaining stock.
  • bricktuarybricktuary Member Posts: 987
They discounted the b-wings too. Plus 10% off across the piece.

It took me an hour, but I'm now caught up. Unfortunately, the only two intetesting things to develop here since October were 1)No comments at all in November and 2)LFT's reference to the Imaginarium wooden railroad table. We got it for our son this Christmas and just love it. :o)

I too ended up skipping Black Friday at the Lego store. Anyone - how did it all work out?

Has this Discount moratorium extended beyond the U.S. market yet?
  • BastaBasta Member Posts: 1,259
Not so far, Target started a Buy2Get1free today. So #10225 R2-D2 & #10937 Arkham Asylum Breakout for $166.66 AUD ($146.66 USD).

    These both retail for $250AUD.

  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
It is odd to me that they haven't extended it, and I was wondering why since one of the memes must have heard 100 times in the first half of 2013 in regards to policy changes was a desire to be consistent across the globe, thus the move to AFOL day stickers through LUGs, the ending of convention discounts, the streamlining of discount percentages, etc. Seems odd that they wouldn't do the same here. It got me wondering if it might due to legal limitations on price-setting in other regions.

This week Star Wars exclusives as well as Arkham Asylum are a part of Toy's r US Canada buy one get one 50% off sale.
  • luckie_reubsluckie_reubs Member Posts: 299
I feel like I'm playing with fire by not buying Arkham Asylum, but I feel crazy for spending that much money on that set. It doesn't seem like one that would get EOLed anytime soon, but it also seems like one that won't ever get a steep discount. Seeing it's getting a sale in Canada, though, makes me a little nervous...
  • nkx1nkx1 Member Posts: 719
^There's only one solution. You're going to have to drive to Canada to get one. Best of luck!

Not much of a discount, but currently WM in the US has a $15 eGift card for #10937 Arkham Asylum
  • BrickarmorBrickarmor Member Posts: 1,258
^Thanks for letting us know anyhow. It's good info to have going forward. If they'll do $15, they may do $20, then maybe $30, etc...
  • ShouldavilleShouldaville Member Posts: 51
WM does also have a $40 card on Tower Bridge, $35 SSD & $30 Haunted House. Be careful as they are also listed without the gift card option (and the card option doesn't show on some searches).

^Nice finds there. You might also be able to save an additional 3.5 percent or so by buying a discounted Walmart gift card from various online vendors (I'm assuming you would still get the bonus gift card if you pay with a gift card). A Tower Bridge for $193 after $40 gift card is about a 20% discount. Not bad, assuming you shop at Walmart to be able to use the gift card.

I admit it; when it comes to buying Lego I'm a cheapskate. If it's a new set, I'd be waiting until it's at least a third off. If it's second hand I'd be looking for a bargain - preferably no box and a few pieces missing to keep the price down.

Which means the sets that are exclusive to the Lego stores (e.g. Tower of Orthanc, Simpson's House) are a particular problem for me. My dark ages ended not much more than a year ago, and in that time I don't remember seeing a Lego store sale across the board. So, am I waiting for something that will never happen, or will it be possible to get either of these two sets at less than RRP at some point?

I can only think of two scenarios:

    1. These sets become not-exclusive-to-Lego-store.
    2. These sets become discounted by Lego

    Is either possible?
  • jockosjunglejockosjungle Member Posts: 701
They do sales every so often, and I think both sets will stop being exclusives at some point, Simpsons is due to do that in May I think
  • alijoezacalijoezac Member Posts: 554
Orthanc is available at John Lewis - but no discount

Black Friday is a big day for sale at Lego.
(VIP members may get advance promo on Thursday).

Lego Catalog sometimes came with 10% off coupons.

    Use your Lego VIP points.
  • theLEGOmantheLEGOman Member Posts: 1,524
Simpsons house will be sold at Smyths and tru's but they are probably getting stock at a similar time as the figures, smyths list both as May 15th.
  • lordzaraklordzarak Member Posts: 329
Tower of Orthanc is already sold at other outlets, but it is categorized with other "Hard to Find" thus exempt from any retail promotions. This past February, it slipped though the cracks and was part of an online BOGO 40% off sale at Target. I think it lasted only a few hours.

Black Friday used to be a "big day" for sale at Lego. It hasn't been that since 2011.

I would not gamble with exclusives that I really want. They rarely go on sale and they could in fact sell out before you would have a chance to buy them. I would however try to buy they in the double VIP points period (which we just passed) which does end up being a nice discount.
  • cloaked7cloaked7 Member Posts: 1,448
Some stores (I think Target and Walmart?) have offered gift cards with some exclusive sets to get around the no discount policy. And, LEGO does so in the way of Ltd Ed sets with purchase. Not the same as a true discount and typically not used very often, but it's still a discount in my opinion.

I would look for the "VIP members may get advance promo on Thursday"(Black Friday) 3x VIP points if we are lucky and combine that with 5% off with shopdiscover and maybe a Ltd Ed set thrown in. I think that is about the best you will get.

I was in a similar situation and sold off the Simpsons house minifigures when they first came out because I did not particularly like the half closed eyes.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
TLG reserves the the right to change their policies at any time. Until then, you need to get creative with your discounts. BOGO's, gift cards, cash back, Double and Triple VIP points and possibly getting an exclusive poly with a purchase and selling it, thus creating your own discount.

Lego is an expensive hobby, so many of us try to do our best to get whatever discounts we can.

How are Lego able to dictate how stores price 'Hard to Find' items, when that sort of behaviour is, in many countries, illegal?
