Plenty of 'buy it now' minifigures priced at more than the RRP of the current set that includes them. Also plenty of PDF instructions for sale when you can download them for free from TLG. I'm assuming people don't actually buy these?

Maybe they sell to people who aren't AFOLs (or like a bit of Lego but wouldn't call themselves AFOLs, aren't aware of online resources etc.) - otherwise it's hard to imagine why someone would spend money on a PDF... that, and people mistaking listings for PDF instructions for listings for the physical booklets.

^^^I must admit that when came out of my dark ages I had no clue as to the amount of resources for Lego fans. I purchased so many sets on E-bay for ridiculous prices. I had no Idea what to do if I lost pieces. I called Lego CS one time about two pcs I lost for a set and had a whole story for it, the nice fellow on the other side sent me the pcs free of charge.

I only found out about Brickset because a Lego employee tangentially referred to it while we were chit-chatting when I called to place an order (even the old site did not work well for me). I only just learned how invaluable resource Brickset was when I purchased a large lot and had to use all of it's resources.

The forum is a whole different animal. Mostly reading other peoples conversations has really matured me as a buyer/collector. So yeah I can see how an AFOL an be naive and purchase some dubious things.

I originally came to this thread to question some listings I've seen regarding the Death Star. Several bits of vodka and Pitfall's post make me feel as though my thoughts are trivial in light of the tragedy's that seem to occur on a daily basis...

No minifigures (unless you really don't want them)
Box only (unless you actually only wanted the box)
Fits LEGO (run to the hills)
Includes free LEGO piece (keep running)
Stock photo - may be missing some parts (run faster)

@xwingpilot I use stock photos all the time, that's just because I'm too lazy to be bothered to take my own. ha ha.

I am not stupid or dumb .. I know what I want - what I am willing to pay .. and could care less if it bothers other potential bidders that I have put in my top dollar amount - you can bid it up to find out what that is .. or you can go on to another item...

I think that's fine for new sets but I would personally want to see the actual item I was buying if it was used, especially where the smallprint says "may be missing some parts". I imagine being sent a single brick after being shown a stock photo of a UCS set :)

I never use stock photos as my main photo unless I am selling multiples of the same set and every box is exactly the same, which is a rarity. One example would be all the MMV's I have been selling; every box had a defect and the defects were all different.
