Is it that unusual to describe something as a "NISB copy" of a set? Just got the most peculiar email about one of my listings.

"Hello! Thinking about buying this but wanted to make sure before ordering. The way the description is worded... "This listing is for a NISB copy of LEGO set xxxx" making sure what was meant by "copy" this is an original, like i'd walk into Walmart and purchase, correct? Thanks so much! Sorry to be annoying, but thought better to make sure."

Is ebay that fraught with trickery I should be exercising this level of caution now?

I think they were just wondering if it was Genuine LEGO since you said copy. Which could also be taken clone, counterfeit copy et cetera....
Unfortuneatly, ebay is filled with fakes and copy cats. So IMO it was wise for that buyer to question your listing @iccarus‌.

Ugh, I hate super picky buyers who expect perfect boxes when one has not been offered. How anyone expects an 8lb set to make it halfway across the US without some cosmetic issues is beyond me, especially when it was noted as having wear in the listing to begin with.

Anybody have a good track record with dealing with frivolous "not as described" claims on sets? He sent me pics, which show a few minor scratches in the glossy finish, some pulling on the tape seals (it's a modular, and that's pretty common in my experience), and a light pressure crease along the front of the box that's about 6-8 inches long. I offered him a 5% refund on the purchase price (I feel bad about the crease). I'm trying to brace myself in the event the buyer gets greedy.

Call their bluff, offer to pay the return postage and tell them to return it. If they want it, they'll back down. If they intended to build it, there is always the chance that they damaged it themselves to try and get a refund. I prefer to take the hit on postage rather than let someone win. Personal preference and not for everyone but it takes the haggling out of the situation.

I would agree with joelmotion. Have him send it back. If he is going to build it, it shouldn't matter and I am picky about my boxes not sure why. There is a guy where I live who always advertise on Craig's list about the grade of his boxes, but it is not professionally graded. If yours wasnt graded and sealed I would think it should be good.

Set was listed as excellent with minor shelf wear, which I think covers all of the "damage" he brought up. I never list my sets as having mint boxes since that's virtually impossible, especially with larger sets. This is the first complaint about box condition I've ever had in almost three years. I personally keep all my boxes, but I never expect any set that retails for over $100 to have a perfect box. They are just way too large and prone to nicks and bumps.

I just don't get why someone who wants a perfect box, when one isn't even advertised, would not bother to ask questions first. Most people who use condition as a selling point make it pretty clear in the listing. If you're picky about condition wouldn't you make that pretty clear before dropping $300+ on a purchase?

If there are any issues with a box, I always take pictures and use them in my post. I also never list the condition of my boxes because everyone's opinions on box condition are different.

Back on the off topic, I agree with @joel4motion‌ principled with a cost approach or be pragmatic and work out the cost to you of any refunds and getting back a more damaged box. Both make sense.

Blech, going to just eat the postage cost and have him return it. Not worth the hassle of arguing when I should be able to still sell the set to a builder for about the same cost. I guess if I wait another year it should offset the losses from this fiasco.

I'm just going to start putting a disclaimer in all auctions that clearly spells out my general condition guidelines. I hate the idea of having to note every imperfection on a cardboard box, but I guess that will help scare away buyers like this to begin with.

We have someone posting on our own club forum (not one of our members) trying to sell various used lots of LEGO. At first they tried to sell lots with no picture and just a general description (doors, blue slopes etc). We told them pictures or no one is going to bid. Well, they took pictures of everything bagged and provided a just part list of numbers (with no quantities). To top this off they messaged quite a few members privately asking if they were interested in buying it.
