Thanks for the compliments.
Si - that piece would have been the obvious solution but, as you say, it doesn't come in the correct colour. I messed about with different options but finally settled on this one. It was the best of the bunch. It has the advantage of giving a little more width to the bottom roof layer. It is only two studs but it does make a difference. Using the piece you suggest would mean both the bottom and middle roof layers would be exactly the same width.
But, TBH, if the piece you suggested was available it would probably be better.
Short_Round - I don't know! He is star wars, i think he came in a "hoth" themed magnet set - yep, just checked - 853130. It seems to be a set based on the clone wars cartoon so the character must come from that.
Bob.
@Short_Round The characters name is Thi-Sen and its from the Clone Wars animated series. He lives on an icy planet and is covered in fur so he probably wouldn't last long on Tattooiene. Comes in set #8085 Freeco speeder and a magnet set.
@Poochy The parts in the model itself are about 90% original from the three sets. If I recall correctly the extra 10% were mostly small bricks - 1x1, 1x2 etc. and small plates - 1x2, 1x4, 2x4, 2x6.
I did use some extra slopes to build the roof, but I tried to only use more of the same as is already in the set. I used about a dozen extra 2x2x3 dark tan slopes, about two dozen extra 1x2x1 dark tan slopes, a couple extra 1x2x3 sand slopes and a couple of extra arch pieces.
I'm confident that a good version of this could be built using only the pieces in the sets.
I was very surprised at how many pieces I have left over. I estimate I only used about 65% of the pieces from the three sets.
If you or anybody else want a more detailed breakdown of how this is built I would be happy to oblige.

Excellent Palace. Wish I could afford to purchase doubles of sets to do this kind of thing... but there's always something else i'd really like too, so I tend to settle for the one in order to buy that 'new set', even though I know something amazing could be made.
It's great to see when somebody has taken the plunge on a second set and created something so great like this.
Before Christmas my lovely wife got me Jabba's Palace and the Millenium Falcon. As it was "three for the price of two" I told her to get an extra Palace (the cheaper of the two). I offered it for trade or sale on here but there were no takers. I was going to put it on ebay.
My birthday was in February. My wife asked what Lego I would like. As we were so skint I told her not to bother. Lego is my passion. It is the only gift I get (want!), but it is a luxury. I didn't want her to go without so as to get me the Haunted House or something. A few days before my birthday I remembered about the extra Palace. I told her that could be my present.
The original palace build bothered me more than any other Lego set. In my opinion it had a couple of serious flaws -
1, too small
2, too enclosed/dark
3, the floating tower
4, the unopenable gate
I realised with a second set I could maybe resolve these issues.
I'm really happy that It worked out as it did. I'm the same as you. I don't get multiples. But this build lasted over five weeks instead of the usual couple of hours. I lost count how many times I built, took apart and rebuilt this Palace.
It was my most frustrating but also most satisfying Lego build yet. And it only happened because I couldn't afford a set I wanted!

I must give my dream moc projects a serious go soon.
