Oh they did. My brothers had a few of that same set. There were like 732 Aquanauts sets to 2 or 3 Aquasharks sets. So to build up the sharks they had to get that small set a few times. Aquazone was a great theme by the way.
Puzzled by a few bits that I cannot identify from which kit they came, anyone have any suggestions?
and the pic posted by @DeMontes seems to match yours...
Possible sets #7894 or #3182
I love this thread but you guys reply too damn fast! :-)
Here is the list on BrickLink:

For example, the 4x4 dark blue wedge on the arm piece of the left most model. You can search, 4x4 wedge. You could then either look through the decorated parts, or simply go into the part itself, look at the sets it comes in, scroll down to Dark Blue, and look through the photos. I was able to find set #8103 in a matter for probably 30 seconds or less.
Usually searching for parts with stickers, unique colors, or unique parts is a quick way to run your searches.
Maybe just some quick tips/tricks for you. I always enjoy searching for parts/sets for people, so I don't mind so much. But you may be able to find some answers pretty quickly.
For the one on the left:
There wasn't a super unique part on this one, so I went with a more rare color. In this case, Dark Red. I searched Bricklink for 2x2 Tile, moved over to "Appears In" and see it listed in about 2400 sets. I did Ctrl-F and searched for Dark Red. I then looked over the pictures for a yellow car as there are quite a few sets with Dark Red 2x2 Tiles. A quick search showed #4949 as the only yellow car.
For the one on the right:
The piece that most stands out to me is the wheel. I searched "Wagon Wheel" on Bricklink. The wheel in your photo has 10 spokes. By looking at the pictures on Bricklink, I see that this is Wheel Wagon Huge (43mm D.). I clicked on that one, then went to "Appears In" and there are only 14 sets. I scrolled to the "Pearl Light Gray" and reduced that 14 sets to 2 sets. Then, after looking at the two possible sets, I saw the carriage matches the picture for #7092.
It took me a lot of time and practice to refine my search processes, but usually can find most parts/sets now in a matter of a minute or less. Sometimes there are tricky ones that take longer. In bulk lots, you'll find sub-assemblies that you think are from a set, but were actually just bits and pieces the previous owner had put together. Those can be tough. But, keep at it and you'll be quick in no time!
