did anyone else have an issue with the cockpit not rotating automatically like the original set did? i mean, the new colored treads are just to manually rotate it it would seem. still, it looks cool, but it's out of my price range due to me not being a hardcore Star Wars fan.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
No, it is a display model, not a play set, so that doesn't bother me.

My grip is about the price. :)

If you watch the video closely you'll see the treads don't actually rotate. They are on the fixed part off the cockpit assembly. But I agree that it does not seem to self-rotate...you have to do it yourself.

I agree with legofantexas, this is a display model. Lack of a minifigure in the cockpit or playability is a total non-factor for me with sets of this type. It's supposed to be a big, impressive, static display model. I don't have a problem with that.

Actually got to pick up and hold the new B-Wing starfighter today at Brick Fiesta in Houston! Such an awesome model, larger than the pics look - it actually looks like a studio scale model. Very cool, I will be adding this one to my collection!
Is the orange circle a sticker or printed?

    What is studio scale?

What is the term used for the scale of MF #7965? The other scales for it are micro, mini, midi, ?, UCS.

Who swooshed their UCS sets? I thought they were for display only. They get assembled and then put on a shelf to look purdy...
  • mathewmathew Member Posts: 2,099
Yeah, I just don't get it then. What fun is it to have a ship that you can't swoosh around the room every once in awhile? $200 is kind of a joke for this set.

Because we are adults, if it was $300 I would still buy it, it's not about the price thats not a factor when I'm buying collector sets and no I am I poor student.

Thing is, I checked last night on a cash converter, and the actual cost in the Uk would be £113, not almost £200

@richo Oh hmm well there weren't not too few double non-positives in that last sentence. Not. Erm.

No, seriously, people. Lego has a reputation for their heavy focus-group testing. I'm quite sure they didn't pick the B-Wing on pure whim. It will sell.

Well uh, haven't there already been some themes - and of course individual products within a theme - that didn't sell well and thus were quite short-lived? So it's not like their testing is 100% sure to result in best sellers all the way. Of course one would think that for a UCS set the focus-group testing would've been more thorough than for a normal set, but even so.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
No amount of testing is ever a sure-thing. Every company has dud products, that doesn't make the company bad, it just means they have to throw enough stuff against the wall to get the right amount to stick to be profitable.

The trick is to keep the duds and mistakes to a minimum, make the winners as big as you can, and keep costs under control.

"Studio Scale" is not a Lego term but a more general movie/sci fi term referencing the actual size of a model filmed during the production of a movie.

Therefore, "studio scale" can be ANY scale, depending on what scale model was actually used and filmed to make movie X.

Even on the first Star Wars movie, the various filmed models varied in scale, and even some of the different models of the same vehicle were constructed in different scales with bigger models for closeups and the like.

As a rule "studio scale" means "big", as usually the models used for filming tend to be quite large in order to show off detail and have a realistic look.

In theory, 7965 is "minifigure scale" as Lego has designed the kit to accomodate minifigures. Of course, the size of the ship is nowhere close to being large enough to accept minifigures in a properly scaled manner. That set is probably the best of all the "normal" MFs ever designed, but it is still a massively out of scale and proportion play set for kids.

    I know, I have it!
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
7965 isn't close to being mini fig scale, fitting minifigs in something doesn't make it minifig scale, after all, 6211 is playable with figs and obviously isn't to scale.

7965 is, what... Less than half the size of 10179? 10179 is true minifig scale, but oddly enough has no interior to actually play with, which is a shame.

^^Thanks so much clarifying 'studio scale' @ringleheim.

I was hoping 7965's scale had a nice clean type to it, like 'maxi' or something that fits after 'midi'. I also have it right next to me, on display next to the comp. I really like this size as a playset though, since its big enough to recreate different interior scenes (lacking as @LFT said, but easily MOC'able) with all the given figs. But swooshable and lightweight, it is not.

IMO The B-Wing is probably one of the more obscure SW ships and, while interesting, really lacks a wow factor. For $200 I will pass on this set for now and wait for a sale.
  • CaptAPJTCaptAPJT Member Posts: 223
I guess it's one of those things that is popular on suggestion but struggles when people have to "put their money where their mouth is." I assume the same was true of 10215 which had a lot of screen time (including some cool scenes) but just didn't seem to be good value for money despite being a great model.
As for the cockpit not "autorotating" I imagine it's got a construction like the original B-Wing and will probably hang horizontally by gravity. It's a lot of money but I'll be snapping one up for my UCS collection along with R2 on the next double points promotion.

Still several UCS creations I'd like to see not to mention re-releases of some of the now more sought after discontinued lines. Just need to make space for it all in my spare room!
  • princedravenprincedraven Member Posts: 3,764
I think the design is nice and I am not surprised about the price at all.
I am a mad SW fan, but have never been that impressed with the B-Wing so maybe that is the main reason, but my big issue with this.... I just cannot see me ever wanting it on display (what UCS sets are all about).
So many of the SW sets look amazing on display, but this just doesn't do it for me at all, and I can imagine 90+% of people who visit would go "what on earth is that?", rather than "wow, how cool is that" for e.g. the Shuttle.
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275

I know this is coming from a single guy so it doesn't have "wife" opinions added in, but I don't decorate my house for the visitors, I decorate for me. I think the B-wing model is really well done and while it doesn't have the "wow" factor that the IS or some of the others have it still looks really cool. I took my #7965 MF off of it's place on top of one of my stereo speakers last night and just sat on the couch with it flipping up doors etc and looking at the elements in it and it isn't even that exciting of a model compared to the UCS MF. I could totally see picking up the B-wing every now and then to sit and check out the detail.

^ that image appears to be a render and not an actual box so it's likely they aren't done. I'd be surprised if they didn't put the UCS marking on it.

It wasnt on the SSD or R2 so i wouldnt be suprised if it wasnt, just makes it look like a regular Star wars set, i want to feel like im getting something collectible when i buy these sets :P
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
^ I never noticed it wasnt on those two. I bought both and just stuck them in the pile of other stuff I've bought but wont be building for a while.

If so, I think TLG needs to take another look at the Marketing dept. and ask the reasoning behind abandoning a valued 'mark' such as UCS.
  • timinchicagotiminchicago Member Posts: 239
In looking back at several of the UCS sets, it seems that about half of them do not have any branding of "Ultimate Collectors Series" on the box. I know my 10175 does not mention it.

last set to use the ultimate collectors branding was 10179

Shame on Lego if UCS is no more:(
  • BanditBandit Member Posts: 889
However, while not on the box, Lego uses the term 'Ultimate Collector Series' in the marketing description text for R2-D2, the B-Wing, and the Imperial Shuttle ('Ultimate Collector's model' for the IS). Interestingly enough, they do not for the SSD.

  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639
^I don't have the box in front of me, but how about 10215? One would think that with 5 sets currently (IS, SSD, R2D2, Obi Wan, and incoming B-Wing) that TLG would recognize the potential sales possible if they did a concentrated and heavy campaign for UCS. Something like a huge marketing splash at SD Comic-Con revolving around the UCS sets would get attention from fans unaware of Lego's offerings.

For other non-SW sets with the UCS plaque (Dreamliner and VW Beetle), was there ever any mention of them being "Ultimate" something grade? Whether on the box or promo materials?
  • BanditBandit Member Posts: 889
^ yes, 10215 was marketed as "Ultimate Collector's Series" in its marketing description as well. Nothing on the box as far as I know.
  • Brick_ObsessionBrick_Obsession Member Posts: 656
Have there been other sets out there that came with the plaque (sticker at the base) that were not UCS? As I have not opened up all my sets yet I am not sure.

I thought that was one tell tale for the UCS sets was that they all were "plaqued"
  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639

@Brick_Obsession, it's only been #10177 and #10187 that has the plaque and non-UCS status, but then again they're the only non-SW sets that has them as far as I know. But the #10188 UCS/non-UCS debate comes into play also.

@Bandit thanks for the confirmation. Just looking at UCS MF and it has "Ultimate Collector's" listed on front where set name is and nicely done on the back in special font for the back. Also a nice little emblem for 'Certified First Editions' That's how it should be done for all UCS sets. For as much as we pay, they should come with the extra ink.

220 euros for Finland... dream on, LEGO. I'd rather buy two more Medieval Market Villages from Amazon for that price to get some extra houses for my Kingdoms diorama.

Says the guy who has the ultimate AT-AT. ;)

BTW, when are you going to publish building instructions for that? I would be happy to pay a reasonable fee to get those, it is one of those rare MOC projects that I'd take on.

I've read somewhere that the exchange rate for the pound and euro is higher than the dollar, but somehow the buying power of the American dollar still can't be beat.

Just out of curiosity, how many quid or euros does a bottle of Coke (20 oz - 591ml), loaf of sliced sandwich bread, or other commonly purchased good cost over there? I doubt we'll solve the price discrepancy dispute, but I'd still be interested to find out.

For B-Wing? Wow... that sounds pricy... But then isn't SSD like $700 AU there?

I'll be happy to buy and ship at cost a B-Wing to any Aussies here on the forum when it comes out. Or a SSD for that matter, I have one of those spare in the closet if anyone in Australia wants one at cost.
  • effalconeffalcon Member Posts: 71
Yeah, SSD & Deathstar are those kinda dollars.

its so all over the place, Town Hall was 250AU vs 200US, then increased to 300 after a few months.

R2D2 is $250AU vs $180US so go figure.

I might take you up on that offer once the B-Wing is available.. need to get my hands on a death star too.
