Where's the gold?!?!

I just purchased two Pirates of the Carribean sets 4192 & 4181. I was very dissapointed to find out that the gold coins and bars were not the shiny ones they picture, but rather the dull "gold" color. I was really looking forward to the gold bars, especially, being like the gold coins that used to be in the divers sets, among others. I noticed that no one else has mentioned this either here or in the product reviews. Is anyone else dissapointed?

It would have been nice but I can deal with the pearl gold pieces(or whatever color they are).

I'm pretty disappointed. I bought the london escape and the gold coins and gold bar was definitely a big draw for me. I did read a review on classic pirates that mentioned it wasn't shinny but in person I think they look WAY worse. They have nasty mold studs on one side and random holes on the other, I don't see why they couldn't just use the gold pieces from the pirates line.

I've been disappointed since the Collectable Pharaoh fig's staff was that dull gold. In the picture of the figure (not the cartoon one), it's shiny (not chrome) but a nice shiny luster. The headdress had the shine on it but they didn't put in on the staff and I thought for Lego, a quality product, that's wrong to do. But some people defended it at the time, so now I'm glad to see people sayin', hey, this is wrong. If this is the way they play it, might as well doctor the whole image on the package.

Ah, well then you can just pretend that the dubloons have just gotten all tarnished and barnacle-y from being underwater for so long!

Or just bust out the spray-paint. I have no problem with cutting or spraying if it simply creates a standard piece that lego *could* have made.
  • thesinisterpenguinthesinisterpenguin Member Posts: 96
Yes, disappointed, but I had seen that they weren't chrome before I bought the sets. It would have been nice if they had stayed true to the box art - it feels like a bit of a lie!
  • brickmaticbrickmatic Member Posts: 1,071
Ah, see I think that in the case of Isla de la Muerta the image was deceptive and inappropriate, but in the case of Collectible Pharaoh the image was fine. This is because the image of Isla de la Muerta is a photo and it clearly looks like they used a chrome piece in the photo. The Collectible Pharaoh is a CGI render. I don't expect the CGI render to be 100% faithful to the final product. For instance, I don't expect the legs apart stance but normal minifig legs.
  • legoDadlegoDad Member Posts: 529
^Nope..it wasn't the CGI...they had the figure in ads with the shine, nice pearl gold staff. It matched the shine on the Pharaoh's headdress. But in the package you got the dull gold staff.
  • brickmaticbrickmatic Member Posts: 1,071
^ Here is the set image that I am looking at. What are you talking about?
  • legoDadlegoDad Member Posts: 529
This image...where they are shown as the actual figues with the stands and the accessories. Notice the headress sheen and shine and the Pharaoh's staff. Nice shine/sheen. But when you get the fig...the headdress has the shine but the staff is the dull gold. I was disappointed.

Hmm... good point. I agree that is deceiving.

You know, now that we're on to the topic of discrepancy between box art and actual set, there is one thing that bugs me quite a bit. The tap piece that is often used the represent a spout through which fluid things are dispensed has undergone a change in recent times that filled in the hole at the tip. It bugs me because it looked so much better with the indentation. However, it bugs me more that every new set that contains the filled-in-hole piece features the old style piece on the box art.

Most of the sets that i get that have gold on it, it is that not-so-shiny gold.
  • otterotter Member Posts: 12
Yeah, the gold bar is pretty much the biggest reason I want to, and probably will, buy the set. Such a shame.

I emailed them about the gold, and they emailed back in a couple days. Pretty cool

Besides the gold, there have been other instances where the picture does not match the set. Set 7623 Shows a white propeller motor and white struts on the wings of the air plane. When I complained to TLG, they actually sent me the correct color parts to make it look like the box image. They rock!
  • MatthewMatthew Administrator Posts: 3,714
They sent me an extra Policeman when I complained about there being 2 in the set and 3 on the picture of the latest Police Boat.

I too was disappointed by the lack of shiny gold in the sets but I was more disappointed with the cyborg from series 3 collectable minifigs. The promotional images showed shiny silver leg and arm but in reality they weren't at all.
  • colethegeekcolethegeek Member Posts: 12
I heard that the reason for the switch is the high cost to TLG to produce the old style coins with the plating. The pearl version must be their way of trying to still give us the piece but without the high cost.

I think the biggest disappointment was getting the King's Carriage Ambush (7188) and not getting a single coin for the chest, not even the new pearl version. Instead, I got pearl gold colored studs! Seriously? Granted, I was quite thrilled about the other pieces in that same color (slopes, wheels and a few others) and the printing on the horses.... but I certainly would rather get the non-shiny coins than studs to represent them.

So the real question is: would you be willing to pay more for a set in order to get shiny coins and gold bars?
  • yys4uyys4u Member Posts: 1,093
Speaking of the King's carriage Ambush,
I was just at TRU today to buy the Blacksmith Attack, and noticed they also had the windmill set. The box of that set had shinny gold coins pictured, I even saw numbers like 10, 30, implying their the old gold coins from the classic pirate line (10, 20, 30, 40). Can anyone confirm they are actual shinny coins or has anyone seen a review discussing this?
  • sidersddsidersdd Member Posts: 2,432
Yes, the Mill Village Raid set has chromed coins. Check out the inventory on Bricklink:
    http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?S=7189-1

Dunno why they did chrome coins here but not with PotC.
  • yys4uyys4u Member Posts: 1,093
Alright guys check this! I mentioned a couple posts back about how I emailed TLG group complaining about the lack of shinny gold, well before I emailed complaining, I accidentally emailed requesting new pieces, thinking at some point I would be promoted to describe my problem and that's where I was going to express my discontent with the pearl gold.

Well basically when I emailed them complaining about the gold, I started my email with something to the affect "please ignore my previous request for missing pieces" but nevertheless they sent me and email saying the new pieces were on their way. I figured Oh well, can't stop them now, thinking the 2 emails were sent to different departments.

Well Today I got the gold in the mail and guess what,

    ITS SHINNY!!!

They sent 4 SHINNY gold coins, marked on one side with LEGO and the other side says 1, 2, 5, and 10. I don't know about the rest of you, but I've never seen a LEGO SHINNY gold coin with the numbers 1 2 or 5. I'm really excited! And the best part is, the sent a GOLD BAR that's also shinny!

Lego customer service is the BEST!

Something I found odd was this review on Eurobricks:
    http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=54306

The coins in the review are shiny (in fact they are the old style ones), contrary to my own experience and that of the other people on here. The bars, however, were pearl gold.

^Your coins are apparently the new style coins, not the old ones, since the old ones were marked 10, 20, 30, and 40. Since the bars are also proper gold, perhaps the pearl gold ones were a production error.

@yys4u - can you provide photos?
  • yys4uyys4u Member Posts: 1,093
I'm pretty computer illiterate but I'll try at some point tonight.

@yys4u - The saying goes, "Without pictures...it didn't happen." Seriously, would love to see what customer service sent you.
  • thesinisterpenguinthesinisterpenguin Member Posts: 96
Very interesting! I would love to get shiny coins for the set!
  • wander099wander099 Member Posts: 114
I would also like to see these shiny coins and bars. I intend to buy some of the POTC sets and if they include pearl coins/bars, it might be worth my time to complain to get the shiny versions...
  • yys4uyys4u Member Posts: 1,093
I didn't have anything to take a proper picture at the moment, so I just tried to angle my laptops web cam to take it. You cant see any details but you can still see how its shinny, I'll upload a proper picture when I get something to transfer my cameras memory to my comp
  • thesinisterpenguinthesinisterpenguin Member Posts: 96
Very nice and shiny! I might have to pass on my disappointment about the pearl gold too..
  • pookiepookie Member Posts: 158
I also just sent in a complaint with Lego customer service about the non shinny coins and bar in the POC set. So far no word from Lego. I wonder if they are going to send everyone who complains gold plated coins and bars?
  • brickmaticbrickmatic Member Posts: 1,071
^ I think they are going to correct the issue for sets that are yet to be produced.

^ Well that is good news. Perhaps by the time I buy I will get the shiny coins and bars. If not, I'll give them a call and complain. I find I am more successful with customer service if I call as opposed to email.

@yys4u: can you let us know if there is any identifying part number on the service pack bag so that we can request it specifically?
  • MatthewMatthew Administrator Posts: 3,714
If it's the same as most of the time it will just be a general zip lock bag that they use for any replacement parts.
  • rocaorocao Administrator Posts: 4,290
Yeah, I noticed the ziplock after I posted, so you're right, that's probably the case.

Received my gold today, but only coins were included. The letter stated they currently do not make the gold bars in metallic gold. Anyone in the U.S. receive a service pack with metallic bars?
  • MatthewMatthew Administrator Posts: 3,714
I would send them this link, and see what they say http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=55426

I asked for the gold bars for my Isla de Muerta last week, got an envelope from Lego in the post this morning - all I got were the standard 4 coins (10, 20, 30, 40) joined at the middle. :(

It's amazing what an air brush can do to pictures these days, If you spend enough time in photoshop you can even make pete docherty look almost human.=o
  • RogueRogue Member Posts: 27
On the plus side, you could always make a custom Paula Deen minifig and use the pearl bars as sticks of butter? Eh? Eh?? ;)
  • yys4uyys4u Member Posts: 1,093
I hope I started all this! haha there a couple sites now that are reporting getting the gold bars. I want to go buy another set and complain again just to stock up on the chrome gold bars, they're awesome. Strange why some people keep getting 10, 20, 30, 40 and others like myself got 1, 2, 5, etc.
  • thesinisterpenguinthesinisterpenguin Member Posts: 96
I received my replacements today - I got one sealed bag of 1, 2, 5, 10 with a gold bar, and a loose sprue of 10, 20, 30, 40 coins. The gold bar is awesome though! Well worth the effort.
  • atkinsaratkinsar Member Posts: 4,258
I think I will need to open mine tonight so that I can confirm what type I got and then complain if necessary.
  • drdavewatforddrdavewatford Administrator Posts: 6,753
^ Not sure I can bear to open 8 MISB sets just to check this....! Problem is, if and when I do eventually get round to opening and building some of these I think the opportunity to get the issue rectified will probably have passed.
  • yys4uyys4u Member Posts: 1,093
^just pretend like you did open them and complain. Its not like TLG will know whether or not you've opened them....unless they're reading this right now O_o
  • brickmaticbrickmatic Member Posts: 1,071
^^ In the future, the pearl bars will be rare items. Just a thought.

    Dear Lego,
Dave Watford from the UK has not opened and verified all of his gold pieces.
