As the title states.

Me? I think that the high end SW range would sell very well in the May the Fourth promotion.

Anyone else?

I think we need to tweak this but I can't figure out what you're asking. Can you elaborate?

I'd like to see everything on sale! I'll be buying a UCS R2 but it'll be brand new, no chance of a discount. Will also get a Y-Wing, slim chance of a discount as its a 2012 set. Will get a DS for my nephew so he doesn't miss out if it's discounted and assume EOL.

Somewhat selfishly I'm hoping the discounts aren't very good so I won't be tempted....
  • luckyrussluckyruss Member Posts: 872
The SSD - I haven't got round to getting one yet. A decent discount and a TC-14 saves the debate about how many Y-wings to get.

Im hoping against hope that the ds lasts til next month. But if it could 100 quid i would be of course dreaming and then have to wake up

Would be nice if some of the clone wars sets will come down. I think the night sister bike and nabbo fighter
  • monkeyhangermonkeyhanger Member Posts: 3,161
Luckyruss: How big a discount? I'd pay £150 for one - I think the standard Star Destroyer is a much better looking ship. Don't think i'll ever see one for that price,
  • mr_bennmr_benn Member Posts: 941
Last year there was a 10% discount on the Death Star, and there was some decent offer on Tantive IV if I recall (whatever the offer was I know I got one!)... will be interesting to see what they do have this year, hope it's not just a bunch of the olde stuffe!
  • BumblepantsBumblepants Member Posts: 7,540
If the DS is on sale at all I will spring for one, if not, probably the new R2
  • luckyrussluckyruss Member Posts: 872
@monkeyhanger, I was thinking at 20%, with free postage, VIP points etc was realistically about as good as I could hope for, but obviously wouldn't reject it with more off! That'd effectively make it about £250.

@mr_benn, I think they had 10% off the DS earlier this year too.
  • JenniJenni Member Posts: 1,390
I would like to have on sale the clone wars sets that have the minifigures my daughter wants, but will probably just get R2D2.
  • hoyatableshoyatables Member Posts: 873
I'd love a little more than 10% off on the DS - you can get 10% at any time with double VIP or the 10% off coupon. Best case scenario would be 20% off or 10% + Double VIP points. That would probably get me to pull the trigger.

Speaking of discounts - if LEGO does discount the Death Star itself, would Amazon match? Or does Amazon only match Walmart, Target, etc?

Last year, if I remember correctly, the DS was not on sale at all, or at least in the US. Also, the Tantive IV was on sale for $125 along with an ARF Shadow Trooper and free shipping. Overall that was a good deal considering the ARF Shadow Trooper was worth $25 alone in the secondary market.

Personally I hope either 7879 Hoth Echo Base or 7962 Anakin Skywalker and Sebulba's Podracers go on sale, but I doubt it since they were released not even a year ago :(.

UCS R2 for me.........and a couple of Y wings, that's if i can sneak them past the wife!

IMO there might be a good saving on Lukes Landspeeder, must be EOL soon! if so will try bag a couple as well, is nice that George Lucas planned star wars so soon after pay day!
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
DS was 10% off, along with everything else, on Black Friday...
  • gollumgollum Member Posts: 10
I hope the discount is more than 10%, only because I live in California and the 8-9% sales tax (depending on the county) effectively kills any sales for me.
  • doriansdaddoriansdad Member Posts: 1,337
I am guessing the Imperial Shuttle and maybe some older sets such as V-Wing, Naboo set, Gen Griev. Starfighter etc. Certainly nothing spectacular. Hopefully they give the promo fig and free shipping to non star-wars sets again this year.....that would be a somewhat good deal.

Anything involving the Super Star Destroyer and I'm there. I've already got $20 in VIP points saved up for it, and I've been meaning to buy it as a promotion gift to myself. Fun Fact: this will technically be the second SSD I purchase, as I bought a $400 gift card to the Lego Store for my best friend's birthday, KNOWING he was going to spend it on that set.

See my post on TC-14 thread for UK buyers, just got a postcard from TLG.

Must spend £50 on SW to get TC-14.
£50 spend on anything gets you free shipping
Any SW spend of any size gets you a UCS R2D2 poster and polybag tie fighter.

All of the above are per order basis, so multiple qualifying orders get multiple freebies.

No mention of double VIP points, but it says some SW sets will be on sale (doesn't tell you what they will be).

my guess on discounts is a 10%-15% discount on the SSD. Nothing on the Death Star I dont reckon.
  • BumblepantsBumblepants Member Posts: 7,540
In the past have they put some sets on sale for the 4th and others for the 5th or do they do everything for both days?
  • samiam391samiam391 Member Posts: 4,487
If memory serves me right, it's the same sale for both days. But my memory isn't the most trustworthy lad.

I went to the Lego store yesterday and got an official postcard sized flyer of the May 4th event.

The sale usually has the same sets on sale for both days.. I think they put more up during the second day. In any case, just keep checking their site.
and I REALLY doubt they are going to put the SDD specifically on sale, it just came out.. It makes more sense to discount the DS.. especially if they are going to be EOLing it (and in any case Im guessing it will be EOL before SSD)
  • BumblepantsBumblepants Member Posts: 7,540
Ok cool. I just didn't want to compromise on day 1 and then wake up on day 2 and find what I really wanted on sale after I spend all my Lego monies.
  • monkeyhangermonkeyhanger Member Posts: 3,161
Doesn't make sense to discount the SSD due to its age unless it isn't selling well, or they're discounting everything (highly unlikely). If anything is ripe for a discount due to EOL in the UCS range then it'll be the IS and DS, based on age.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
Yes, but why discount DS when it is selling so well as it is?

Would a good discount be nice? Sure... but if it is 25% off, they'll be gone in an hour (or less).
  • monkeyhangermonkeyhanger Member Posts: 3,161
LegofanTexas: If they're only allowed to make so many by Lucas then that could be a valid reason to chop something that's doing well (no idea whether there are license restrictions like that). If Lego have finished with it, would they prefer to give it a bit of a discount and have it gone in hours or days rather than quietly let it slip into EOL over weeks or months? No idea on that one - only 4 days to wait and find out!

Who's buying the DS right now? Genuine builders/players or speculators? Wonder what the ratio is?
  • DeadareusDeadareus Member Posts: 264
DS is a set that I haven't been all that interested in BUT i'm thinking now that in a few short years my son (now 3) will really want this set for it's playability factor.

If it is discounted this week I will have to pick it up. If it's not, I'll be grabbing the IS (and FB) and I can hold off until Christmas for the DS....Hopefully.

Expensive stuff getting up to date w/ all these bigger sets having just come out of the dark ages.

Here, here. Among IS, IF, MMV, MVR, Endor, Hoth (and both FB and TH), it's been an expensive few months.

  • Gavin83Gavin83 Member Posts: 251
I've only just come out of my dark ages but I've wanted a DS for a few months now. I'd be buying it for myself rather than for the resale value, although I'd most likely sell it in a few years to make way for new models and to stop the girlfriend getting too upset. I'm probably going to buy it on the 4th regardless of any discount but obviously 10% or 20% off would be extremely helpful.

I'm also considering getting the Grand Emporium while the hulk figure is being offered. Do anyone know if they'll do discounts during this time as well?
  • BuriedinBricksBuriedinBricks Member Posts: 1,367
No indication of discounts during that time, although the calendar does mention double VIP points on select sets during the month of May. It does not say what sets those are though.
  • mressinmressin Member Posts: 843
Spoke to staff at Lego Store Westfields Shepherd's Bush [UK], wagered the SSD might be 10% off.

  • DeadareusDeadareus Member Posts: 264
My plan for right now is:

    - Imperial Shuttle, May 4
    - Fire Brigade, May 15/16
    - Death Star, Thanksgiving '12 (I can move on it earlier if I know it's going to be gone, but ideally I would buy this for under the Christmas tree)

    2013:
    Pet Shop (Summer)
    Grand Emporium (Summer)

    SSD (Thanksgiving)

    2014:
    Town Hall
    R2D2

Darn! Just picked one up from Amazon -- thought 10% off plus no tax and free shipping would be tough to beat for the near future, but 20% off PLUS VIP points is a better deal. Curse this human body and its impatience.

  • BuriedinBricksBuriedinBricks Member Posts: 1,367
20% off and the mini fig may be too hard to pass up. My wife might kill me for bringing more LEGO into the house though. There's only so long I can use that whole "it could be a good investment" defense.

That is the point. If you drop the price even 20% but pick up about another x amount of people that normally would not have bought it then it probably is worth it. Especially if they are trying to clear the stock of them (I believe like they did with UCS Falcon)
The othe possibility is the Imperial Shuttle.... That has not been out as long as the DS, but Im wondering if it is as popular as the DS in terms of sales right now.. Im guessing yes as it is cheaper.

  • NeilJamNeilJam Member Posts: 272
If the DS is discounted I may have to finally cave and get one. It would probably enrage the wife though.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
If SSD is discounted 20% and DS is not, that should speak volumes about which set is selling and which one is not.

SSD was overpriced when released, had they put it out at $299 I think they would have had a hit on their hands. As it was, I didn't buy it until I got it for 20% from Amazon.

IS for 20% however, is a good deal, that set is more impressive than the box or the part count give it credit, to this day, it is what guests who come over walk towards, they all seem to know what it is, even if they don't know the name, "oh, that is that Star Wars shuttle, isn't it?".

The question is, is IS going out or not? :)
  • roxioroxio Member Posts: 1,383
I have a feeling the discounts could be underwhelming, in UK we've already enjoyed IS at 37% off rrp from Amazon.it.
If [email protected] go 20%, + VIP pts, + TC-14 it still doesn't cut it.
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
^ That's what I am feeling too. I'd prefer to miss the TC-14 and pick it up later, or maybe just get one with a £50 set. Even then, most £50 sets can normally be had for £30-35 elsewhere if you are patient.
  • luckyrussluckyruss Member Posts: 872

^ and ^^ I'm also with you two on that one, Shuttle has already been nicely discounted elsewhere.

So I'm sticking with the SSD - haven't seen any chance to pick it up on offer, and unless they clearance it at some point (which is possible but not now) this seems like a decent price at which to pick one up. I also seem to have accrued about £200 of VIP points, so at 20% off I can probably get one by shelling out less than £100! Sweet.

What do you reckon for the pricing once TCD-14 is in wider circulation? You will probably be able to ebay one for £15 say, which equates to the 30% DDDT savings rather than spending £50 at RRPs.
