    It is almost never advantageous to bricklink a set versus buying used if you are not planning to make substitutions.
    On the other hand, with the right substitutions an expensive retired set can be made affordable and still look great for the same building experience.

    ^Caveat would be that you have a great head start with an existing inventory of parts, say >30%, which may make it more cost effective if the cost is considered as $0.
