Best way to identify minifig figures by torso or head

I purchased my first boot sale find the other day and came across loads of loose minifig parts. Is there a website where I could search the different styles and help build the figures up to how they should have looked?

I usually go to peeron.com and search for part #973, which is a minifig torso. Then I get 10 pages like this: http://www.peeron.com/inv/catpic/save/909700426 - and just start looking for recognizable torsos.

It takes me a very long time, and isn't very effective, so I hope that someone else has a better strategy.

Or bricklink? Or post a photo of significant parts eg heads/torsos in the designated thread on here.
