The Tachikoma was removed today by the creator after huge backlash from supporters when he changed the shell of the vehicle so that he could disassociate with Ghost in the Shell.

It's a shame as I thought it was a great engineering build.
I'm not surprised. The fan community probably feel they have been used to boost numbers, then the designer changes the model significantly, away from what they would have voted for.

From the other point of view, if it is not going to get produced if too close to that theme, then he needs to change it.
The changes where fairly significant, to the point where the model was barely recognisable from it's original idea. The 2nd version being fairly ugly and unlikely to pick up any more votes without the IP association.

It does open the door to another issue. Being flexible and allowing projects to improve with feedback etc makes sense, but you shouldn't be able to significantly change a project once a large number of votes are in.

That's not really an issue at all since Lego has the option of redesigning whatever the model is anyway. Additionally, since the 10,000 supporters really are an insignificant number of sales, the vast majority of expected buyers probably wouldn't have any idea about what the model looked like originally and hence no such expectation that might be dashed by such changes.

Changes like the one described are also likely to only upset the supporters that supported it solely because of the license or brand and not the design or desire to purchase. If the apple store model was just changed to a generic "electronics" store modular instead I'm sure close to 100% of the supporters would pull their vote if they could.
  • drdavewatforddrdavewatford Administrator Posts: 6,753
^ Agreed. While I appreciate the designer's dilemma, you can't significantly change the design at 5000+votes and expect people to stay silent.... He courted the fanboys and then turned his back on them - good luck with that !

^^ Yeah, it would look much better as a PC World.

^ Thanks for the sarcasm =)

  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
Thinking about it, the apple store would be great for minfig collectors if it was on iphone X.y release day. You'd need hundreds of figures for the queue.
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
^ try 1000's. But they could all be the same minifig... They're all lemmings anyway =)

    Hi,

I acutally tried to create an account on LEGO CUUSOO 3 weeks ago and they said that they want to send me the activation mail. But anything like this happened yet. What can I do to get my activation mail and did anyone have the same problem before?
  • ModeltrainmanModeltrainman Member Posts: 1,186
Just thought I'd show you all how I changed my Up house. http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/14603

So what happens if a project like a UCS Star Wars or Space Marines set(s) gets 10K votes but Lego already has it in the pipeline? Do they say "Sorry cavegod (or whoever), we were already making one of those." or go ahead and give some credit and the 1% to the project creator? It seems like such a conflict is bound to come up at some point with so many Star Wars projects on there

BTW, Minecraft is now listed on Amazon, Amazon had 14 left in stock when I checked 30 minutes ago, they are down to 6 now...
  • cavegodcavegod Member Posts: 811
Theres a UCS AT-AT that needs 70 more votes to hit the magical 500 for a Lego comment!

I keep plugging but only 4 short of 100 votes now - http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/2227 (OK never going to get 10K but I will be happy with 100 for now)

@monkey_roo... I don't know why but that model with the figures reminds me of the one scene from Fiddler on the Roof. Hopefully someone on this forum has seen that movie too.. otherwise...

I've made quite a few CUUSOO projects. Just a bunch of mini modulars right now, but I'm thinking about making a very large project sometime soon.

Check them out if you get the chance, feedback is greatly appreciated!

    ^That's unfortunate @sidersdd... Oh Amazon.

    and

Please help me to make those two projects becoming real! :-)

Well i have altered my main Winter Village Model to reflect a much larger set. There are now no LDD shots and a big thanks to @Bustin who sent me the instructions to build these following what now looks like an massive LDD webservice crash. Everything is built and badly photographed - http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/2227.
I might stop plugging this one day :)
    Thanks
    matt

No problem! It's a shame that the LDD no longer allows part ordering from Lego.
  • BustinBustin Member Posts: 286
My Little Pony just got axed because hasbro owns the license.

I am glad they killed it off now instead of waiting to 10,000. Smart move to avoid having to cancel another project that reaches the threshold like SotD or Firefly

I wonder what Hasbro would have demanded from lego to make my little pony lego models. Whats the betting Hasbro "develop" My little pony lego?
  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
^ i doubt it. they already sell my little pony. they would just be taking dollars from themselves, and have to do the r/d, design, marketing, etc. doesn't really make sense.

Just want to confirm that Serenity was declined because of a prostitute? Didn't Earth Vader destroy a whole planet? So a prostitute is worse than a genocidal mass murderer? Not that I condone either, infact "fiddler on the roof" made me cry.

@Dougts thats true although I could still see it selling.

@mrseatle Yes he did which is why you cant buy Earth Vader or Jeff Vader lego. Darth Vader his brother is freely available :-P

Do you want some honest feedback?

  • ModeltrainmanModeltrainman Member Posts: 1,186
Yes, please! I'd love some! Many people on Brickset here, are saying they'd buy an Up house...
  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
The model is greatly lacking in detail which would draw people to it. It's mostly just a stacked collection of colored bricks - extremely simplistic. Obviously if it got to 10,000, a LEGO designer would seriously retool it with lots of detailing. But you will never get to 10,000 with such a simple design that looks like something anyone could throw together in an hour or two. in short, it doesn't make anyone stop and go "wow, what a great design!". quite the opposite actually.

Get rid of the LDD backgrounds, they completely distract from the model you are trying to show.

Finally, the fact that it's in LDD and not actual brick is going to hurt. I suspect many people on Cuusoo won't vote for virtual designs, only real brick ones. the digital versions just don't look as good and to some indicate a lack of seriousness and dedication to the task.
  • ModeltrainmanModeltrainman Member Posts: 1,186
Detail like what? I'm afraid I don't understand.

Love it ! Definitely worth supporting....

@Modeltrainman you'd do well to heed the feedback from @dougts above; aside from the fact that LDD designs on Cuusoo do nothing at all for me and it's highly unlikely I'd vote for one, I'm afraid your Up house and Monsters Inc. designs simply need more work and attention to detail to make them worthy of votes IMHO. The Colonial Viper in @kempo81's message above is a great example of a model which works hard to reproduce the subject matter, and if you want to wow the masses you'll need to expend the same level of effort.

    @dougts is correct.

Your design is a good idea, but poorly executed.
If you need to know what he means by 'detail' then take a look at any of the existing Creator houses or the Modular buildings.
Also, look at the Western theme that has just been reviewed by CUUSOO - nicely detailed and actually built. Both these factors give people something to see and vote for.
I think many CUUSOO applicants have very ambitious ideas, but are sorely lacking in their execution and presentation. There are also a lot of entries with designers that have expectations which are simply unreal.
I don't mean to sound critical, but I am trying to be honest and upfront in my feedback.

As for the designs that have just been reviewed, I think & hope that either the Western theme or the BTTF theme somehow will be developed further.

^ way too big unfortunately. I think ~1000 pieces is likely the limit for the Cuusoo team

not to mention, but the sales of the PotC line where quite underwhelming by most accounts, hence no more sets.

^I'm not a fan of BSG, but that one is certainly an impressive ship. I like the size and build techniques seen, it looks well designed. However the severe lack of color leaves it visually wanting. This is even more Bley than the usual SW fare.
