Downtown Disney (California) LEGO Store: Cloaked in Mystery!

edited April 2012 in Everything else LEGO
...well maybe not exactly. The renovation of the LEGO Store in Downtown Disney Anaheim, CA is taking shape. The shape is so obvious, its curious why they are masking it. There was an artist concept drawing floating around, so in case you can't figure out the real design, it won't take much effort.

For fun, I'll offer 10% discount coupons to my BrickLink store to anyone that comes up with a creative WRONG description of what appears under the mystery cloak in the picture. Coupon code valid to users with responses between now and tomorrow evening and will be PM'd tomorrow night.

So tell us -- what can that possiblly be????

Sorry off topic, but since it seems like you took this picture while there, do you know if the store is open during all this? I see the wall put up on the sides but cant tell if they are pointing you to an entrance or not?

@yys4u - there is a temporary store open while they do the remodel here. It is smaller, and more chaotic. The grand reopening is May 25-28.

It's clearly a winged plastic eating dinosaur who is vomiting after eating too many Lego bricks.

(why yes, I do have small children, why do you ask)

It's an elephant's head (notice the trunk on the right side?) being chopped off the body; his brain is hanging by a string...

Angry pigeon stealing terrified old man's walking stick. (Yes the stick does have a flamed pattern on it).

Evidence indicates it is the Earliest Bird (Tyranosaurus robin) getting the Worm (Wormus giganticus).

it looks very similar to the display that was outside the store over the past year.

A fire breathing black dragon and a knight on a white horse with his shield raised. Could be LOTR related maybe?

That dragon and knight are from Sleeping Beauty!

It's a dead parrot - one who has ceased to be, is bereft of life, is pushin' up the daisies, 'as shuffled off 'is mortal coil, 'as gone to meet 'is maker, and if it 'adn't been nailed to its perch, it would have fallen off it ... the other (lower) part is the pet shop owner.
  • Its a picture of a dragon fighting a griffon in.... The Hunger Games.
    (Yes i know im weird.)

It's interesting that they have a Toy Story Lego figure hanging from the store exterior, considering the Toy Story line will likely be gone soon. Or will it...

^ I think that is due to the location next to Disney, play to the surroundings and the passing traffic.
Will be in CA in a few months so might drive down to have a look.

Whether or not they continue the line, I'm sure it will be a crown favorite. It's hard to tell from jawapez's picture but Buzz and Woody project out about 10 feet horizontally and passersby will definitely stop for a picture under them! (look in the lower right of my picture).

The dragon is really a work of art. The underbelly is all dark purple. I messed with the color settings on my photo to show it. In person the black and dark purple are really rich colors that look great together. The fire is all floursecent green, which I bet will be spectacular when lit up at night. My only complaint on the drgon is that they cheated and used steel mesh for the flat parts of the wings. I'm sure it was to allow airflow so a storm wouldn't blow it off the roof, but it's still an "impure" component of the design.

^^^ I really like the Woody and Buzz figures, but from the angle of the pictures, it seems like a weirdly inappropriate pose. (Yes, I know what scene it is from the movie.) Maybe I just have a dirty mind....

I will be there this weekend. Thanks for helping to get me even more excited about it. When. Was there last year, it was the old facade. Did they change the inside much?
  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639
^Big difference inside. Watch for the Aladdin sculpture and especially the magic rug, one of my favorites.

I just had a big argument with someone that the models were not made a big bricks. They insisted they were.
  • DadsAFOLDadsAFOL Member Posts: 617
well you can walk up to them and look at the seams. Nothing bigger than a standard 2x brick used. Except of course the steel structure inside to keep outdoor models in place for many years.

We argued for a long time. It was ridiculous. It all started when he asked me if I built my daughter a walk in dollhouse with the large Legos. I told him they don't make large Legos. I mean really large ones. This argument went on for 10-15 minutes.

Lol. No. Long time "friend" Just recently I have shared by hobby with my friends. It's not that I'm embarrassed, just people are just shocked...lol. Non-Lego lovers just don't understand :)

I guess I just don't fit their "profile" of an obsessive Lego lover. I think people think we all look like Toy Convention people...lol.
