Awesome Surprise in LEGO Batman Set!

So yesterday I bought the Batmobile and the Two-Face Chase set and found an awesome surpise. I opened the bag to start building and decided to build the Batman minifigure first. Right when I put the cowl/mask on it went super low and you could only see half the white bar through the eye holes. I was surprised and had no idea what was happening. I took a LEGO Batman minifigure from my other LEGO Batman set and compared the cowls/masks. The messed up one looks like the cowl Batman had from TDK. It was more rounded (unlike the usual cowl/mask which is more squared), the mouth hole was smaller, the eye holes were lower, the brow was really emphasized (like in the movie!) and the most noticeable change is the ears, they are much more slimmer. This is of course a packaging mistake because I can't find any info on this unusual mask. Could LEGO have possibly given me the cowl for a future LEGO The Dark Knight Rises set instead? I'm not positive but I think that's the case. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.

Could you maybe post some photos of what you mean? I can't really picture it.

Are you sure it's not just the head printing that is higher?
  • ZanXBalZanXBal Member Posts: 16
I'm sorry, I tried but my phone has terrible camera, once my brother gets back from work I'll take some with his iPhone for a better look. And I'm positive it's nothing like head printing, the cowl is way too different to not notice.

That's definitely a new mask. The brow and cheek lines are much more defined, in an improved way. It sits lower on to the shoulder too. Wonder if they will have to eliminate the human eyes completely for the head to align for the lower eye socket?

I'd guess it has more to do with replacing old molds and simply deciding to create a newer, better-looking one than it has anything to do with the films themselves. It'll probably soon turn up across the line including for those of classic comic Batman.

As for the eyes, they could get by with a new face print though knowing Lego's preference for them they might go with the two-sided reversible head print similar to what they did with Jango Fett back in '02 instead of trying to incorporate a single-side approach.

It's true, it could just be a new mold. It looks better than the older one personally, and i'm glad you were able to see the defined brow and cheek lines with my phone's camera quality lol

Thanks for the pics. It's obviously a different mould, but weird that they would introduce it when it doesn't match the head printing. It it were me I'd email lego and ask why.

    Not black though, oops
Which would therefore support the hypothesis that it's just slight changes to a replacement mold and not the result of deliberate film tie-in.

Links for pics. I'll have better ones later if you want.

Tell me if you need more! :)
I would like some size comparions from all 4 sides of the cowls.
where both are the same distance from the camera.

My friend actually got the Batman Jet ski poly bag set at Legoland and I checked the helmet and its the new mold as well. I tried to pick up one of these sets too but Legoland said they got them yesterday and sold out in 2 hours. He works there so he had first dibs :(

^Try comparing face prints to see if they are equal.

Is that not the first reported sighting of that polybag?

  • yys4uyys4u Member Posts: 1,093
@ZanXBal yea its the one where he has the little bat boat and a couple flick missiles I think.

@atkinsar Uh I don't know to be honest. But my buddy who works there was surprised they sold out cause he said they got 10 boxes of them...

    @yys4u which Legoland was it?
  • yys4uyys4u Member Posts: 1,093
^Legoland California. I should have asked when they were expecting more..

So after experimenting with many Batman heads and helmets I came to the conclusion that the helmet fits perfectly fine. It was just the head that was messed up. And after comparing the head I still don't get why it was messed up? The printing lined up perfectly with other heads and whatnot. Oh well.

This does look like the "Dark Knight Rises" type bat mask. I distinctly remember Batman's cowl having that "elevated-eyebrow" type look to it in the films (especially in the 2008 film). Perhaps it is an accidental inclusion of a future set's mold. Either contact LEGO, see whats up.

It's been a while since I came back to this thread, but It turns out it was actually for a future set. The set was the Batman Jetski set: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=30160-1
