Struggle to care about the actual movie - but would be nice if we got some nice forest-type 'location' sets (rather than the standard vehicle + a few figures).

Wouldn't be surprised to see a Lego Avatar game in the works too I suppose?

I would be surprised actually, surely TT are too busy with Skywalker Saga and there's no point if a game comes out two years after the film (which will probably flop anyway).

Mind you they've planned a production line of them (4 sequels is it?) so maybe. But I wouldn't be surprised if they stopped after nobody goes to see the first one.

    Too late for an edit...
Ha ha reading that back it's proper grumpy old man shouting into the wind stuff. I'm sure it'll do okay, it's Cameron plus big budget plus Disney after all. No interest from me though.

Yeah personally I thought the first film was terrible but my son loved it. Cameron does make terribly cheesy films, even the ones I like, Aliens and Terminator have some laughable dialogue and scenes in.

As with the Lone Ranger and Pirates of the Caribbean though (also poor films IMHO), I’m happy if some decent sets come out of the license. Some quality figs, cool mechs and decent sci-fi military vehicles?

ISV Venture Star please. I'll have a Valkyrie, a Dragon Assault Ship, a Samson and a Scorpion Gunship as well. Thanks.

I'm not fussed about blue aliens or trees :-)

I don’t think Avatar is a ‘terrible’ film but I do agree with this point. The Lone Ranger Lego sets were almost universally awesome so dismissing the actual Lego products based on the quality of the film almost isn’t valid. I expect good things from the vehicles and locales of Pandora in Lego so fingers crossed.

I think Avatar’s mainly a victim of being popular - if anything makes enough of an impact culturally, it will become fashionable to hate it (Star Wars Prequels originally, the MCU nowadays for some). If I was a film reviewer I would’ve given Avatar’s story maybe 3 stars, but the overall impact of the cinematography, sounds and effects at least 4 stars, because that’s where all the effort went.

I loved the Lone Rangers sets, definitely in agreement with you on their awesomeness :) I couldn’t afford the POTC sets at the time but I wish I could’ve as I loved them too.

I’d give Avatar zero stars for storyline though, I struggled to stay awake through that film and will never forgive my son for making me rewatch it several times ;) Zero stars for the rest too. Way too much CGI meant I never got immersed in the film as it never looked real. Hey though, as always everyone having the same tastes would make for a boring world.

Although I’m not as fussed about the natural side of the Avatar world I am interested to see if Lego introduces any new moulds for some alien plants or maybe some animals ?

Avatar is wildly successful, so certainly there is a segment of people that will levy unwarranted criticism.  And warranted criticism.  And confusing ignorant criticism.

I don't see too many recent criticisms of Glitter.  Because nobody cares and until you read this, you may not have known that Mariah Carey made a movie in 2001 about herself that nobody saw.

When I saw the title, part of me thought 'Wow, they are remaking The Last Airbender stuff, eh?"
I would like to have a hard time believing Cameron's Avatar will still be successful. I mean the draw to the original movie was the graphics and 3D, but both are 'old hat' now, unless Cameron is producing in 4D, and can stop time in is tracks for the likely 3 hours you will need to watch the next movie, or going to offer random movie goers a spot in one of the next 300 Avatar movies planned.. I'm sure it will make its vast sums of money, but the original feels like a one trick pony that's past its prime. Never mind that LEGO is now on board, so it automatically feels like its 'jumped the shark' and is too late. I'm sure it will do gangbusters and people will love it for its one trick it can do though. I do look forward to the likely new part molds in wild colors, so there is that at least (and we will be able to get a gold nugget mold of unobtainium)

I'm sure there are a sizeable number of people that are equally confused as to the success of Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Harry Potter or Fast/Furious.

I'll run out and see any Batman movie, no matter the quality, and I can't be dragged to one of those idiotic car chase movies.

Avatar made the most money ever.  And given the vast expanse of time between the movies, I have no doubt that Avatar 2 will also make a bazillion bazillion dollars.  However, if that movie is a steaming pile of TLJ, then we'll see significant diminishing returns. Like the Matrix sequels or the Chronicles of Narnia.

I don't think the original was particularly groundbreaking in terms of story, but it has its devotees.

I can watch almost any action, blockbuster, sci-fi movie but I will not waste a minute on those "idiotic car chase movies"!

All this fuzz about highest grossing movie had me thinking, how many tickets did it actually sell? Since 3D tickets used to be more expensive, back in the day, when 3D was still a thing. In Norway we measure number of tickets sold, not gross, so I went back to 2003 to see how well Avatar fared when it came to ticket sales, and it did not come out on top: Avatar is the 9th best selling film in Norway between 2003 and 2022, behind Max Manus [NO], Mamma Mia!, LotR: Return of the KingIce Age 2, Kon-Tiki [NO], Ice Age 3, Louis & Luca and the Snow Machine [NO] and The Wave [NO]. So it was big here too, but not the biggest. Norway is a tiny market, of course, so we don't matter in the big picture, but I still found it interesting to see how different our top 10 is from the US or worldwide ones.

They would look great next to my SW sets.

These sequels have been delayed and delayed so will be interesting to see what releases first, the sets or the films they are meant to be based on.

As we see repeatedly in hollywood plans and sequels can soon be dropped if films underperform (though I had read they were filming a number of these sequels back-to-back, so in that case a lot of the money is already invested...).

Treehouses, colourful creatures, VTOL aircraft and mechs... I can see why lego would get onboard. With the Jurassic movies taking a pause I can see them wanting to fill that 'giant creature and vehicle' product gap.

I enjoyed the first movie in the cinema, but more for the 3D spectacle than any originality in the storyline. I keep almost watching it again on Disney+ so be interesting to see whether it holds any interest without the 3D experience, perhaps that sort of movie that makes enjoyable 'background watching'.

For some reason I am having a hard time imagining this theme done with regular Minifigs. Not sure what it is but I just feels like they would be out of place. Maybe because it seems like this would be similar (in my mind) to the Elves theme, with the fantastical plants and animals.

I liked the first movie, and I saw it in 2D (3D doesn’t work for me). But it’s been a long time, so the sequels just seem way late, and there isn’t the kind of following that the SW OT created.

Maybe this explains why the Elves theme was retired.

Minidolls are almost the same height as minifigs so offer no advantage. It wouldn't surprise me if they ignore height differences like they frequently do in other themes for taller people.

The main thing I remember about the blue aliens (apart from them... er... coupling with all sorts of animals) is that they were super athletic, so I can't imagine them being represented by minidolls. The tail piece will give them a slight lift, and I imagine that might be it. If I recall correctly they hardly interact with humans, so scale might not be a big issue.
