Hello, what is the difference between Star Wars minifigures sw0001a, sw0001b og sw0001c?

    - sw0001a has a 1x2 tan plate attached to its back to represent a backpack
    - sw0001b is the same as a but without the backpack plate
    - sw0001c has a straight arm which allows it to point tools and modern blaster elements forwards

The reason for the different IDs is that minifigures fundamentally contain different parts even though they are the same character (or sometimes this is also used for slightly different prints/no stickers)

That was only in the very early days of bricklink. They soon adopted a different approach when the figures contained different (even slightly different) parts. If those figures were done today, it would be three distinct entries.

    For example,

sw0471 and sw0707 vary by just the neck bracket
They even go in different locations at BL, as the neck bracket is only needed for the fight scene in Ep II, so he is an Ep II character, whereas the other one was used in multiple sets for different movies and so is a general SW one not assigned to any Episode.

Arm / hand angle differences are also kept apart now, such as gen047 and gen099:

Indeed! Nowadays the new minifigure entries on Bricklink are pretty much all distinct numbers if anything is different about their build or decoration. In some ways that’s helpful, in some ways not (coming from someone with a large display case of minifigs ordered differently to Bricklink).

I have the same issue with the two different LOTR Legolas figures, do they really differ enough to keep them both ... (obviously the answer is yes!)
