Well let's put it this way, if you enter a Cuusoo project knowing that you are doing things that the Cuusoo manifesto has already told you not to do, then if you reach the 10k goal, your project's followers as well as yourself should not be shocked and complain when you get denied...

It seems a bit pointless to me to allow a project that has obvious infractions against it to be allowed in the first place... Then tell the creator after he reaches the finish line that his/her idea was rejected due to molds which were known about 6 months prior by the creator and whomever moderated the project into publicity...

I never said the creator's model was plagiarized, I said that it was the same idea and it is using parts that never existed to make it more appealing...

Competes with what? The wide variety of Lego trains and train accessories currently available? There's the Horizon Express, the TLR soon and...and...uh...hmm.

Cuusoo has clearly stated they are interested in producing one off sets, not themes. They are already producing a bttf set so why would they do another? If the market is there and they can expand the license, wouldn't Lego just put their own designers into a bttf theme and skip cuusoo altogether ?

Lego designers will change the model anyway. I don't mind seeing the odd part in a model that is not going to be possible, if it will probably be changed by the designers for something more appropriate later anyway. If the whole design relies on that part, then there is a problem. If it is just something to smooth a curve or something like that, it doesn't influence whether I'd vote for it.

For me, Cuusoo is more about ideas than the specific build, although clearly the build has to be thought out and relatively well designed. The first may not necessarily be the best, which is why "he copied my idea" doesn't really hold. Otherwise, you'd get loads of people submitted poorly thought out builds but good ideas, just to block the place holder for that idea.

Competes with the Delorean. Just being goofy about that since the Cuusoo rules are lengthy, then additional rules get added once review rolls around.

Ah, well, I think (in a world that it got produced) the BTTF train would totally compliment the train as opposed to compete. As would Biff's car :)

Frankly, I'm looking forward to lots of moc'ing BTTF and TLR sets to recreate all sorts of scenes from BTTF 3!

There is no rule against using customized parts in a Cuusoo proposal. However, LEGO Cuusoo sets do not have the kind of budget needed to introduce new molds. This doesn't mean that every project with a new mold will be denied. Designers might be able to find a solution using existing molds that the builder didn't think of. And in fact, even if a project depends on a mold that doesn't exist in current sets, there's always the slim chance that TLG's designers are planning to put a comparable piece into production for an unrelated future product release. It's not something to gamble on, but it's still a possibility that can't be discounted.

On a side note, the Cuusoo moderators can't be expected to know every part that's in production any more than a LEGO fan can. Even this very forum has a "help identifying pieces" topic, after all. So a rule against new molds in general would be difficult to enforce-- as such, there is just a guideline advising builders not to create set proposals that depend on specialized new molds. The new Back to the Future project has a couple new molds but I'd hardly say it depends on them, especially since nobody's asking people to choose between this one and others that don't include new molds. You're perfectly welcome to support both, and I imagine supporting one would cause the other to show up in the suggestions of similar or related projects.

You sort of answered your own question. Cuusoo products are one-off sets, not themes. And as such if the Back to the Future "DeLorean" time machine set is successful, it will show there's a market for that particular one-off set. It won't offer conclusive evidence of whether there's a market that can support additional BttF sets, so while TLG might decide to use this as an opportunity to consider a more expansive license, it's just as likely that it could take another successful project to get them to look into the viability of an additional, much larger product.

If Cuusoo couldn't be used to create things that share a common theme with already-revealed Cuusoo sets, then the same would apply to existing product lines, and about every LEGO Star Wars or Super Heroes Cuusoo project would be doomed to failure. But that's assuming that because TLG has considered the viability of a licensing agreement, they have also considered the viability of every possible set that could result from such a licensing agreement, and that's not a very reliable assumption.

it was a rhetorical question really. if TLG decides to produce additionall BTTF products, they would almost certainly design them themselves now that they have a license they can either work off of our expand. It would be silly for them to have another cuusoo production in that IP.

... and about every LEGO Star Wars or Super Heroes Cuusoo project would be doomed to failure.
they already are doomed to failure, they just don't know it yet. Cuusoo has decided to pretty much let anything sit there, even stuff TLG knows 100% for certain they won't produce if they hit 10k. The chances of a SW Cuusoo set being produced are probably pretty close to zero. but they aren't going to kill off interest in Cuusoo by saying so publicly or taking down all the submissions.

I haven't really seen any updates at all on the cuusoo site about the release timeframe for this set nor any updates about the last review for portal , the science rover and sandcrawler.

Anyone see anything out there giving a release window or any updates to the review process?

    Thanks!

Maybe it's on back to the future time, and it's already been made and out of production.

Releasing it this year on Oct 21 would be a nice tie in.

What do we think the price will be? Same as minecraft (£35) would seem about right and people would pay it

The last I saw was mid-2013. However since other summer sets have begun to show up, I wonder if they did decide to hold of until October.

The Lego Back to the Future, DeLorean Time Machine (21103) has had mixed feelings. We can confirm:

-It will be released on 18th July 2013 and cost £34.99 in the UK.
-It is a 3 in 1 model as the instructions give the builder the opportunity to add details to the car to modify into three different versions that represent the three different movies.
-It has movie like features like opening doors, folding wheels, the iconic rear of the DeLorean and the iconic screen that sets the time and date of the destination.
-Minifigures included are Marty McFly with skateboard/Hoverboard and Doc Brown.

My thought is does this really need another thread?

There is already pre-release chat here: http://www.bricksetforum.com/discussion/comment/196653

No doubt there will be even more threads when it is available for purchase. It is so much better if it is all kept in one thread.

In regards to thoughts on this set, to me it looks like one of the worst LEGO sets ever. It doesn't just fail as a replica of the DeLorean, but also as a LEGO model. It is just sooo ugly! So sorry for offending the LEGO gods...)c:

It sucks pretty much. Figs are cool but do little to distract from that god awful hood and windshield. Not to mention the high price point. There is some good detailing along the sides and rear and I am keen to see in the flesh just to confirm to myself that it is every bit as bad as I think. It was an almost dead cert purchase for me based on the original design submission but that was until the lego designers got their hands on it and made it into an almost complete mess. That's £35 saved for something else though. It has been a very good year for sets and design this year and this has to be one of the only horrors at the moment.

Looks pretty grim. It's one of the few things I would have broken my 'Technic only' rule for, if they'd got it right, but this looks rough in comparison to most licenced sets brought out recently, and indeed comes a distant second to the original Cuusoo submission.

I don't doubt that the designer(s) had their reasons for making it look the way it does, but I'm disappointed all the same.

Still - £35 to spend on something else!

I will get this for the minifigs and spend hours trying to modify the Delorean to actually look like a Delorean.

Anyone who has the Town Plan set knows that all it is missing is the Delorean. Seriously, it has the Town Hall and clock tower, gas station, movie theater . . . even a 1950s Studebaker style car!

Good idea. I honestly think once we see this set in person, with all of the optional builds, that a lot of people will change their minds. Also there is the possibility that if nobody buys the set (like a lot of the people are saying) that it will have a short production run and thus become more collectable and more valuable.
  • CircleKCircleK Member Posts: 1,055
^^ Totally Agree. It's already growing on me. I think it will run a "It sucks and I hate it! - I kinda like it now that I see it - I'm just buying one - it's freaking awesome - I need 10 more" course with a lot of people. This will especially be true if a simple mod cleans it up some. I'm pretty certain I'm getting at least one at this point.

When the set (car only) was first shown.....I didn't like the hood and pillars, but I liked it better than the original CUUSOO submission. Now knowing that it comes with figs and the option to modify the car into three different versions......it's a must buy.

The exact same reaction I had.

I'll be shocked if any AFOL who grew up on these movies will be able to resist purchasing the set despite it's (minor) downfalls.

All I need now is that new Creator House and build Marty's black truck to put in the garage.

Hood and windshield needs work to make it look like a DeLorean. Why no "glass" windshield like most Lego vehicles? Big fan of the movies and the minifigures are great.
