Longevity of power function components

Standard Lego bits last beyond 20 years easily. However, how long power function lasts? My code pilot (8479 barcode truck) does not work any more.

With Lego now introducing power functions in almost every Technical sets nowadays, do you think it will still work after a several years?

Probably not. I wouldn't expect my PF stuff to last anymore than 10 years. Realistically, I wouldn't be surprised if they failed after 6 or 7 years.
You've just inspired me to go buy some replacement motors. Thanks. :)

Since models with PF usually have very low gearing, if motors don't work, they are somewhat tedious to operate via hands. Also, resale value of sets will drop heavily if motors/components are ceased come selling time.
