MOC Color Advice

I'm curious if any experienced MOC-ers have any advice on how best to color the ground of a decently sized scene. My initial thoughts were either to buy a large amount of colored plates and lay them on the XL gray base plates or to buy a few base plates and paint them the color i need. Any help would be great.

    While I don't moc much, I have seen a few. What kind of landscape is it? If you want it flat then just a baseplate would do, if you want it a bit hilly or undulating I'd suggest layering plates - then you can use different colours to create a bit of texture.

    Personally I wouldn't ever paint any lego, but I'm sure others have.

    I think we all know that painting is sacrilege!

    Look at some of the big show displays and see how they have coloured the ground. A lot of them just use green baseplates, but if you're looking for different colours you might still be better off hunting down different colour baseplates (they do come in a variety of ground-ish colours!), probably on bricklink - it might work out cheaper than laying plates on top of normal baseplates.

    If you let people know what sort of ground you want you'll probably get some more creative ideas here!

    It seems to be all the rage these days to build your ground with bricks and slopes, 'studs to the side' so the smooth sides of the bricks form the surface. I can't get to http://www.brothers-brick.com/ from work to check but I suspect there are loads of examples on its home page.

    @Arbatra,

    Got to be plates...

    I have thought that with the new Geonosian Cannon set, it would be great to buy lots of these and do a Geonosis arena moc with a stand packed with Geonosians.

    Actually, you might know the answer to this (off topic sorry!), but who is the character on the arena balcony next to Count Dooku with the clicky voice who needs subtitles?, and has he been in any lego set? I am pretty certain the answer to the latter question is no.

    ^ not sure of the characters name but I think it is the same one that takes the plans for the death star out of the computer at one point in the PT.

    after a lot of internet trawling, I have found out the answer.

    Poggle the Lesser, Archduke of Geonosis.

    This is when I know my expertise is truly in the Original Trilogy!
