Piecing Together 10190 Market Street (With substitutions)

edited February 2012 in Building and Techniques
I'm taking the liberty of making this a subject of its own, since I know that there are others out there who are considering piecing together Market Street from Bricklink.

I had some of the parts, and bought the rest from BL. It cost me roughly $200. The big changes in this version is that the dark blue pieces are replaced with regular blue, and the white hoses are replaced with black ones. I don't have the box or the instructions.

I have some detailed pics here for those interested:

Thanks guys :) I'm really happy with how it turned out. I had lots of blue, so those parts didn't cost me anything.

I forgot that there are two black windows (that are supposed to be white) on the medium blue floor. You can see them here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ordningsfrun/6921731723/in/photostream
I didn't have enough spare white windows. I've ordered two white ones that should arrive any day now. They aren't expensive - I just couldn't wait building the set even if I was two windows short :)

Don't get me wrong you did a good job but I still don't get why people would even want to recreate this set. I find it hideous. Of course this is my humble opinion.

You know, I mostly agree with you that 10190 is not the greatest set in the world.. For me, though, I love the other modulars so much, I wanted to give MS a shot.

Would I advise someone to get it at all costs? Not really. Would I understand if someone were determined to get it nevertheless because the modular series is so special? Yes! Absolutely. That's why I got it.

I pieced this one together from parts too...

I can kind of get the hate that this set gets. I think that part of the hate is probably due to the fact it's not available anymore, so people have amplified their feelings that it's 'ugly' so they don't feel as though they're missing out on it...

That said, I don't really like the little yard bit on the side, it really does seem a little bit pointless and in a row of modular buildings it creates a slightly weird gap (although to be fair, you do get gaps like this in rows of buildings too...).
The house itself has some nice features, such as the raised doorway and the unusual stepped gable, and I maintain that it looks pretty good in a modular street!
  • jtkauffjtkauff Member Posts: 15
I know what I'm wanting to do, at least initially, is piece together just the house portion. I've always felt the house was nice (going from pictures and owning no modulars yet to compare to) but agree that the yard just feels rather... off from the rest of the modular street. I think doubling the size of the yard and converting it to more of an open-air market would be nice - right now the current yard size just makes it look like the street has a chunk missing from it more than anything else. The roof on the yard seems rather out of place too - I was surprised to see it there when looking at the directions after seeing lots of shots where it wasn't visible.
  • thecleatorthecleator Member Posts: 70
Perhaps I will eliminate the yard and just go with the building for my street. Opinions anyone?

If it were for sale today, for the original $89 price point, would I buy one? Sure... Would I buy one for $150? Maybe... and that is a long maybe...

Anything more? No, because, at the end of the day, I think the set is pretty bleah and doesn't fit with the other modulars.

So it isn't a lack of having it for sale, even originally it wasn't that interesting.

I'm about 2/3 the way to my own Market Street. Spent about $50-$60 on parts I didn't have and I'm waiting on a couple more orders to finish it. Surprisingly I had about half of it in my sorted collection.

Everything but the dark blue arches and white hoses are fairly available.

I mainly want it for completion. I have every other Modular to date.

^Nice, I don't get why people pay $700+ for it. Even with the box/manuals, its still not worth that much.
  • princedravenprincedraven Member Posts: 3,764
I too have been putting this together for a while, pretty much complete.
I got lucky with the dark blue arches and even think I have some spare.
3 white hoses are pretty much the only thing switched on mine.
Have to say I think it is not as nice as the others, but I do love the modular range and would not be without it.
  • luckyrussluckyruss Member Posts: 872
I also pieced it together from Bricklink, and have managed to secure the white hoses and the blue arches without having to pay through the nose. I built my dark blue layer from a mix of 1x2s (mostly from PaB), 1x10s (had a few) and 1x2x2s rather than 1x4s (which seemed too expensive) but that was the only change.

This looks good though - from the pics I can hardly tell the difference - you could maybe consider exchanging the standard blue on the awning over the front door for a different blue (med blue?) to give it back the contrast from the original?
  • mr_bennmr_benn Member Posts: 941
You can get the dark blue bricks (not the arches) through the Lego replacement parts program - probably going to be cheaper than a Bricklink alternative!
  • Si_UKNZSi_UKNZ Member Posts: 4,179
personally i think the white hoses look much better than black on this set. just get tabless instead of tabbed and they are about 10p each.

also bear in mind that if you dont like the config, the set is designed so you can move bits of the building around and swap them about so just try a diff config. if youre building frmo parts its easy enough to spec out a couple of duplicate middle sections and build above the market as well
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
I've always said I would never bother Bricklinking a set, but based on the prices people here are reporting for putting together a 98% example, I'd probably do it in this case.

Spending $200 to put together a set that otherwise costs $800+ to buy is just nuts...
  • DuchessaDuchessa Member Posts: 287
Wow. I knew a few people were interested in this set, but not so many... :)

First, I'm aware that I have the wrong doors on the building as well (the two dk stone ones on the front). I've ordered two black ones as replacement.

Just like many others of you, I don't like the lower half of the building. But I wanted this set since I'm aiming to have a complete set of Modulars. I'll probably take the lower half apart, and only use the blue main building with the other modulars.

I'll probably also do as some of you suggested: buy lots of 1x2 dk blue bricks and eventually replace the regular blue with dark blue. But I'm not in a hurry. I kind of like the blue-mdblue version.

If it helps any, i just finished piecing together both MS and CC through Bricklink, Lego, and eBay. I have 99% of the original pieces (white hoses were one piece I subbed on with tabless versions). I was able to find the blue arches by getting a used 8893 set that came with 4. Was able to be patient and get two others for 10 bucks each, but the 4 from the 8893 set came in at 5 bucks each (and I was able to use some of those pieces which i considered free from that purchase)! That's my suggestion.

Also, be patient with the harder to find pieces (light bluish gray RIGHT door). They can be found for about 10 bucks or so if you look out for them. I took my time finding pieces and making orders, my total for both sets came in at $575. I ordered some extras by accident so I should be able to recoup a little from selling those! I feel i did pretty well.

Get the red roof slopes from lego, along with the dark blue bricks. Sometimes Lego is cheaper than anywhere else!

edit to add that all my bricklink orders were for "new" pieces...and obviously lego came new. The ebay set was used however. 95% new pieces over both sets.

I've now read a couple of times that you can get the dark blue bricks from LEGO. Do you mean the dark blue 1x4 brick (design id 3010), of which you need 79? I've looked several times on [email protected] PaB and have yet to find these bricks in dark blue.

Is it possible that it's only available in certain countries? (I live in the US.) Or do you have to go to a b&m store to find them?

I think the suggestion is to ring them up and ask / or go through the "missing parts" service and ask specifically for these. If they still have the parts, they are usually happy to supply them (people have suggested similar for the rarer parts on the 10179 UCS Falcon, for example).

I've not seen the 1x4s on PaB recently (I'm in the UK); in fact, the 1x2s seem to have just been taken off in the last part review.
  • DuchessaDuchessa Member Posts: 287
I have the same question as DaddyWhale about ordering stuff from Lego. Can I just call the customer service and ask if they have dark blue 1x4 bricks for sale?

I'm still hoping that the dark blue pieces (especially the 1x4 bricks and 1x8x2 arches) will turn up in future sets, thus making them cheaper....

^ Yes, that's exactly it! For the 1x4 dark blue bricks, get the parts number out of the pdf manual (I think it's 4264569, those are the ones from Cafe Corner that I think are exactly the same colour) as it makes it easier for them to give you a quick answer.

They definitely don't do the big dark blue arches anymore - you may get lucky in the USA but there's none in Europe (hence the ridiculous bricklink prices). You don't actually SEE any of the arches in the final build really, they're all hidden, so I'd strongly recommend substituting the colours.

except for the 6 spare ones I have :o) ... PM me with offers (just to be clear, theyre the 8-wide 2-high dark blue arches i.e. the rare ones).

  • princedravenprincedraven Member Posts: 3,764
@mr_benn, not suggesting people go out and pay a fortune for them, but I have to disagree about not seing the arches, there are 2 slap bang on the front of the side market bit... Unless you meant the main building only.
  • DuchessaDuchessa Member Posts: 287
I might buy one dk blue arch (the one for the main building) and leave the others as they are now. I had lots of spare tan aches, so they were for free :)
@princedraven - have you seen my version with the tan arches?
@Si_Dorking_Surrey_UK - I might get back to you about the arches!
  • princedravenprincedraven Member Posts: 3,764
^ yeah, like your version, looks nice.
I think it makes the market bit a little 'disconnected' to the main building, as the blue arches kind of link them up for me, but I don't think the tan arches look out of place at all, looks good.
  • jpczjpcz Member Posts: 95
Yes, the blue bricks that you need 79 of. At the bottom of lego go to "missing parts" then "lost a part". Put in the set number and all the pieces for the set come up. Well at least the ones still available. You will see the 1x4 blue bricks there. Lego calls it earth blue i think. I know they were available as of about 2 weeks ago when i placed my order....I actually ordered 98 i think because there were some needed for cafe corner. I also picked up the white window frames from lego and a couple other pieces that i couldnt find in the right quantity from one seller (i think one of those pieces was the dark red or reddish brown 1x1 with headlight that you need 60 of for CC...lego price was also the best i could find in that quantity). Lego charges a flat rate 2.95 to ship, so you cant really go wrong.

Suggestions...if you need more than 5 or 6 unique pieces, do not CALL lego...they will ask that you go through the website as I outlined above. They hate being on the phone making orders.
  • jpczjpcz Member Posts: 95
Amazon has the 8893 set (used) for about 50 bucks....ask the seller to make sure they have all 4 arches, but that averages out to 12.50 an arch but that set also has a few other pieces needed for MS. Also includes some pieces that on average are sold for around .20 each so you can make some money back...
  • mr_bennmr_benn Member Posts: 941
^^ My recommendation is to put in your order online, and then once you've got your order number, then go give them a call - it'll shimmy the whole process along faster
  • DuchessaDuchessa Member Posts: 287
I'm checking out Legos missing parts feature right now. I put some parts in my cart, but didn't check out. Shouldn't the price of the parts be listed before I give them my personal information? And can they refuse to sell me 79 dk blue 1x4 bricks, since it isn't likely that I bought a new sets with all the dk blue parts missing...?
  • jpczjpcz Member Posts: 95
    edited February 2012
No dont worry about any of that....checkout (give your information) and then you will get an email with the order number and everything. You arent actually "checking out" in the sense that we know it. You are basically submitting the pieces you want and at a later time will be asked to call lego to pay. You never actually enter any payment information (just address) online.

No the missing pieces link i suggested is just one that allows you to easily find the pieces if you dont know the item numbers. It doesnt really mean they were missing. Thats how i placed my large order, and didnt have any problems.

Lego never really shows prices until you get the pieces in the mail. But when you call to place the order, you can ask and then remove the item it you arent happy. Thats one thing i wish they did different

Get creative and you should be able to put together this set will all the original, correct pieces without substitutions for the same price. The are only 3 rare parts to this set and all are easily available in less desirable sets cheaply (explorians, bionicles, spongebob etc).

Tip when ordering from Lego Direct...get the correct part number from Bricklink (Inventory then Show Part Color Code down the bottom), then use the contact Lego from and go to town with as many parts as you want. You don't need to call or use the Missing Brick or Pick a Brick feature. TLG will then email you shortly with your total and order number....call them to place the order.

I may have to abuse the missing brick option....

I made a deal this easter for the two lt stone doors, and thought it might be interesting to share with others who are bricklinking Market Street.

I bought set 3825. It's a Spungebob Squarepants set, that has both the doors you need. I paid $70 including shipping. I'm keeping the doors for myself, and then I'm selling the set for $30 - with two black doors as replacement - to a friend of mine who's kids like Spungebob. Yes, I know it's still a lot of money that I'm spending on the doors, but compared to the Bricklink prices (especially for the right door), it's not that bad.
  • AlczervikAlczervik Member Posts: 93
^did the same thing , that is good idea to sell it to someone else with other doors, im not sure yet what ill do with the rest
  • Si_UKNZSi_UKNZ Member Posts: 4,179
I picked the set up for £10 and just used the rest for loose parts.
  • DuchessaDuchessa Member Posts: 287
I've kept an eye on lots of 3825, but they are all really expensive now. So I figured it was better to take a hit now rather than regretting it later. And since I can sell the main set (with other doors), I think it's an affordable solution for the door problem.

The white hoses and dark blue arches are yet to be solved, however. Right now I have lt stone arches and white hoses with tabless ends (instead of tabbed ones. That works.

Glad i bought this set for my daughter when it came out. She doesnt play with Lego anymore but was quite interested when i told her what one door was worth.

I'm currently in the process of buying all the correct pieces off of BrickLink. If anyone has done this, what is the total cost of all the correct pieces?

Did this last June for around $350 for correct brand new pieces. As usual most of the pieces are cheap and easy with 3 or 4 rarer pieces harder and more expensive. Just looking thru bricklink those rarer pieces have really shot up in cost the past year...might be better to try and snag another set these came in or use alternates and hope lego brings back those pieces for a new set.

  • DuchessaDuchessa Member Posts: 287
I just made another deal. I bought a MISB copy of set 8757 from a swedish e-bay-linked site. I paid $35 including shipping.

This set has three of the navy/dark blue 1x8x2 arches, along with lots of other navy blue pieces. I'm quite sure the lady who sold it had no idea what the arches are worth.. :) I'll keep the useful pieces, and then donate the rest of the bionicle crap (I mean stuff) to a friend of mine who has a son that likes bionicle. Really made my day!
