Why is 75312 Boba Fett's Starship not named Slave I?

The recent announcement of 75312 Boba Fett's Starship has been slightly overshadowed by the set name, which notably omits 'Slave I'.

Several previous LEGO renditions of the Slave I have used that name, so this change provoked some controversy.

Fortunately, James from Jedi News and myself recently spoke with Jens Kronvold Frederiksen and Michael Lee Stockwell from the LEGO Star Wars design team, who briefly addressed the name change during our discussion of the new products.

Because to some people, feelings are all important.  Disney is rife with these kinds of people.

It is easy to show how virtuous you are when there's no real opposition. Why don't people like this go to places where there's still actual slavery? Oh, of course. They don't because then they'd have to actually do something rather than show their hollow support that doesn't cost them a dime.

    ...still actual slavery...
'Uyghur 1' would be a little on-the-nose, and 'Vocational Education and Training Center Involuntary Occupant 1' is a bit too wordy.

Disney Exec 1: We must drop the name Slave I; it's an offensive fictional starship.
Disney Exec 2: Should we drop anything else? Like what about burning people alive, severed limbs, the slaughter of innocent children, stuffing people into fresh carcasses, robotic torture and mass genocide?
Disney Exec 1: Are you crazy? Those are perfectly acceptable.

Disney Exec 2:  They're just about done digitally painting on boxer shorts for 10 movies worth of Chewbacca.  I'm sure Star Wars fans will appreciate the edits.  It's for their own good.

You all should be careful.  Before you know it, they'll take all these suggestionsw and release a new version that will omit anything that could even be remotely considered offensive.  It'll consist of the opening crawl, then immediately jump straight into the end credits.  They'll even call it, "Special Edition - Director's Cut" (SEE WHAT I DID THERE?).

Disclaimer: I'm absolutely NOT taking any sides in this argument with this post, although even that will draw ire from both sides these days...

All the stuff Disney deems 'ok' are visual, and hard to reference in order to generate outrage (even the image above only means something if you have prior knowledge - that could be anything). Having the name of a product with the word 'Slave' in it is both easily found online, easily cited, and presents awkward questions for Disney from parents whose children want their 'heroes' tooling around in a toy spaceship that reminds them of what America (and the British Empire) did on the daily which was not very good at all.

It's totally just for appearances, and rather hypocritical, but anyone thinking it would be anything but that doesn't know just how soulless and greedy the Disney money-making machine is.

For reference - I do not care in the slightest what word is printed on the box.

^^Seconded.  I'm gonna buy it anyway and call it the Slave I.

But damn, you should see the Alien Sea Cow Twitter group blowing up over Luke Skywalker touching a female breast in an unwanted, unsolicited manner.
That scene will be removed from TLJ any minute now....

In Disney's defense, they're guessing as to what the mob would find arbitrarily 'offensive' on any given day.  Considering they avoided real controversy with Splash Mountain by announcing a 're-imagining' that'll happen 10 years from now, and also avoided the mob by putting meaningless 'disclaimers' before certain movies on Disney+...

I say we just jettison the whole ST and start over.  Just have Thrawn return from Star Trek IV, take over the Imperial Remnant that now exists from Mandalorian, and go from there...

So, one nitpick here, slavery has existed since people.  It still exists today.  Only "woke" western leftists place it on America or the British Empire.  Besides, Boba Fett flew Slave One.  The "heroes" were only ever on it against their will....or better said, one of the heroes was on it against his will.

Side note, I like that some media outlets are reporting that the new name is 'starship'.

I don't get the impression the name is being changed, instead we're just all going to ignore the name until it's re-named this winter.

Did they say they are going to rename it or are we just all assuming that? I thought they were just going generic like 'Boba Fett's Car' as opposed to 'Boba Fett's Corvette' for the package labels on stuff.

Because, clearly, Vader would have named his own ship 'Tears of Younglings' or 'High Ground'.

this is so dumb. the name "Slave" refers to the slave circuitry in the ships navigation system which allowed the captain to summon the ship on command from virtually anywhere. this was outlined in the now non cannon/legend books in the Heir to the Empire series. And also in the Shadows of the Empire video game. It had nothing to do with slavery or anyone being a slave at one point. oh well, what can ya do? You'll always be Slave 1 to me.

No one has said anything about de-canonizing the name of the ship or banning people from saying it. They just dropped it from branding on a children's toy. A little weird but I get it.
