I strongly dislike this set, and the source material as well.  I get that LEGO is limited to the original IP, and I think we can all agree that Indy 4 was the sequel nobody wanted.  It did combine all of the elements of most quasi-reboots in an utterly forgettable manner, and made me cling tighter to my original trilogy DVD box set.

(Even though Temple of Doom was pretty bad as well.)

    You complete me. :o)

I bought every Indiana Jones set, some in multiples, but completely skipped this one and the Temple of Doom.

I wonder if they’re going to continue this licensing when Indy 4 is released.

Back in the early 2000’s, it seems that LEGO completely abandoned their philosophy with the wonderful LotR and Indiana themes.  Of course, that decision to pursue these was just the most awesome thing ever.  My Precious...

    Indy 5?

Maybe they'll do some Indy Legacy sets.  But no Nazis, Russians or anything that could be construed as militaryish...

    Duck, I say.

We could conceivably get LotR back with the Amazon Prime show. Sounded like it didn't sell as well as they hoped last time though. That may have been the late game split of Hobbit from 2-3 films but could still make them shy away from doing it again. Perhaps in their more recent trend of appealing to older audiences they will go for it

If the last wave of LotR didn't sell too well, it's probably because they opted to make a big Corsair ship instead of something people actually wanted... I really hope for a return of both Indy and LotR, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

    ^  It's a castle pirate ship!

(I agree - it was a very weird choice.)

The weirder choice was pretty much nothing from Return of the King :(

This is true.  No Minas Tirith, etc.

We were stuck with the ship and the Black Gate.  (Shelob is a Two Towers story, despite some movie shifting.)

I was sure there would be a tower of some sort to meet Orthanc, but whatever.

^ it's also not ironic that Mouth of Sauron appears as a minifig, but it's in the theatrical cut of the film.

While the Black Gate was a good Return of the King choice, giving us an intricate new mould for the Mouth of Sauron over the Witch King was another bizarre choice... The three smaller 2013 sets (Wizard Battle, Council of Elrond and the Black Gate) were all good picks for sets, but the largest should have been something Gondor related. Minas Tirith would have been good for a double set, like Helm's Deep + Wall or Jabba's Palace + Rancor. Gates and wall in one set and the city itself in another. Oh well... If they ever do return to LotR with one big, adult pleasing 800$ set in the future it will probably be Minas Tirith. So we can dream...

Or “Bag Hard with a Vengeance”, or “Live Free or Bag Hard”, or maybe even “A Good Day to Bag Hard”...

(I’ll refrain from posting my long-standing complaints about the missing Balrog, and no Fell-beast / Nazgul with the Witch King of Angmar 🙂)

Here's hoping there are no more IAJ or LOTR sets... I have all the figs for both themes and don't want to be pressured into chasing more!

LotR was one of the major factors that brought me back big time into the collecting fold... so I always am holding out hope for a return of the theme. I agree 100% that it was poor decision making on what sets to release that doomed the theme more than the material itself. Plus, far too much focus on The Hobbit sets instead of on the LotR sets was also a factor, since most people were pretty disappointed with those movies (and rightfully so).

I sadly think we’re done in Middle Earth but I’m holding out hope, even if just through IDEAS...

If we could get a large D2C LotR set (like Barracuda Bay) I would be satisfied..

Outside of the Corsair, I’m not sure Barracuda Bay would fit with my LotR stuff...

Can I just say how much I love that a thread titled “Random set of the day: Jungle Cutter” can morph into a long discussion of Lego’s Lord of the Rings mis-steps peppered with a nice mix of Die Hard jokes...

I don't know how it didn't sell well, the sets were impressive at the time, and the Lotr minifigs are possibly the bests of all. or maybe it was too early, when it was still weird to be an adult collector.

    Right.  It's not weird now.
